Prologue: A Light Snuffed

It was a small alcove, comprised of solid limestone. Sediments forming bands of peach, tan, and white in the walls, from which a small amount of dust permeated, the cavern was but a simple area.

The furnishings were sparse. Yet this gave way for a warm and homely feel. A small book shelf sat in the corner, only the middle of three shelves having any novels at all. Besides that, someone sitting on it at the moment, was a small wooden chair and desk.

By candlelight, a Yoshi furiously scratched at a piece of parchment with quill and ink. Mumbling the words along, they practically flowed onto the paper, underneath the flickering light.

To whomever finds this,

I don’t know how it happened, or how anything could have gone wrong. Everything up ‘till then seemed to have gone so flawlessly. I for one didn’t think it could have all gone downhill so fast – and so tragically.

I don’t know how I can explain this without giving away too much detail. For I feel that he is still out there. He who caused this horribly cataclysm. He who I believe is still out there, hunting me, the one survivor, down.

Even here, I know that I am not safe. As I sit here, writing this, he could be standing right outside my door. This place is well-hidden, true, but one should never understate the malicious resourcefulness of… him.

The Yoshi dipped his pen into the ink and resumed writing.

And for that, I implore anyone who reads this – be on your guard. He’ll be out there, waiting for his chance to strike again.

But, in our research, my team and I may have found some way to bring him down to the deepest, darkest realms of the Underwhere where he belongs. It is not safe for me to explain in detail here in this letter, however, so I have hidden hints in several areas throughout

Footsteps.

The Yoshi immediately stopped writing, pen dropping from hand, the ink now flowing freely onto the paper.

“It’s him. He’s here. He’s come for me.”

The Yoshi briefly looked for a way to escape, before remembering the only exit was the door. It was futile – the only think now to do was accept the fate that had been so tragically handed.

The Yoshi stood up from the desk so fast the chair fell to the dirt floor with a loud clatter. Taking a deep breath, the Yoshi turned and slowly walked to the door. Heartbeat quickening, he heard someone began to pound at the door.

“I promise,” the Yoshi shouted. “That if I must die today, I will not do so without a fight!”

The door was kicked open. The Yoshi caught only a brief glimpse of the sinister being that had arrived, before it attacked. The candlelight flickered for a brief moment before it had its light snuffled out. And then…

Total darkness.

Complete silence.

Forever.

AN: Well, here it is; my Yoshi's Island fanfiction.

Yeah, you don't really see fanfics based on this game. But the thing is, Yoshi's Island ranks as my number one favorite video game of all time. Seriously. The gameplay is fantastic, the level design I find to be really well-done, the music is amazing (the Underground theme ranks as one of my favorite video game tracks of all time) and the entire game was just something I found to have been made with plenty of care and passion - the way I like to see video games (or anything really) made. Sure there wasn't really a plot beyond 'Reunite Baby Mario and Baby Luigi' but that didn't matter because the rest of the game was so damn good.

So, Transcend. I first came up with the idea to write a fic mid-2013. See, I had been long disheartened with the fact that Nintendo never released Yoshi's Island for the Wii's Virtual Console - And I had gotten a 3DS too late to take advantage of the Ambassador program and thus get the game (and several others) on the system for free. The only way I had to play it was via the original SNES version... which was at my parents' house in another town.

One day however, while at a shop that sells used games from past generations, I came across something I never expected I would see - a copy of the GBA version of Yoshi's Island. I didn't hesitate to buy it and was pleased to find out that it still worked very well. From there I was reminded of just how much I loved this game. That, coupled with the announcement of the new game for the 3DS is what led to the inspiration for this fic.

So yeah. I started writing and now I'm ready to post this story for others to enjoy. =3

So Transcend is supposed to be a prequel to the original Yoshi's Island, set many years back in the past. The prologue here leaves a lot of questions, setting the mood for the rest of the story.

Although, Super Paper Mario, couldn't you have had a better name for your version of Hell? V_V Maybe I'll change that... You're probably going to see a lot of shout-outs to other Mario games - I know one of the next chapters will have a shout out to Super Mario Bros 2 (the USA one by the way).

I guess that's it. Hope you all enjoy this.

Chapter 1: The Right Thing

“Come on man, do it! Give it a go!”

“I don’t know…”

“Don’t tell me you’re scared or anything!”

“Of course not! I just don’t think it’s a good idea!”

“Ah, come on bud! It’ll be fun! Don’t you want to have fun?”

“Yes, but-“

“Then you should do it!”

Summer had arrived on Yoshi’s Island, painting a picturesque view for all to see. The panoramic horizon was filled with lush green jungles, sparkling blue sea water, dazzling purple mountains…

And two Yoshi kids arguing.

The pair, one green, one yellow, had been going at this for the past several minutes. And were no closer to a solution then when they had first started.

“Aster, if you’re worried that you’re gonna get in trouble, don’t! No one, and I mean no one, is going to find out!”

The green Yoshi, Aster, heaved a frustrated sigh. “I’m sorry Hal. It sounds like fun, but I’ve been told to never go to the Dire Swamp. My parents say it’s too dangerous.”

Hal scoffed. “Dangerous? That’s what makes it cool!”

Aster looked rather unsure. “I just don’t know, Hal…”

The yellow Yoshi let out a sigh, much like his friend had done before. “Aster, we’re not little kids anymore!”

“Actually, we still are…” Aster began, only to be interrupted by Hal’s ranting.

“Therefore, I don’t see the problem. So come on Aster! Let’s go to the Dire Swamp and have an awesome adventure!”

The green Yoshi shook his head. “Sorry Hal, but I don’t want to risk getting in trouble.”

A melancholy expression materialized on Hal’s face. “Fine then. Have it your way. You don’t want to have a fun adventure, fine. I, however, do.”

Aster’s dark blue eyes widened as the implication of Hal’s words hit him like a bat to a baseball. And before that metaphorical home run went out of the park, the green Yoshi reached over and grabbed Hal by the shoulders as he was turning around. Aster roughly pulled his friend back, immediately berating him.

“You are not going to the swamp, Hal!”

The yellow Yoshi raised a curious eyebrow. “Are you going to try and stop me, bud?”

Aster nodded. “I might.”

Hal looked at his friend out of the corner of light green eyes, as if weighing his options. “Well then…”

Before Aster could react, Hal broke away from him and went straight into a run. “You’ll have to catch me first!”

As the young yellow Yoshi ran, Aster could only at first stare in disbelief. A quick shake of his head brought his bearings back to him and Aster found himself shouting to his wayward companion.

“Hal? Hal! Get back here!”

There wasn’t a reply, save for the sound of increasingly fading laughter. As he watched Hal get further away, Aster was torn between what he should do.

“I should go after him! He could really get himself hurt out there! But,” here he looked back, away from where his friend had gone.

“My parents have always told me to never leave the surrounding forest. It’s too dangerous they say.”

Aster took a step back. “Maybe I should go and get help. Then again…”

The young Yoshi turned his attention back in the direction Hal had gone. He could still see his friend, but just barely – he was but a yellow speck in a sea of green. And as he watched the distance between him and Hal increase with every second that passed, Aster felt as if he was standing between a rock and a very hot place. “Then again, if I go back, something bad might happen to Hal while I’m gone… and it might be too late to help him…

“And then, if he is brought back safe and sound, he’s still going to get in trouble with the adults. But is I go after him myself, and convince him not to go through this crazy idea of his, maybe the adults won’t find out and no one will get in trouble!”

A grin appeared on Aster’s face, formed from the satisfaction of what he thought was a good plan of action. Fully believing what he was about to do was the right thing, the Yoshi broke into a run.
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Many a Yoshi parent would tell a tale to their children, before tucking them in so they could sleep ‘till the morn. But not only these tales were filled with awe and wonderment and ended on a happy note. No, some were meant to instill fear – stories of young Yoshis driven by a lush for adventure, who took one wrong turn too many and ended up being devoured alive by a Piranha Plant. Of getting crushed by a Chomp. Of a Lunge Fish snatching a swimming Yoshi up and sending it to a watery grave.

It was for their safety, these stories, to dissuade young Yoshis from setting foot into the more dangerous areas of the island. And as Aster ran to try and catch up to his friend, the tales he had been told began to flood his mind. He was having second thoughts about his decision, wondering whether or not it would be a good idea to go back and get help from an able-bodied adult.

The Yoshi shook his green head. “No, I don’t want us getting into trouble. I can handle it myself.”

As he closed the distance between him and Hal, Aster called out to the fellow Yoshi. “Hal! Hal, get back here!”

As he had done before, Hal didn’t answer him, for the distance between the two was still too far. Aster let out a sigh and hung his head, only for it to pop back up with a wave of worry.

For he had seen what lay not far from where Hal currently was.

The grass had gotten taller and had taken on a slightly darker shade of green. Wisps of fog slowly coursed across the horizon and Aster noticed a couple trees as well. And with their trunks a dull gray-brown and the leaves a sickly green, hanging limply from wilted and half-rotted branches, the place gave off an air of dread and foreboding.

“Oh no… Hal!”

At last, the yellow Yoshi halted his run. He turned around and acknowledged Aster with an arched eyebrow.

“I thought you weren’t going to come.”

When Aster finally caught up to Hal, he was almost completely out of breath. “I followed you… so I could stop you…”

“Stop me?”

“Yes.” He continued at Hal’s look of confusion. “Hal, it’s too dangerous. Do you even know what is in that swamp? At Hal’s silence, Aster shook his head. “Piranha Plants, Grinders, I’ve heard there are Lunge Fish as well!”

Hal shot a smirk his way. “Don’t worry about me, Aster. I’ll be perfectly fine. This is going to be the most awesome-est adventures ever!”

With that, the yellow Yoshi began to scale a large tree. As most of the branches seemed to be rotting, Aster grew increasingly worried that one of them would break, sending his wayward companion plunging into the swamp.

After a while though, he couldn’t stand it – he had to do something. And the only thing he could think of was to climb after him.

“I hope I know what I’m doing.” Aster thought to himself, approaching the tree.

He looked up. While it had already seemed like a daunting climb from first glance, now the tree looked positively impossible to scale without ending up falling into the swamp. But, from Aster’s point of view, there was no other choice.

“Hang on Hal!” Aster reached for the lowest branch and brought it down. The young green Yoshi stepped up on it and went on to start scaling the rest of the tree.

Hal looked down, a smirk crossing his face. “I knew you couldn’t resist the thrill of adventure, Aster!”

The green Yoshi took a deep breath as he pulled himself onto another branch. “Hal…”

It was then that Aster heard it.

It started out faint at first, the soft sound of wood snapping and cracking. Aster gasped and recoiled back in sheer worry, one thought and one thought alone crossing his mind.

“No… no! Not this!”

Aster climbed another branch. “Hal! Get down from there now! Hurry!”

The crackling grew louder, but if Hal had noticed, he didn’t seem worried. “Will you relax? Everything is going to be…”

CRACK!

Time seemed to slow down for both of the young Yoshis. Hal saw the murky water growing ever closer as he let out a terrified scream. Aster watched in horror as his friend fell, his tiny hand reaching out…
