Angel Island Act 1
|
As far as I remember, Sonic was a super-hero from the days of old, when the tyrannical Dr Kintobor ruled the planet of Mobius with an iron-fisted army of soul-less steel behemoths. Every night he came to this Inn to savor the ciders made from apples grown from the bronze forests of Sunset Hills. He never drank too much cider so that his wife, Alecia Acorn, had to come down and pick him up. He was a good-spirited gentleman who livened the inn up on the harshest of winter nights. The Purple Apple Inn was named for the famous purple apples it brewed its house-special cider from. On this windy night, it radiated heat from the rain-battered window onto the frost-dusted street below. A warm orange light from the covered glass lanterns bathed the occupants inside in their warming glow. Sonic took a small sip from his tall glass and set it down again, he seemed a little on edge this night. He brushes the whitening fur back on his head and the innkeeper asked him what was wrong. “The Banshee of the Sunken Ruins visited my child last night” he said almost trance-like in response. A hushed silence fell upon the chattering regulars of the Purple Apple. I had not heard of such a creature before and before I could ask, Sonic had put on his raincoat and was headed towards the door. “Wait!” I cried “What is this banshee you mentioned?” Sonic looked in my direction with a haunted look glazed over his eyes and mumbled something inaudible before walking out the door. “You won't get him to talk about it” came a rough sounding voice from behind me. “What?” “Take up a stool beside me if you want to hear the tale of what else happened in the Aquatic Ruins Zone” said the mysterious figure with faded red dreadlocks. Intrigued, I pulled up a stool and asked the innkeeper for two of his finest. The figure turned to me, one of his eyes was glazed over, blind, the other focused rather lazily on me but behind it lay a certain attentiveness that made me feel rather uneasy. The inn suddenly did not seem so warm and inviting to me so I took a sip of cider to warm my bones. The mysterious person spoke slowly in a melancholy voice. “You see, me and Sonic go way back, we were fighting off the evil Dr Kintobor in the deserted zones” he took a long swig from his glass “everyone who was smart had gotten out of those zones before they were completely glassed over. We were fighting through them just fine until we reached the deserted temples in the underwater regions of the Aquatic Ruins...” Knuckles did his usual routine of cracking his knuckles in anticipation of the coming fight. Kintobor had infected the Aquatic Ruins with his evil presence, the very water tainted with a slight off-purple hue. Sonic and his friend, Tails, the two-tailed mechanical genius had made it through the Emerald Hills laden with many devious devices Kintobor had left for them. Kintobor had a thing for taking the inhabitants of a region and creating robotic replicas of them, a jaded image of the goodness that they were and equipping them with weapons that did horrific things to flesh. “I don't get it, this place doesn't look too bad” said Tails. “Yeah but with the doc, we can never be too careful” Sonic retorted to his long-time friend. Tails twisted his tails together and took off overhead to scout out the region in front of us and returned a minute later to tell me what Knuckles had initially suspected: the ruins were mostly submerged and we would probably have to swim through some sections. Not what Sonic had wanted to hear as he still had a slight lingering phobia of water from his childhood after his mother, Sonia had let him wander off too close to the pond in his back garden. Sonic looked out over the vast expanses of the ruined buildings of a long-lost civilisation. Various temples with cylindrical pillars and slanted roofs peppered the water. Some of the bigger temples had giant columns of stone steps leading up to them and Knuckles wished he had the time to explore these ruins as he could just feel the history radiating off of them. Moss and vines overgrew some of the smaller buildings and had turned them into hulking green behemoths. On a closer inspection of the water, a whole maze of buildings of various shaped and sized with narrow alleyways between them could be seen below the surface. It was literally an entire ancient city down there long lost to the rising ocean of times passed. 'How long can you hold your breath Tails?' Knuckles said over his shoulder. 'A very long time' he replied in a carefree manner and took a jumping dive into the water, his sleek form slid through the surface with not so much as a ripple. Sonic watched for a second before muttering to himself a few obscenities and dove in after him, Knuckles following shortly after. The bottom of what appeared to be an ancient street was around 100ft below the surface, the time it would take to reach this depth and do a little exploring was of no concern to the trio as all three were in such peak physical condition that their lungs and heart could manage it. Tails swam gracefully downwards, using his twin tails to propel him at speed so it was little surprise to Knuckles that tails hit the bottom first, followed after a couple of minutes by Sonic and Knuckles. Tails had used these minutes to get a bearing on his surroundings and tapped Sonic on the should and gave him a couple of deft hand gestures made tricky by the water resistance. 'Large building on our right' was what he had symbolized. Sonic nodded and motioned for Knuckles to follow. The large building was like the other semi-submerged temple-like structures they had seen on the surface but on a more grander scale. Rows of stone steps ascended to the pitch black opening at the top. The opening was nothing special, enough room for three people to squeeze through easily. The darkness inside though sent a shiver down Sonic's spine. Sonic shrugged it off and started swimming, rather than walking, up the stone steps. After a minute or two they reached the entrance and waited for Knuckles to click on his diving torch. He handed it to Tails before producing a second one from his pouch. Tails pushed his paws together with open palms slowly. Sonic and Knuckles both knew what it meant. 'Claustrophobia' Second and final part coming soon.
