Intro/History:

I have played Gran Turismo since its first release in 1998(1997 in Japan) and been a fan since. My friend told me about it and I got a demo of it and was amazed by the graphics and how many cars there were. I was a huge fan of the Dodge Viper and the demo allowed me to drive it, after that I had to have it! Got GT2 right when it released and was amazed by how much content they added to it. 500 cars and a ton more tracks. Plus it added rally for the first time which was cool. GT3 came out and was crazy eye candy. It blew everything out of the water in graphics but I was disappointed. It seemed they traded content and quality for graphics, it had less than half the cars/tracks of GT2 but I still enjoyed it for what it was. GT4 just blew them ALL away with the most content of all the GTs and added new unique game modes to keep things fresh and not just a constant grind. GT5 eventually came out and it had more problems compared to the rest. It felt slightly rushed. There were annoyances I had with it such as the career mode was too short, B-Spec went from a nice optional feature to mandatory, etc but despite its flaws the pros far outweighed the cons and it added many new features that made it the best GT compared to all those before it. Now onto GT6!

My impressions:

I haven't gotten super far into the game but I can already say this, this is what GT5 should have been! It fixes the problems I had with GT5 and adds a ton more content. The car count is upped to over 1200 cars and there are a lot more tracks including ones that have never been there before. It also hass a much beefier career mode that is more fun. They brought back the Coffee Break and Mission challenges to keep things mixed up. It fixes the annoying loading times and is much quicker and streamlined. But the meat and potatoes of ANY simulator is the physics and I have to say the physics have been massively improved. GT5 had good physics already but these just feel right. Tire grip, suspension, everything just feels great. I am a better driving in GT6 because it more accurately simulates physics. It even goes as far as simulating everything that effects driving conditions such as atmospheric pressure, temperature, etc. Technically it is a marvel! It may look graphically the same as GT5 but it adds 50Xs the HDR lighting(lighting and shadows are in real time and not baked in like most of GT5 and its competitors) and has adaptive tessellation(which makes the car models more detailed the closer you get). Adaptive tessellation wasn't even heard of when PS3 came out and has only been used in super advanced PC games that require lots of power, yet they were able to squeeze this out of 7 year old tech. Things are also looking bright for the future of this game. They will be doing several large patches which add new exciting features like a very advanced course maker to make your own tracks, new cars, among others. My overall score for this game is 9/10. As far as racing goes it's the best you can get on consoles as of now and it does what it sets out to do very well.

Questions?

If you have any questions just ask, otherwise hope you enjoyed reading.

I haven't played Gran Turismo since the ps2, which was where I got into Burnout, burnout was more of a fast paced racing game with near realistic collisions and was rather addicting

It makes me very happy to buy vehicles without worrying about a silly driving level. Now that I have that out of the way...The Goodwood speed challenge is very neat and offers an interesting set of vehicles to test your limits with. One of these is the KTM X-BOW R, a very particular light weight car...thing. I've since obtained one by all golding an event. I won't say which. The career is just as fun as always giving a diverse set of events like night driving and Kart challenges.

The upcoming concept cars are very interesting, or the ones that they give artwork for anyway.

I've done quite a number of events including the Lunar Exploration trials and have been wow'd so far.

The driving level didn't bother me much although it is nice to be able to buy whatever you want with the right amount of money. Also glad the used car dealer is gone. Oh! I forgot to mention that, I love that the career events make you drive different types of cars so you have to experience every type out there. What car did you get after the Fit? I won 6 or 7 races with it then bought the '78 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Had to because I drive a '01 Firebird. Haha It's going to take forever to collect all the cars I want.

I went ahead and bought an 09 Audi TTS Coupe after the Fit. A few cars here and there after that but nothing classy. A few I'm currently interested in the Nissan GT-R GT500 Stealth Model, Acura NSX Concept and the '96 Lotus Elise Race Car It may be a while here as well. You know what was sharp was the Honda CR-Z Touring Car. I may spend extra credits just to to take a few pictures for system backgrounds.

I had the McLaren F1 Stealth Model in GT5 for preordering. I didn't preorder this time because I wanted to start the game with nothing and not have an advantage to start. I really like the NSX Concept, I hope they make it production soon! Word on the street is the new BMW M4 will be added this week but no confirmation other than it IS coming.

As for DLC I want Seattle Circuit! We've already seen trailers of GT6 with the track on it in GT6 so hopefully it comes as a free update? I also would like Pikes Peak.
*Edit* BMW M4 now in GT6! http://www.gtplanet.net/bmw-m4-now-available-in-gran-turismo-6/

Old topic but I wanted to comment on my experience so far with the game.

I gotta say I was pretty mad that the game forced me to buy the Fit as my first car. Part of the fun of playing a brand new racing game is looking over the car selection for the first time and choosing your first car. What was the point of taking away that freedom?

Aside from that though I am pleased with the rest of the game so far. The physics feel really good and intuitive. It's downright amazing how the game shows you through challenges and tests that making very slight tweaks to your driving style can save you several seconds on your lap times. This really does show the depth of the physics engine. I also really like the Willow Springs race track. It was in Need for Speed Shift, but in Shift they added a lot of extra props compared to the real thing, like extra stands and fences. Seeing the track without anything around but the desert is very impressive, and also a little spooky after seeing it in Shift.

I've never really liked the license tests, so I'm glad that you only have to do like five test instead of ten now, and that it's easier to get gold. I would prefer to do actual racing instead of wasting my time on tests.

I'm actually kind of sad that the used car lot is gone. A big part of GT's fun to me is glancing through the used car listings and searching for rare cars. Being able to just buy any car any time you want takes away the fun of the hunt, and then the car's just not as satisfying to own and drive afterwards. But at least now it is easier to get some cars I've always wanted to try, like the GT-R pace car.

Did you know that if you play GT5 or 6 on your birthday, the game gives you a car built in your birth year as a present? In GT5, I got the 1985 Peugeot 205 t16, which was really cool since it's the road version of the legendary 205 t16 Group B rally car. The first day I played GT6 was also my birthday (Groundhogs Day) and this time I got an old 1986 Toyota Celica GT Four. Not quite as impressive, but at least I got to use that instead of the stupid Fit for my first races.

My second car that I bought was a 1999 Mazda RX-7 FD, which I'm really loving. The small rotary engine makes it very light on its feet, and the rear wheel drive means it crisply oversteers around corners in a predictable yet exciting way. It feels really good in the GT6 physics engine. So far it's my favorite car.

Now...if only GT could have the body customization, paint customization, engine swaps, and drivetrain swaps of Forza, it would be exceptional. I really, really love Forza's car customization, but I now think GT does everything else better honestly. Customization may only be one thing, but it's a HUGE thing to me. It's why I still play both series. Again, a lot of the fun for me in racing games is being able to customize my car exactly the way I want it. And not just in terms of tuning, but also visuals.

It's no problem being an old thread. I've played it a lot more now and gotten pretty far. I still need to finish a few races but I think I'm at 70 or 80% done somewhere around there. Just got the new cars by beating the seasons. The Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo Concept that was shown at SEMA and the Mercedes Benz AMG VGT Race Car. They have a new track coming that is the longest in GT history, even longer than the Nurburgring. Although I personally am waiting for the new course maker. It's vastly improved but to what extent I want to see.

Willow Springs is also my favorite track. On my stats it's the most raced track I've driven too. It looks beautiful and I've been to Southern California so it's very familiar. My second favorite is the Matterhorn, another beauty. I'm just hoping the Seattle Circuit is released later as it has been in several trailers.

I'm real curious to see what sort of track that could be then, with it being longer than the Nurburgring.

I don't think I've been to Matterhorn yet. However, I'm really liking the hillclimb event at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. After using twelve different cars there and getting straight golds with all of them, I think I know that track up and down. The time attacks there make me think of when I used to do autocross in real life.

Every now and then I think about going back to doing it in real life, but racing in real life is nowhere near as convenient as it is in video games. In a video game you do multiple events at all kinds of tracks within a couple hours. In a real life autocross event, you race for about five minutes then spend the rest of the day hanging around a parking lot and picking up cones.

You got a racing wheel? I have a Driving Force GT, and using it makes the game so, so, SO much more immersive it's ridiculous. I think I play even better with the wheel than I do with the controller now.

I need to get one again. I had one for GT5 but I sold it because I didn't use it enough but I feel like I would now with GT6. The Driving Force GT is the best for the money despite the lack of an H shifter. Great force feedback and only slightly over $100. I need to get a proper stand for it though I was using it on my tv dinner table and it just wasn't convenient.

As far as the tracks go I like all of the new ones they've added. Ascari has a good learning curve to it though but once I got used to it, it was fun. Bathurst is amazing during night too! You can see the city in the background all lit up and the stars look great too.

Here are some of my best pics I took in photo mode. I've taken a lot and really just got lucky on these.

I got very fortunate with my wheel. A used game shop in my area was selling them for $25 a few years ago. Maybe they just didn't have the room to store them and wanted to get rid of them. Anyway I jumped on it since it was such a killer deal.

Bathurst is another one of those tracks that was in other racing games before it was in GT. I think it was in the first Forza game, and NFS Shift 2 has it as well. It's a very awe-inspiring track. Supposedly, out of all the race courses in the world, it's the one with the biggest change in elevation. I can definitely believe it, since you wind your way up that mountain and then back down again.

So you like the muscle cars I see. Even though I am American I have to say I'm not that interested in them. The problem is nearly every American performance car is basically the same recipe: V8, front engine, and rear wheel drive. I want more variety. My favorite car right now is my Mitsubishi Evo Tommi Makinen edition. I could take some pictures myself but I haven't tried the Photo Mode yet. So you can get the pictures off the PS3 then?

That's a very good deal! Anyway I like muscle cars but not exclusively. I do mix it up because, I also like variety. A FF car handles much differently than a FR and yeah you can take pictures in photo mode or during a replay then you have the option to export it to the XMB while viewing them in the gallery.

Here are a few more I took:

Those are some pretty nice pictures. I keep thinking about making some of my own but never do it. I'm real tempted to try taking some of my Caterham Super 7 or my Light Car Company Rocket. The superlights are my favorite part of the game, as you can see :)

I wanted to drop one more post now that I'm closing in on finishing GT6. All I have left is getting gold in some of the F1 races and finishing up the NASCAR Cup.

It was a great ride, but towards the end, this question kept coming to my mind: "Is that it?"

There are some really nice features compared to GT5, but it also feels like it's missing a lot of content compared to GT5 as well. What disappoints me the most is how there's almost no rallying. All you get is one cup and a couple of time trials. There isn't even a cup for ice racing at all.

The Special Event selection just doesn't compare to GT5 as well. In GT5 you had Top Gear, the NASCAR experience, the Italy experience, the AMG Driving Academy at the Nurburgring, the Sebastian Loeb rallying challenge, and a bunch of other things. In GT6, the Goodwood Hill Climb and the Lunar Explorer missions are fun curiosities, but I feel like GT5's special events had more variety and entertainment value.

Vettel's Red Bull challenge can be fun...once you get over the steep learning curve of driving an F1 car. But until then I found most of the events to be quite frustrating and annoying. I also really hate how the game gives you these F1 cars when you finish the events, and then you find out their performance index is too good for them to be used in any events outside of the F1 races. The best cars in the game turn out to be quite worthless in single player, then. It's a damn shame.

I never thought I'd say this, but I kind of miss the Endurance events. The S class was short, but I really enjoyed it since the longer races put some more strategy into the racing beyond just tuning your car and driving your best. You also have to evaluate the weather conditions, when your opponents are pitting, and when is the best time for you to pit. Instead of being boring like in the older games, the Endurance events would have been a lot of fun with all these strategic elements in place. How hard could it be to program some endurance cups once you've got all your tracks and cars in the game? All you'd have to do is put a button on the race menu for the new event, and then code in "take player to X circuit with Y amount of laps/time and Z amount of cars".

This game's also really easy compared to GT5. Used to I could never get all golds on hardly anything, be it license tests or special events. Now I'm frequently getting golds on my first try, or within the first couple tries. The only events that really make me pull my hair out are the F1 races and the NASCAR cup. Otherwise I felt kind of like the game wasn't putting up much of a fight, and in the end I'm a little disappointed the game didn't challenge me more. Sure, the game always puts you in last place or close to last place, but this game also has serious AI rubberbanding. The racers in first always slow down to let you catch up, and THEN they actually start trying once you're in front. I feel more like I only won because the game let me win, instead of it feeling like it was my skill that let me win. I would prefer to have no rubberbanding, but then let me do a qualifying lap first so that I can place better at the start of the race.

But like I said though, it was a fun ride and I'm glad for the experience. What the game did have in it was great. The S Class semi-endurance events were all a lot of fun. The Lunar Experience was a fun diversion. I really love the new super lights they have in the game. I feel like a much better driver after finishing the game, compared to when I started. It's just too bad that in the end I felt kind of like I was playing a stripped down version of GT5.

Well you have to remember GT5 didn't have half the features it does now when it launched. Hopefully they get on the ball with the updates. I guess GT6 and GT7 prologue is too much for their small team.

Actually, no, I don't remember, because I started playing GT5 very late into its life cycle.

However, I don't think there's any excuse to not have more rallying events and endurance events from the start. The appropriate cars and tracks are already created in the game, and I bet that's 99% of the work done right there. It should be easy to create events and cups once those things are present. All you'd have to do is modify the menu with some more buttons, set up some races with the right parameters, and link those races to the buttons. Modifying menus is drop dead easy once you have the database and the resources set up behind the scenes.

I could set up my own endurance race right now in arcade mode if I wanted to. Why can't their staff?

I think I may go back to Forza 4 for a while once I've finished this game. The physics might not be on par with GT, but the car selection (in quality, not quantity) and customization is way better.
