Walkers, Walkers everywhere
With the 7th generation of consoles entering it's final days, I figured now would be a good time to post this thread, it being an open to the community retrospective of the 7th generation of consoles.

My -personal- thoughts:

Wii: Ah, the first 7th gen console I ever owned. I still remember when I first played Wii Tennis, all those years ago. I got it back in Christmas of 2009 (along with SSBB, Wii Sports and Sonic and the Secret Rings) and I played it for years on end. As time passes, the more I begin to dislike it as it has little support and aside from some really good games, the controls just didn't work for me.

PS3: The VERY first HD console I ever owned for myself. I first bought AC3 and Batman Arkham City, and ever since October of 2012, I play it for hours on end it is my prefered console of the 7th gen. Aside from the controller which cramps up in my hand after about an hour.

Xbox 360: Love it. I REALLY like the exclusives such as Dead Rising and Gears of War, however my one complaint is the of course, required pay to play online, despite the fact Steam has all of XBL's features minus the monthly fee. This is where I domainly play my digital games thanks to my XBLG.

Gonna dropkick it.

Good vibes.
The only 7th gen console I owned was the 360. And I quite liked it.

...Yeah, that's all I have to say, really.

Short and sweet there Finite.

I owned a 360 and a Wii, I got the Wii randomly about four years ago and I never really played any Wii-centric games on it apart from Mario Kart online, I mostly used it for playing GameCube and retro games on it, I wanted to give Nintendo a chance as I used to always play Nintendo consoles loyally but I cannot get into gimmicks.

My 360 was a beast, he had a custom Lian-Li case and worked fantastically until I tried playing Lego Batman and he flaked out and Red Ringed, stuck him in the oven, reset the heat sinks he worked fabulously again. Then when my ex and I broke up (five years ago) I stupidly forgot to lift the 360 so that was the end of my console gaming. I like the control for the 360 as it allows me to rest my hands comfortably and without complaint.

I mostly just play on the PC/Steam these days though. No space for consoles.

Wii. Had one in December of '06, then fast forward to 2008 or so it was stolen from me. Well, half my Gamecube games were stolen, and a little bit of my Wii collection too.

I still play it for the VC games you can get on there. Wish I can get a Wii U but I've decided that the 3DS would be my last system. Maybe when I'm finally moved out from my parents I can branch out some more and get a 360 and a Wii U. Maybe.

I've had all three systems, really only used the 360 and the Wii though. But I will be pulling out the PS3 for the FFX HD (any idea when that gets released, anyone??)

I like the Wii. I enjoyed alot of games on it. I think it was a great idea when it came out. And it obviously worked very well for Nintendo. However, alot of games didn't work right on it. Like Sonic and the Secret Rings for example..(do you know how long it took me to figure out u had to turn the remote sideways?? lmao!) But whenever Nintendo developed their own game they seemed to always get it right. As of right now though, I really don't play it too often.

I play 360 everyday. It's corny, but I think I enjoy it more than the Wii simply because of Live and achievements..it keeps the competition with friends going, and thus it's more entertaining. And achievements bring more replay value to games. Whoever thought of that was a genius.

I don't use the PS3 too often simply because not many of my friends do, either. All of my friends are on Xbox Live. But like I said as soon as FFX is released my life will be sold to it, at least for a little while . :)

Kimmie it looks as though the release date for Japan is December 26th, whereas for the European and US/Canadian markets it merely says Winter 2013/2014 so your guess would be as good as mine.

I think that was a problem for me when I played modern day consoles this obsession with achievements and doing dumb stuff to get a rating. Gone are the days when merely completing a difficult/challenging game was its own achievement now we need to 'shoot random person in the ass five times' or 'jump on this box twice' to get stuff. Thanks but no thanks.

Granted the more competitive gamers will work through every achievement and get them all. Personally I rarely revisit a game unless it blew my mind with epic story-telling and stuff.

This generation of consoles was very fun, but there's something I find extremely troubling about it.

First, the good. It's very interesting to see what the first online-centric generation of consoles has brought to the table. Gaming is now a much more social activity than it once was, and now I think I take it for granted sometimes. There are now occasions when I'm playing my Super Nintendo, and I want to know what my online friends are doing. Then I go to press the "home" button and realize "Oh....right." You never really feel like you're alone anymore when you're playing games, and now it's much easier to get together with other gamers to do whatever.

However, there's a dark side to online play that I don't think many people think about. And it's not griefers or trolls or what have you.

It's my impression that most people finish a game, and then sell it to buy the next game. They must be with how well Gamestop and the other used game shops are doing. I'm not like that. If I buy a game, I always go in planning to keep it. You can count the number of games I've sold over my lifetime on two hands. Because of this, I have accumulated a collection of games spanning almost 30 years. I want the ability to play ANY game I have EVER purchased at ANY time I feel like it, no matter how old it is. For the Xbox, PS2, and Gamecube and any console released before then, this is no problem at all as long as your hardware still functions.

However, the 7th generation of consoles will be a different story. I keep dreading the day when they finally turn off the Xbox 360's networks. No way to get DLC anymore, unless it's put on a disc. No way to get critical patches anymore, again unless it's put on a disc. And obviously there will no longer be online play for any games that depended on it.

Not to mention I think the online network has made programmers lazy when it comes to companies properly testing their games. They just push the game out to meet a deadline and then put out patches to fix glaring bugs afterwards. If they did this in the PS2 era, people would be up in arms about it and that company would be demonized. Nowadays people might make a little fuss about it but then the issue's dropped after the day-one patch.

What happens to the people who buy the games after the Xbox 360's network is gone? What if the game they bought had a crippling bug that could only be fixed by a patch that's supposed to be downloaded from the non-existent network? The PS3's going to be the same way too I imagine. And I also feel very disturbed that no one really talks about this, except me. Everyone's focused on the next thing coming out.

From the sounds of it, the PS4 and XB1 will be even worse in this regard. I'm concerned that it'll be much much harder in the future to be a retro gamer, compared to now.

I loved the 360, until I got tired of all the crap with it. The wii sorta collected dust as I either buy a game to renew my interest or play one of the few games I can only play on the Wii and not on any other consoles.

The PS3 however, was something Ive been missing out for years. I bought the system a few years ago, and is my favorite console of the three. its simply better in every way I can think of.

I have a wii U now, and I have plans to stick to Sony, feeling that Microsoft has worn out its welcome with me.

I only owned a PS3 but my roommates had a 360. It's no secret that I've always preferred Playstation. Some of my favorite games of all time were on the PS3. The Uncharted series, The Last of Us, and Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time. I am tempted to sell it to fund a PS4 but there are too many games I want to play and don't want to rebuy by selling the collection. Plus there are lots of games coming out I want to get Ratchet Into the Nexus just came out, Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, Final Fantasy X HD, Gran Turismo 6. It will still get good games for another two years probably and then it'll just be all sports/cross gen games.
