When she had signed up for this tournament, Blaire had expected to fight in great arenas. Battlefields that would test her mettle and abilities, stadiums that would make her think on her feet and truly challenge her. And of course, they had to be competently designed. So far, every arena she had fought in had succeeded in doing that. Well, except for the last place she had fought in.

However, at least that ‘battlefield’ was actually complete.

Standing in the shadows of a large gatehouse, the young husky beheld a fortress that was a relic of an era long gone, frozen in time in the midst of its construction. A moat that should have been flowing with water laid bone dry. The stone walls of the gatehouse were surrounded by scaffolding and there were tools of all kinds, ranging from hammers and nails, to chisels and files, lying haphazardly on the framework. Buckets of wet mortar besides bricks were also around, inviting those with a less graceful equilibrium to trip all over them.

Blaire slapped a palm to the side of her head, rolling her eyes. “Are you kidding me? They couldn’t finish this before the tournament started? Really?”

She let out a sigh and brushed a tuff of fur from her eyes. “Well, there’s not much I can do about it now. I only hope this castle has enough of its framework done and it won’t fall on us during the fight. Because…” she slowly raised her head to look up at the massive fortress.

“I really don’t want to get crushed…”

The canine glanced around the area, wondering where her opponent was – they should have been here by now. Thinking back, she recalled that her opponent this time would once again be someone she had faced in a prior match, one Ralean Sivth as she recalled. However, with said opponent not even in the arena right now, the match was put on hold until she could get here.

If she even got here at all.

Blaire crossed her arms over her chest. “What on Mobius could have happened?” If she had a watch, the husky would have been checking it right about now. Her ear twitched as she heard a voice bellow out all throughout the stadium;

“Attention combatants! There will be a slight change in the match-up for this fight.”

The canine tilted her head to the side, her hands on her hips. “By ‘change’ what are they talking about?”

“Ralean Sivth will not be participating in this match,” the voice boomed out over the arena, to which Blaire arched an eye brow at this new piece of information. “Instead, Blaire Field’s new opponent shall be APT-001C Gespenst Type-AI, also known as ‘Wraith’."

“Wraith, eh? Well,” she began with a smug grin, crossing her arms over her chest. “This oughta be very interesting.”

As if on cue, the crowd that had gathered around the edge of the arena parted to reveal the humanoid mech standing by the edge of the ramp. The APT-001C Gespenst Type-AI, or as it was more commonly refered to, the 'Wraith'. It hadn't been there very long. Only a few minutes, in fact. The call to arms came rather suddenly and unexpectedly in the form of a cancelation. Raelean had dropped out.

"I didn't think I had beat her that badly," Marcus thought to himself as he marched up the ramp, mechanical whirring and clanking accompanying each step. "Still... I suppose that last payload was a bit much for an average person to take. I don't blame her."

The black and purple mech came to a halt behind its opponent: one Blaire Fields. Sure enough she was a Mobian... at least as far as Marcus' understanding of the term knew. She didn't look like much, but then again neither did the last Mobian he fought. Perhaps super natural abilities were par for the course in their race. Needless to say he wouldn't make the mistake of underestimating one again.

The designated area for the battle did not look quite up to par compared to the others Wraith had fought in so far. It felt smaller... less designed for battle than the rest. Needless to say, it wasn't. The half finished restoration work on the gatehouse was all that he needed to see to tell that was the case. Given the mech's increased weight compared to other competitors this could be potentially problematic. The scafolding wouldn't likely sustain it and too great an impact from any landings it made could cause damage to the weakened bridge and gatehouse. It was looking like this would be a battle fought close to the ground for the most part.

"So, you're Blaire Fields, then?" Marcus spoke up, the metallic echo that always accompanied his voice ringing out clearly. "My name isn't all that important. But you're free to call me Wraith. Everyone else does."

The machine moves into a ready stance in anticipation of an opening move much like it does in any battle situation, what little light that lingers shining off its metal plating slightly. There wasn't much room to move on the bridge and until he had an idea of how Blaire was going to move he couldn't form an effective strategy. But he had gained a little insight into a few things that worked over the last two matches. Momentum was on his side, there was no point in stopping now.

"Ladies first." he adds, offering the opening move to his opponent.

As she waited for her opponent to arrive, Blaire let out a deep sigh. Her patience was growing thin – whoever her opponent was really should get here. For she had come here for a battle and by golly, wanted to get a battle! She rolled her eyes and brushed a tuff of head fur out of her eyes. “Come on… I want to get on with this…”

All at once, there was the sound of metallic clanking from behind her. And then, a voice with a metallic echo;

So, you’re Blaire Fields, then?

The violet-furred husky turned around to look at who she presumed was her opponent. The canine did a double-take when she at last beheld him, a short gasp escaping her. Wraith wasn’t a very large machine, but with his imposing black coloring, and what to her looked like compartments that most likely housed missiles or other choice weapons, Blaire knew size wouldn’t matter in this match.

Her eyes drooped behind her head. “Oh dear…” Quickly, she tried to compose herself, clearing her throat.

“Yes, that’s me,” she said, folding her arms, a smirk crossing her lavender muzzle. “And I’m sure I would be right in assuming you’re my opponent for this match.”

My name isn’t all that important. But you’re free to call me Wraith. Everyone else does.

Not taking her eyes off her foe, Blaire turned on her Cryokinetic Bangle. Once the gauge had started climbing, the dog swiftly pulled out her saber. There was a sly smirk on her face as the dog regarded her opponent, slowly turning the blade from side to side.

Ladies first.

“Hmm, most of the robots I encounter aren’t so polite. Nice to have a chance of pace for once. Now then…”

Blaire backed off a few steps, wondering how she was going to start this off. While her sword could cut through SWATbots pretty easily, Wraith looked to be made of tougher material. The choice now came down to risking a full-on attack, or finding another way to try and damage her metallic opponent.

In this situation,” the husky considered, “The smart thing for me to do would be to…

Throwing a snappy salute at her foe, the husky dashed off to the side. The canine’s plan was to find some way of distracting Wraith so she could test if her sword would be any help at all. And as her eyes fell upon a few pails of wet mortar, a sly grin crossed her muzzle.

This should prove to be very amusing.

Wraith watches as the Mobian husky runs off, flashing a salute as she did. He couldn't help but let out a single chuckle.

"She's got spunk, I'll give her that. Now what's she planning?"

The mech's visor scans the battlefield for hints as to what its opponent may be up to. Based on the direction she's heading in she'll end up by the gatehouse if she keeps going until there's no bridge left.

Scaffolding could potentially lend her an advantage if that's what she's thinking, not to mention the multitude of discarded tools laying about. They'd make for handy temporary weapons. But based on the current data there was no way to know for sure what her exact move was. Looks like it was time to try his luck.

"As they say, 'Fortune favours the bold'."

Wraith's movement systems roar into action, propelling the mech a little off the bridge as it hovers. If nothing else this would minimise stress to the weakened structure. Leaning forward, the thrusters propel it towards its intended target: Blaire Fields.

When it was within range, about a metre or so, the mech would draw back a metallic fist and swing it towards Blaire forcefully. The impact of the fist combined with the inertia should be enough to knock her back a few metres and possibly wind her if it connects right. Depending on her stamina it could outright knock her out too.

But that all hinges on the attack connecting at all. Marcus doubts that she would have gotten this far if she could be downed so easily.

Blaire sprinted over to a set of scaffolding where she had seen the pails of mortar. She wasted no time grabbing the framework and climbing along it, trying to reach the top as fast as she could. The husky hoped that the incomplete state of the castle wouldn’t compromise her situation – the last thing she need to happen was for the scaffolding to break, sending her back down to the ground and snapping her spine in half.

When she was nearly to the top, Blaire looked over her shoulder to see where her opponent was. She saw that Wraith had taken the more direct approach for his first move – he was heading towards her at a rather fast pace.

Better get this quickly,” the dog realized, pulling herself up to the platform where her target item rested. Trying to keep her balance, she carefully made her way over there, stepping over a pile of bricks in the process.

As soon as she grabbed the handle of the bucket and pulled it up, Blaire leapt down. Before she hit the ground, however, the Mobian thrust the blade of her sword into the castle wall to catch herself.

“Now then… yikes!”

The reason for Blaire’s shock was clear to those that were watching this match – Wraith had nearly approached her and was sending a metal fist her way.

The dog acted quickly – she swung the bucket at the robot, sending its contents towards him and hoping to hit what constituted as his eyes. Hoping that distracted him, the violet Mobian swung her body around her saber, just barely avoiding getting hit by the fist. She breathed a sigh of relief when she returned to her original position.

Whew. That was a close one.

Wraith's course did not deviate despite the husky taking to the scaffolding. She wasn't all that high up yet so a small leap to connect the attack wasn't out of the question. However, it wasn't necessary as Blaire made her way back to ground level carrying something. The mech was so focused on making its fist connect that it wasn't taken into consideration at all. Something that proved to be an error.

Before the mech could react, it saw the contents from a bucket of wet mortar come flying towards it: or more accurately, its visor. With a splatter its vision was blotted out. A crude tactic, but an effective one all the same. With no way of re-adjusting its aim accurately it simply continues as it is. The metal fist slams hard into the wall of the gatehouse. Dust flies out around it as several fractures form in the stone surface, small bits of debris falling down by its 'feet'.

"Mrgh... definitely need to get the boys in R&D to give me some sort of alternative vision for situations like this. Or visor wipers at the very least."

Wraith takes a step back from the wall as it withdraws its fist. It raises its right hand and brings it to its visor to begin removing the wet mortar, standing in a defensive position with its left fist clenched before it. It was vulnerable for a short moment as a result of the action, but not completely helpless.

Just when Blaire thought she was safe, she found herself being pelted by dust and several small pieces of bricks. Some of the dust got in her eyes, rendering her nearly as blind as her trick had Wraith. With a yelp of surprise upon the contact, the husky found herself rubbing at her eyes to clear them, still hanging onto her sword while it was still stuck in the wall.

However, that wouldn’t be lasting too much longer.

Darn it, darn it! This trick was not supposed to happen to me! I need to clear my vision before Wraith does his or I’ll be in huge trouble!

As Blaire rubbed her eyes, she found herself slowly inching ever further down. The blade of her saber was getting looser the more she moved around and it would be only a matter of time before it slipped out of the wall and she fell back to the ground.

She had realized the issue much too late, however.

“Oh. Shoot.”

Thud!

As she laid there, sprawled on the ground, looking up at the sky through dust-ridden eyes, Blaire let out a sigh. “Fantastic…”

Pushing away a hammer in the process, the husky rolled to her hands and knees. She pressed a hand against her throbbing head. “Ugh, this isn’t looking like my day at all.”

It was at this time that Wraith had removed the last of the wet mortar from its visor, shaking its hand and allowing the remainder to fall onto the bridge's stone surface. Small signs of the attack remained around the visor where some stray blobs of mortar had landed, but they were irrelevant at the present time. With the visor clean the mech could once again see.

It appeared that the impact of the fist had done more damage than initially intended, the area partially obscured by the dust floating around. The cracks in the wall along with a few missing chunks were clearly the result of the attack. The gatehouse seemed to be in as much a state of disrepair as initially surmised. At the very least it seemed the scaffolding was holding up. For now.

It didn't take too long to spot the husky hunched over on the ground as she held a hand to her head. Marcus couldn't tell if the attack had landed or not due to the blindness her surprise attack had caused, but for whatever reason she was disoriented. It would be unwise to let such an opportunity go to waste.

"Pretty careless of you, pup. Figured someone who made it this far through this competition would have their wits a little more about them," Marcus taunts as the mech takes a few steps towards its downed opponent, halting in front of her.

"There's no mercy in war, you know? The enemy won't just stop because you're having a bad day. But lucky for you, this ain't war. I'd rather not have to maim anyone more than I have to in this tournament... I've offered this courtesy to everyone else, just like I'm about to offer to you: If you forfeit now, you can walk out a hell of a lot less bandaged up then you'll need to if you push on through to its inevitable conclusion."

With the offer placed on the table Wraith simply stands in an idle position waiting for a response from the Mobian. No attacks would be made until an answer was given, through words or otherwise.

"Besides, I'm not one to hit a man while they're down. The ball is in your court now, pup."

It didn’t take terribly long for Blaire to clear her eyes of the dust – for the most part. The husky found herself still constantly blinking and rubbing to get the rest of it out. As she tried to clear her eyes, her ear twitched with the voice of her opponent.

Pretty careless of you, pup. Figured someone who made it this far through this completion would have their wits a little more about them.

The husky raised her head to see that Wraith was now in front of her. The Mobian shot a glare at her opponent.

There’s no mercy in way, you know? The enemy won’t just stop because you’re having a bad day. But lucky for you, this ain’t war. Blaire’s eyes narrowed.

Besides, I’m not one to hit a man while they’re down. The ball is in your court now, pup.

The dog hung her head and for a few moments said nothing. However, a dark chuckle suddenly escaped her throat as a toothy smirk appeared on her lavender muzzle. She slowly stood up, grabbing her saber in the process. “I may be down,” she said at last, raising her head and showing off a determined glint in her eyes.

She slowly raised her blade until it was pointing right at the robot. “But I am far from out!”

"Heh. Good answer. I admire your resolve," Marcus replies as the mech shifts back into a fighting stance. "But I think you'll find you regret it!"

Once again Wraith draws back its right fist and swings it towards the husky while taking a step forward, aiming to knock her flat against the wall. With any luck it would shake some tools down off the scaffolding and bring them crashing down on top of her. Though Marcus wasn't counting on that.

It was around this time a fog could be noticed slowly rolling in over the bridge. While noticeable, it was much lighter than the one experienced during the mech's first match. With any luck it wouldn't pose any problems in relation to tracking its opponent. This was soon accompanied by a light amount drizzle that danced and whipped around with the wind before its 'eyes'. It was definitely cold out but the robot couldn't feel it nor did it have breath to see. This change in weather shouldn't provide any problems.

Heh. Good answer. I admire your resolve. But I think you’ll find you regret it!

A sly smirk crossed Blaire’s lavender-furred muzzle at that comment. Regret? Hah! Wraith certainly seemed tough, but she had faced many a difficult opponent in her life and came out relatively fine. If she had any say, this would be no different.

The robot drew back its fist for a second punch. Acting quickly, the dog ducked down to avoid the attack. However, the move had the added effect of having some of the tools falling from the scaffolding and cascading down upon her. A chisel and several nails fell onto her, but thankfully she was able to avoid getting hit by some of the heavier items by leaping off to the side. As Blaire looked down, she noticed that one of the items that fell happened to be a hammer – an item that could prove to be very instrumental in helping her achieve victory, provided that she could get to it.

Before that could happen, however, the canine swung her sword with the speed of lightning at her foe, aiming what constituted as its left shoulderblade. This was just as a light drizzle began, slightly damping her fur and clothes.

Oh great, just what I needed,” she thought with sarcasm, as she also took notice of the fog rolling in.

As expected from the first attempt, the second also missed its mark as it went crashing into the wall again. The fractures in the structre left from the last impact only became worse as tools began to fall from the scaffolding. Quickly the mech retracts its fist and takes a step back, avoiding contact with the rain of tools.

But the Mobian was not one to rest on her laurels. Quickly whipping around towards the side she let loose a quick slash with her weapon that was aimed at its left shoulder armour. Without time to react Wraith has no choice but to take the attack. The two metallic objects grind against each other as a trail of sparks flies out from the edge of the husky's blade, briefly cutting through the fog and reaching the spectators near the outskirts of the arena.

However, it was a wasted effort. All the attack had managed to do to the mech was scratch it. Without some sort of specialised material in the blade it wasn't going to do much to Wraith's heavy armor.

"Tch. Guess I'll have to get that buffed out." Marcus grunts in a slightly annoyed tone.

In reply Wraith reaches out with its right hand to grab hold of the husky, aiming for her shirt in an attempt to yank her up off the ground. The idea was to grab hold of her and while she's imobilised, give her a weak shockwave from its Plasma Stakes. Not enough to do any major internal damage like a full blast could to one as small as her, but it would certainly hurt all the same.

But that would rely in her staying put and not getting out of the way. Given its other attack attempts so far that wasn't looking likely.

Bangle charge completed. Effect will now activate.

The already chilly weather that had slowly begun to saturate the arena quickly became even colder, but only in an area a few feet around Blaire. However, that was all the young Mobian needed in order for her to be able to use her cryokinetic abilities.

Now this is what I needed.

The canine was disappointed that her sword hadn’t done more than a simple scratch to her robotic opponent’s armored body. At Wraith’s mention of getting the scuff burnished, Blaire let out an irritated sigh, drawing her ears back and narrowing her eyes. “By the time this battle is over, that metallic body of yours is going to need far more than simple ‘burnishing’.

Before she could launch another attack, however, Wraith reached out to try and grab Blaire by her shirt. The canine quickly evaded the attack with a backflip and while still in mid-air, she formed several sharp shard of ice with the use of her powers. As soon as she landed, she tossed the shards in Wraith’s direction. However, they were supposed to be used to attack her opponent. Rather, the shards were to serve as a distraction – if things went as the dog hoped, the robot would either try to shoot at the shards, avoid them, or perhaps both. Anything that would draw his attention away from Blaire as she headed for the other side of the battle arena.

The tools that had fallen from the scaffolding following Wraith’s last attack had given Blaire a great idea. Surely, a hammer or something like such would be able to put a dent in the robot’s armor. It would be too risky to grab one of the tools near her opponent, but there were plenty of them scattered around the arena that she could use.

The dog squinted as she made her way through the thickening fog. She hoped that it wouldn’t get too dense, as that would put her at a huge disadvantage.

Better get this match done as quickly as possible.

The shards of ice fly towards the mech as it returns to an idle position. Rather than act it simply stares them down, allowing the shards to harmlessly bounce and shatter against its chest plate. The drop in temperature was enough to cause the areas impacted to freeze over slightly, but otherwise the attack was ineffective.

"Another cryokinetic? Do all Mobian canines share this genetic ability or something?" Marcus ponders as he inspects the remains of the shards. This was increasingly looking like his first match all over again.

Glancing back towards where its opponent was standing, Wraith appears to have lost its target in the fog. A distraction? This didn't bode well. Last time it lost an opponent in the fog it never found them again. But this time would be different.

Turning its attention to the right side of the bridge, the mech activates its thrusters and leaps from the side to land in the dried up moat below. It travels for about 10 metres before coming to a halt and turning to face the bridge once more.

"I really didn't want to do this given the structure's age but... I'm sure they can rebuild."

Wraith throws its arms out to its side as it leans back a little, a set of pods launching from its back and flying outwards in an arc towards the bridge. At the apex of the arc, roughly 5 metres away, the pods split open to reveal a payload of much smaller missiles. Missiles that were now headed towards their intended target. They would randomly land in a 5 metre radius around where they were aimed, each exploding with a 1-2 metre blast radius. Needless to say anything caught in the middle would not be getting out unscathed, and the surrounding area would warm up drastically, if only for a few moments.

Wrath's intended target was the bridge where it once stood. Or at least where it thought the bridge was. Its calculations should be pretty spot on but it's hard to tell with the fog that currently masked the area. There was little doubt that the bridge would not sustain the damage incurred from the blasts, nor would the gatehouse if a stray missile hit. Were it any other way there was a good chance it wouldn't have taken this long to launch them. But with little other choice it was a risk that had to be taken. Surely the people would understand.

With the fog growing thicker as time passed on, Blaire knew she needed to end this battle as soon as she could. Through the miasma she searched, trying to find another way to deal damage to her opponent, as neither her sword, nor her ice could make more than a scratch in Wraith’s metallic body. The canine wished that she could simply take her sword and slice through the fog, anything to make the search easier.

She wasn’t sure at first, but after several seconds, the young Mobian thought she could see the faint outline of scaffolding ahead. Blaire soon found herself smirking at the sight, thinking that surely she’d have the advantage over her foe in just mere moments.

It was at this time that the husky found herself running across the bridge. A soft chuckle escaped her throat as she crossed it, the soles of her boots creating a rhythmic clonk, clonk sound against the stones making up the conduit.

Then, all hell broke loose.

It started with the sound of whistling that caught Blaire’s attention. The canine couldn’t quite see anything through all the fog, but she knew that something was coming her way.

Her first instinct had been to get away. Whether it be by running, jumping, ducking, it didn’t matter. She just knew she needed to get to safety before whatever it was barreled into her.

But it had all happened so fast and before Blaire could even make the attempt to get away, her hearing was bombarded with several loud explosions, in rather close proximity, no less. Next, heaps of dust had mixed in with the fog, obscuring her vision even more. Finally, the husky felt her sense of direction failing her, finding herself up and down, tumbling head over heels as she was sent flying.

This had all taken place within a matter of seconds, but to Blaire it felt much longer, like her life was a movie and someone had chosen that moment to hit the ‘slow’ button on the machine. Her grasp of time returned as soon as she hit the ground with surprising force, the air rushing out of her lungs. A huge stab of pain followed as a piece of the bridge landed on her lower back. It wasn’t a very large piece, certainly nothing that could crush her, but as the pain grew, the canine was sure it would prove to be very detrimental.
