(This is a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon fanfiction story place type thing. NOTE: It will contain scenes of violent nature. I will let you know when these scenes start and end, so if you wish to skip them, you may do so.) Chapter 1: Who Are You? “Man, this place is dark. I can barely see my arms in front of my face.” “Oh, quit your whining you crybaby, we’re here on business.” “I know that, Sneasel, I’m just saying it’s dark.” “Well, Grovyle, you wanna go home? I can handle this on my own.” “Yeah, I’m not gonna risk you getting hurt. What happens if I’m not here to carry you back home?” As the two Pokémon ventured forward into the cave, arguing, they passed through many rooms, Grovyle relying on Sneasel’s natural ability to see in the dark to guide them. There was a criminal in this cave, and Grovyle wouldn’t rest until he, she, or it, was brought to justice. “So how much farther? I wanna kick some ass!” Sneasel said impatiently “I couldn’t read a map even if I had one, so we’ll just have to wander around and hope for the best. At least you can see.” With a long-suffering sigh, Sneasel continued, though not without making a turn and stopping abruptly, making Grovyle walk straight into a wall. “Again? This is the twelfth time in the last hour, don’t you get tired of that?” Grovyle complained, rubbing his snout which was now just as red on the top as it was on the bottom. “Nope, you make funny noises.” It was Grovyle’s turn to sigh and followed his companion into the neverending darkness. Espeon made her way through the cave with the other two members of her team, Umbreon and Sylveon. Umbreon was using her natural abilities to glow, illuminating the cave. Sylveon carefully pranced behind her, being sure not to hurt herself by stepping on any sharp rocks. Umbreon was on alert, ready to strike at any foe to show their face. Espeon was quite calm, in a state of zen that allowed her to sense the area around her, alerting her to any change in terrain, or if a Pokémon was close. “I don’t like caves, they’re so… Gray. It’s boring!” Sylveon whined, much to Umbreon’s irritation. “Shut it! You’ve been complaining the whole time! If you want to remain on this team, you WILL shut your trap and focus on the mission on hand.” Umbreon snapped back. “Sheesh, killjoy… Why do you have to be so meeeeean?” Sylveon asked, her fur-ribbons drooping a little. “Don’t be so harsh, Umbreon. And Sylveon, she does have a point. Complaining about this cave won’t suddenly make it any more colorful. We have a lost child to find, so we should focus on that.” Espeon said. She hoped to resolve this situation. “Yes, ma’am.” Sylveon replied, as the trio continued through the cave. As Sneasel continued on, Grovyle followed close behind. He’d prefer to hold her hand, if only so he wouldn’t have to listen for her footsteps. Unfortunately, doing so usually ended with her reminding him of the ‘no touching’ rule. She was hard to get along with, but she was still his friend and a great partner. If only she weren’t so... violent and cold. Though those mannerisms are expected from a Dark and Ice Type. He wondered what it was like to be able to see in the dark. “Do you see anything?” “Yes, rocks, rocks, and more f-cking rocks. Anything else you need, smart guy?” “It was just a question.” “And a stupid question from a stupid Pokémon.” “Shouldn’t we fight the criminal rather than each other?” “Shouldn’t we find it first?” Sneasel asked, a grin on her face, having gotten her partner to stop talking. At this point, they were entering a larger room in a deeper part of the cave, where the law-breaker was said to have been last sighted. “So what’s this guy guilty of?” “Do you read anything on the posters other than the rewards?” “Why in Arceus’ name would I do that?” Raising his hand to his face and sighing, Grovyle decided to enlighten Sneasel of their target. “He, at least reported as a he, is a crook, and has used many devious means to keep the police off his tail, including taking hostages, usually minors.” “Sounds like a Grade A jerkass. Any specifics?” “He hangs around in dark caves like this, so no reports on species or type. Assumed to be at least part Ground Type though.” “Heh, this’ll be cake.” “If you say so.” As they walked, Sneasel suddenly stopped Grovyle. “He’s here, somewhere in the next room over. I got this” “Don’t be-” Sneasel had already run off to get the criminal. “Stupid. Damn it Sneasel.” As he followed the sounds of his companion’s footsteps, he ended up in a medium-sized, hollow sort of hub room. Not that he could see that. What he could do was hear. Mainly the sounds of Sneasel locating their target. “Alright, give it up, you ain’t going anywhere. You can’t take me, so just come along quietly. Or not. I prefer not.” Sneasel said, grinning evilly, preparing her claws. Team Polarity had taken a different path from the first team, and were actually ahead of the first team. Espeon, having larger ears, heard the voice of Sneasel. “Oh, oh my… I think someone else may be here than just the child…” She said, a little worried. “Umbreon, you can see fine in places this dark, go back and see if you can find who just said that.” “...Who just said what?” Umbreon asked. “I heard a voice faintly behind us.” Espeon explained. “Sylveon and I will continue forward, see if we can’t find the child.” “...Okay. Please, stay safe.” Umbreon replied softly, nuzzling Espeon a little before taking off behind them. As she ran back through the cave, she noticed a different path, leading to a hollow chamber holding a Sneasel and a Grovyle. “Who are you? What are you doing here?” She asked as she stood hidden in the shadows, a hint of hostility in her voice. Something about the Sneasel made her fur stand on end, and that couldn’t be a good thing. Espeon and Sylveon continued forward, into a small chamber. The two saw a small Piplup, looking scared out of his mind. “It’s okay, little one. We’re here to return you home.” “Quick! Get me out of here before the bad man comes back!” Piplup said frantically. “...Bad Man?” Sylveon asked, worried. Sneasel aimed a blast of freezing air at what she recognized as a Golem. Icy Wind should be enough to- “Huh!?” The Golem was fast. “How’d you...? Rrrrr, get back here, you walking rubble heap!” From around the corner, Grovyle could hear Sneasel badmouthing their target, followed by the sound of claws rabidly scratching against stone. She was most likely just attacking in a frenzy. Suddenly, one sound echoed out of the room. A sickening *CRACK* “You... bastard...” then a thud, which he could only assume was Sneasel’s unconscious body hitting the floor, then dead silence. This was no small-time thief, and in this darkness, there was nothing Grovyle could do. Umbreon focused her attention on the Golem, the new threat. She quickly snuck up behind him, and let loose a Shadow Ball to damage it a bit. She would need to distract it until Espeon arrived. Espeon and Sylveon, with Piplup holding on to Sylveon’s ribbons, raced down the cave path. the two were in a panic, hoping to get back to Umbreon before she was hurt. The two ran as fast as their four legs would take them, and soon arrived in the cavern. Espeon’s luminescence lit up the room, aiding the other team in their fight. Grovyle noticed the light. “Now’s my chance.” Now able to see, he rushed into the room and spotted the Golem. Without breaking his pace, the leaves on his left arm glowed, and he slammed them into the Golem head on, the Leaf Blade doing serious damage, and knocking the criminal to the ground. Grovyle didn’t waste a second in thrusting his right hand to Golem’s forehead. The Rock Pokémon’s body shimmered a sickly green, and soon the green faded away, moving towards Grovyle. It wasn’t long before the Giga Drain had stolen what remained of Golem’s stamina, and the now unconscious Pokémon fell to the ground, unmoving. Grovyle turned to see the source of the light. “Many thanks, stranger. If it weren’t for you, I fear my friend would have met a horrible fate.” Grovyle walked over and picked up the unconscious Sneasel. “Who are you?” “My name is Espeon.” Espeon replied. “This is Sylveon, and over there is my pa-” “Ahem.” Umbreon said, interrupting her. “...My friend, Umbreon. We’re team Polarity. We came here to find a missing child.” Espeon said. “I assume the same brought you two here?” Grovyle gave a warm laugh. “Something like that, we were here to take out a criminal charged with theft and kidnapping. Anyway, I’d like to get back to town and help my friend, but unfortunately, without her guiding me, I’d only get lost in these caves. Would you mind escorting me?” “Not a problem!” Espeon said with a smile. “We’ll guide you back, and get your friend some help.” “Many thanks again. Oh, I can’t believe I was so rude, I didn’t introduce myself. I’m Grovyle, and this is Sneasel.” He said, gesturing to his unconscious partner he was carrying on his shoulder. “We are Rescue Inc. a rescue team from the nearby town. Glad to make your acquaintance.” He offered his free hand to Espeon. Espeon put her paw in his hand and gave him a handshake. “Yes, indeed. Glad to meet you!” As the group walked, they didn’t take long to find the cave’s exit. Grovyle had to wonder if Sneasel had been messing with him earlier, going around in circles. No, Sneasel knows the importance of a job, she was probably lost. He chuckled, imagining Sneasel denying anything that would imply she wasn’t perfect. As they exited the cave, the group started heading towards town. Grovyle needed to get Sneasel better, and soon. The longer she’s out, the grumpier she is when she got back up. |
