Thank you for your support.

Nintendo has learned that some consumers, including minors, have been exchanging their friend codes on Internet bulletin boards and then using Swapnote (known as Nintendo Letter Box in other regions) to exchange offensive material. Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop the SpotPass feature of Swapnote because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused.

Nintendo always wants to provide a positive experience for all consumers and limit the risk of any inappropriate activity or misuse of a service. We feel it is important on this occasion to take this action.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience to the many consumers who have been using this service responsibly; however this decision was made considering the point that many minors also use this feature of Swapnote. Thank you for your understanding.

Nintendo will continue to work to ensure more consumers are aware of our Parental Control features, which allow parents to manage their children’s experience on our systems. For more information, please click here.

Service stop date: Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, 7 p.m. PT
Service being stopped: Nintendo 3DS software Swapnote – Sending and receiving notes using SpotPass
Affected regions: All regions where the service was offered

Special Notes services are also stopped

So, the only service to contact the people on your friendlist has been ended (unless you wanted to message them via Animal Crossing). This, while we have parental control. I'm really confused about this, since I thought it was a great service to send cute things to your friends - I used it to send drawings to serveral people. I also have some random people added for my Pokemon XY friend safari, and used it to get them to know better, or at least send them a thank you.

That being said - Swapnote still offers its Streetpass feature. But it only works if that person is on your friendlist. So, you could just you know... talk to that person instead of using Swapnote.

Miiverse is coming to 3DS next month.

Wow..that's a shame. I had just finally started adding friends on my 3DS too :(. They should bring the Miiverse to the 3DS though. It makes it alot easier to communicate with everyone. Plus you have your messages on there. It would be a great replacement for Swapnote.

Eh, can't say I care much for it. I never had the time to check drawings and my skills when I do actually draw something is pretty terrible. So I don't really mind. I'm expecting Miiverse to come to the 3DS anyway so yeah.

Although it amuses me that they basically killed Nikki off.

Well, this is depressing. I loved sending my friends and such silly doodles and the like. :C

AND I HOPE NIKKI STAYS SOMEWHERE, SHE'S TOO CUTE. QAQ

Yeah, this is kind of a bummer. I was in the middle of unlocking all my features again since I didn't back up my SD card like a dope.

While I can see the reasoning I don't really get why the service as a whole had to be discontinued. It's not like the people engaging in such activities can really send them to anyone else but themselves. Classic case of the few idiots ruining it for the many.

Nikki should migrate to MiiVerse imo. Find her another job, ninty. She was super nice. :V

How does this AMUSE YOU? ;A;

*dramatically cries about loss of 3DS waifu*

...but really, a job in the Miiverse would be fitting.

...my last note I sent was to my girlfriend of me drawing myself with the 'handsome Squidward face'. Nice way to go out. :P

I'll miss Nikki and the special messages from Nintendo. D:

I was actually working on a Game Grumps drawing last night and it was my masterpiece. Now no one can enjoy it.

I want to see that, so very much!

I am certain that they will re-employ Nikki for the Miiverse release of things... It is a bit of a pity they are closing the service down but I assume they have a grand scheme in mind and probably will be improved upon when put into Miiverse or whatever they intend to do.

R.I.P Nikki...

And I just added people on my Friends List!

Also Jonathan, that is the best way to go out and Pianta, that poor Game Grumps drawing will never see the light of day.

Curse you Nintendo! People will do that kinda stuff anyway elsewhere even if you shut down the service. At least I happen to have Animal Crossing. Come to think of it, I haven't visited my town in a while... excuse me, I have business to attend to.

Ugh, I only had three contacts on my friends list and I was just adding more. This is a shame. And I can only speak to two of them online anyway, so I thought this was a great way to speak to them without having to log into Facebook and forums. And it was an easy way to share my drawings. Hopefully Nintendo comes to their senses and brings it back... though I doubt it.

Also, I miss Nikki. ;~; Nuuuu.
It all starts with this... A jewel containing the ultimate power!

Every world has its end. I know that's kinda sad, but... That's why we gotta live life to the fullest in the time we have. At least, that's what I figure.

It's a shame that people abused this service, if it wasn't it'd still be around. I never used it but it sounds like many people did and now it's one less feature the 3DS has. :\

rip in peace nikki

But seriously, I feel like the only person who doesn't care about this. Maybe it's my lack of friends on 3DS or friends in general, but I really didn't find it all that useful.

Then again, if I wasn't the only person in my school who uses such features on a regular basis (Anything but PS3/4 or Xbox 360/One is basically frowned upon in my school) I would probably feel differently.
Gonna dropkick it.

So the Miiverse removes the need for friend codes? Does this mean it'll work more along the lines of a username that you add?
