Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

This is a topic for discussing Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Spoilers for XIII and XIII-2 if you haven't played said games:

Due to come out on PS3 and 360, Lightning Returns is the final game of the XIII trilogy, set to conclude Lightning's quest. After the events of XIII-2, Lightning has awakened from her centuries of sleep within crystal stasis in the infected world of Nova Crysalia, a timeless world doomed to end due to a mysterious substance of Chaos causing the world to decay. Lightning is tasked by the god-like deity, Bhunivelze, to become the savior and save the grief-ridden souls of humanity and direct them to a new world before the world ends, also being promised the revival of her deceased sister Serah. Although Lightning begrudges the deity for using Serah as a bargaining chip, Lightning takes up the role, having thirteen days to save humanity.

In Lightning Returns is a whole new setting, story, and gameplay. Nova Crysalia is very different from Gran Pulse, the previous setting for the XIII games. In Lightning Returns, the player only controls Lightning but introduces a brand new battle system. The action-RPG battle system, named the Style-Change Active Time Battle system, could be considered a mixture of the Paradigm system found in the previous games and Final Fantasy X-2's Dressphere system. Lightning has access to several different and customizable outfits each with their own set of abilities and commands. Each outfit has its own ATB gauge and is consumable, requiring Lightning to switch outfits to let it replenish. Battles are more interactable because of this, enabling Lightning to be moved around the battlefield in a limited matter. However, as health is no longer replenished after a battle unlike the previous two XIII games, guarding and evading becomes a necessity as well as items.

Although Lightning is only playable character, the rest of XIII and XIII-2's casts are slated to return. Hope acts as Lightning's guide through the infected world while the rest of the cast is scattered, some of which Lightning has to fight due to the fact that the Chaos has made them more grief-ridden. Lumina, who bears a strange similar appearance to Serah, also appears several times throughout Lightning's quest, viewing her and the world as a plaything and helping or intervening constantly with Lightning's tasks just for enjoyment. The world is also split upon hearing Lightning's return, some worshipping Lightning while others believe Lightning is trying to spirit them to their deaths.

Combining Majora's Mask elements with a new RPG-action battle system never seen in the series before, Lightning Returns hopes to make the XIII trilogy go out with a bang, arriving in the US on February 11th.

Thoughts and discuss.

Not really a big deal. Just a reference. :P Though I have a problem with outfits that sexualize Lightning. I blame Toriyama.

Yeah. But as if it wasn't already blatantly obvious that Lightning is female Cloud expy, they add this. And it irks me. But then again Lightning irks me as a whole so... eh.

Lightning is more like Squall to me, I don't get those comparisons other then the fact they were soldiers. Only in this case... Lightning's more likable when they're both in their early "cold and distant" phase.

So tell me... Is this demo worth downloading if I strongly disliked FFXIII?

... ugh. The things I start. The Bravely Default should be cut out though, not really related to this at all. Oh well, we can keep it but I was kind of hesitant to make a topic because I feared everyone would just turn it into a "grumble grumble three XIII games" as I feel like I'm the only person on the forum who has really enjoyed the first two games (Not my favorite in the series but I would give them both 4/5s).

But hmm... hard to say. It depends what exactly you hated. The story kind of spoils XIII-2 right off the bat for you but it's easy to follow actually if you're not really super invested in it. But it depends what. Although the demo puts you only in a dungeon, it is much more open world then XIII for example. The combat puts you in control of Lightning only but it is rather fun.

Hell, the only thing from XIII is really just Lightning and the cast themselves, seeing the game's several centuries later from the said game. Completely different setting, story, and all...

Implying the initial split is discussing the game.

I expressed an opinion I had about the character when asked. This is hardly "make it into its own topic" worthy. It's idle chit chat among friends.

And since there's no way to split posts up all I can really do is just blank the BD stuff. Mrgrgrr.

But I guess it's good to have a topic for it. If you have anything in mind for the intro post, Fen, let me know and I'll edit it in for you.

How exactly is posting your opinion about a character not worthy of a topic? I see it all the time in other forums. I know you were specifically asked but asking what people's opinions of a character is topic worthy. If I had an opinion about Solid Snake, I'd make a topic about it and ask other's opinions on it! How do you expect a forum to survive if you don't create stuff to talk about?

As for the demo, I will give it a try. I wasn't a fan of XIII but I really didn't hate it. Plus I heard XIII-2 fixed a lot of things so I'm pretty clean slate on this, not letting prior games effect my opinion. Although I'm not really excited for it like I am other RPGs but hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.
Ok so I downloaded the demo and tried it. I like it but not as much as I should.... I feel like the demo doesn't do the game justice, I might give it a rent. I like the battle system but that was always the one thing I liked about XIII. The battle system was the best part, imo, it was just other things that let me down. So far from the demo impressions I'd have to say it's decent although the snippet of story was HIGHLY HIGHLY cliched....

I wouldn't really call it 'highly highly cliched' but the story is simplified compared to the previous games. xP My problem with the first two games is that the story was confusing at times anyway so I'm fine with it, as I'm not really super invested in XIII's story anyway, although I do like the cast. With the world ending in thirteen days, Lightning is tasked as the Savior to save the souls of humanity and take them to the new world before the current world ends, being promised that she can save Serah too.

I do agree though that I wish the demo was longer and maybe have Lightning in a different area instead of a dungeon, showing off the open world more. I really loved the battle system though.

I preordered this a few months back. I actually played the demo today and it was fairly solid. I wish you could do more to evade than slowly trudge backwards. But it does make the gameplay a bit more interactive, a rare first for FF.
-Sig under construction because the next thing I use will be hilarious-

You can actually, at least from what I seen in trailers later in the game. I didn't bother with evade too much and mostly guarded in the demo so I'm not completely sure. But I thought if you point the control stick you can move a different direction?

You do, but they only slowly step backwards like in the first two. Not nearly quick enough to avoid an incoming attack.

A new awesome trailer has been released, vaguely summarizing Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 in around a seven minute video, all in sixteen bit form from the SNES days. Pretty cool actually. The music is rendered to SNES style too.

Speaking of the game's soundtrack, I really hope to find a release of the game's OST. Game is a master collection of the XIII trilogy, having tons of previous music from the past and I have enjoyed what I heard from LR so far.

Game is set to come out tomorrow! (at midnight tonight if you're getting it digitally).

Don't have every Fragment but I at least managed to beat XIII-2 on my PS3 just in time. Looking forward to picking up my copy tomorrow. Shame it's on a Tuesday as I'll have classes to worry about before starting this.

Reviews seem to range from five to nine. Rather mixed. Hear the battle system is really good in all of those at least, which is usually enough to charge through any RPG. Course, not like reviews are going to affect me much. Been a while since I paid attention to any.
