The more lighthearted and Saturday morning cartoon-like Sonic gets, the more I hate it. Everything from the over simplified visuals to the corny ways the stories carry themselves really makes me cringe. If it were up to me, I'd settle for a more SA2-like tone and an Unleashed-like art style. Sorry if I'm so negative, by the way. Edited by TwiceStyle, Jan 19 2014, 06:39 PM.

I understand. It's not every day something like SatAM comes and goes, and leaves us wishing we had something more visceral. more exciting. |

You have to remember we are getting older so whilst they'll try to appeal to all fans, they can't. Plus it's the YOUNGER market they will be trying to please more so it will be less about what we liked; depth, character development, darker story lines and more about the nonsense we seem to get in games these days. |

I understand you completely, though I still like the Sonic series, this is a problem I do notice. Heck, I think SEGA should look at the really good Sonic Fanfics and Comics of this sort and take inspiration from them, or better yet, hire them for help. Maybe then they could actually get back to the less lighthearted Sonic that many of us love! Sometimes I think that after the bad reports on Sonic 2006, it scared SEGA into using less serious storylines and visuals in the future, and that's why it's been this way lately. Sonic 2006 I thought was actually good for that part. It's just that the gameplay needed work. They should've kept the edgier storyline and more serious-looking stuff, and just improved on the physics and gameplay. Heck, I bet Sonic Lost World could've have a storyline and characters like that, but still had that sort of gameplay |

Be sure to check me out on Deviant Art to see some of my various drawings and artworks. http://hexidextrous.deviantart.com/ Also, I would like to ask a favor from for anyone who is my friend here. If someday we meet in person in the near future, and I had recently done anything that would confirm that I had become a Brony (which as of now I am not one), such as if I had posted on a Pony-related fan-site, drawn a Pony-themed artwork, contributed to a Pony fanfic, or anything else along those lines. If I have done anything like that, I want you to punch me in the face without warning. This make sound like I'm joking, but I am absolutely serious about this. Ignore any future statements retracting this if I ever make any. Though if you do, please first confirm that it is me who is doing it, and not some Brony who is posing as me and wants to see me get punched. I do not wish to go down the path of the Bronies, and hopefully those of you reading this will help me so that it stays that way, if god forbid I ever even attempt it. Thank you. | |

Sega simply had more success with the new Unleashed and on style and it's working out for both sides. More sales, better reviews, and the overall audience has been pleased with them (Well until Lost World, which is not bad but mixed). I don't mind it personally, seeing it's also what the beginning of Sonic really was tbh. |

We had a serious storyline and realistic looking graphics once. It was called Sonic '06. It was a mess on all fronts. That said, it's funny you should bring up Unleashed as a style point since the series has practically remained the same stylistically from that point onward. The only thing that's changed is the level designs. They've shifted away from real-world locations and gone back to fantastical worlds like there were back in the original games. This often leads to stage design that's more fun to play around with, which is fine by me. Besides which, Lost World seemed to try its hand at edgier moments and it was just plain awful. Compared to Colours which stuck to light hearted all the way through or Unleashed which was relatively story driven, the tone jumping was really jarring. I'll level with you: I loved SA2's story too. It was a good story at the time and being able to experience it from both sides was neat. But in all honesty I don't think Sonic is all that suited to deep tales of intrigue and drama. I think they pretty much reached the top of what they can do with Unleashed. At the end of the day it's a series about a speedy hedgehog that foils the plan of an egg-shaped mad scientist who's out for world domination. It doesn't have to be dark or complex so long as its fun. There's plenty of other media you can turn to for those particular fixes. |

Well Megaman used to be really light in tone, but got really dark and edgy once it went into the Megaman X/Megaman Zero series, and yet Megaman was still good. And just because it has anthropomorphic animal characters doesn't mean it can't be serious in tone. Star Fox is a perfect example of this. Sonic can be like that too. Stories in the sonic games have been rather bland lately. Actually, you guys should probably go see the little serie know has "Sonic Dissected", by this guy on dA that makes a lot of sonic parodies. He makes some good points about the show's story and how the gameplay affects the games, bla bla bla. In terms of story. I'll admit, Sonic Adventure 2 is probably the darkest Sonic yet. I mean Dr. Eggman carries a gun around. Sure, you had shadow with a story that tried to be dramatic but just came out weak, sonic Unleash with the world being broken apart... and no one really cared, except when they were possessed. Really, Sonic Unleash has no twists. None of them. After the first sequence, there's not a whole lot besides exposition by that one doctor guy. And Colors. Well, colors, there's not really a lot of plot but a few jokes and all. I'm kind of just saying stuff other people said, so if you have the time go check out that show, there's a lot about the show story and stuff. Sonic Dissecting - Part 1 Anyway, in terms of the future. I honestly don't know. I mean I didn't even like the story in Lost worlds that much, to be fair, tails being has sarcastic has Sonic... meh, having all 3 characters doing what feels the same kind of pulls them down a bit, and the part where Tails gets jealous is just dumb. So yeah, I would like another SA2 like story. Something darker, about the sonic characters and not the monster or "thing" of the week. |

I'm not going to lie I honestly don't mind Sonic being a bit cartoony. The games are targeted towards kids after all, and have always been this way. Though maybe with Sonic Boom coexisting alongside Modern Sonic, perhaps Modern Sonic will become the more serious part of the franchise with Sonic Boom being lighthearted. (Sort of like the Mega Man and Mega Man X comparison in those few posts above mine.) I think then we'd all be happy. |

Few points to make here: First of all, Mega Man Classic and X are set in two different eras. For all intents and purposes you can treat them as separate universes as far as characters are concerned. Classic was a simple game where a mad scientist sets a bunch of robots out to cause mayhem, and a good scientist sends out his robot to go and stop them. There's not a whole lot to it beyond that. It's simple. It's fun. Much like Sonic was back in the day. X took on a darker tone, yes, but it was still mostly the same deal. Main antagonist, batch of bad robots to defeat along the way, X sets out to defeat them. As the series progressed it expanded on that and the plots got gradually more complex, but the tone never shifts drastically. It's a consistently darker tone that stays with the series all the way through. And it's in a setting that works well with said tone. It would be fine if they established Sonic to be a serious or dark game to begin with, but they didn't. He's a brightly coloured cartoon hedgehog. He doesn't really mesh well with that sort of tone at the best of times. He makes witty quips as he foils an egg-shaped man's plans. Plans that are all very cartoon-y in essence to begin with (the Sonic Adventure games are probably the only ones somewhat grounded in reality). We've seen Sonic in both styles at one point or another. And it just looks like he's better suited to simple stuff regardless of personal likes to dislikes. This so much. It was melodramatic moments like this that killed the game for me. They've been partners for how long now? This shouldn't even be an issue. Lost World was a mess in pretty much every regard. The Deadly Six are about the only good and consistent thing in there. Implying SA2 didn't have a "Monster of the Week". Biolizard is that game's "MotW". The only game that hasn't really had one in recent memory would be Colours. You start out fighting Eggman and you fight him all the way through to the end with no surprises. |

I object to your claims

Anyway, I think darker stories can work for the series, but within reason. Something like SA2 I'm fine with. The pretenous bullshit of Shadow the Hedgehog on the other hand, is not something I want to see in the series ever again. Of course, that game also had shitty writing on top of that, but you get my drift. |

Eh, I liked Sonic Lost World, up until the ending, for all the parts on Lava Mountain. The ending was just so disappointing, and could've been way better. Heck, I could've thought up a better ending to Lost World than that. Oh, and the Yoshi Land DLC, which also was terrible in my opinion. The rest I was okay with though. |
