This should be taken with a huge grain of salt as it’s basically unsubstantiated rumor, but according to an anonymous source, Nintendo may be seeking to give seven Nintendo 64 games the HD treatment in a new effort called “reUmagined”. According to this source, seven titles will see the Wind Waker HD treatment, meaning textures and gameplay will be brought up to par for the Wii U.
Currently the only title being released by the source is Super Mario 64. Apparently, these releases are supposed to fill the gaps between larger Wii U releases over the coming months. Here’s what is said to be expected from this supposed reimagining of classic Nintendo 64 titles.
- The short development time allows these “big classic” titles to fill the gap in between Nintendo’s original Wii U software.
- Less to fund and fewer people involved means more resources to original titles in development.
- eShop only for $30 per title, reduces risk at retail.
- Wind Waker approach taken in terms of visual upgrades, but “reUmagined” titles will benefit from added content.
I can’t imagine Nintendo charging $30 for a re-released Super Mario 64, as that seems outrageous for a two generations old game, even if it does have the HD treatment. What do you think of this rumor? Could Nintendo be hoarding Nintendo 64 titles in order to bring them up to snuff for modern TVs? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

I would gladly welcome a HD remake of Mario 64 with added content (Maybe the DS features) as I can only imagine it would look stunning.
Other games I would like to see are Waverace, Pilot Wing and Blast Corps.

Eh... I saw this a few days ago. I honestly don't believe it will happen at all. There's nothing from Nintendo themselves that even hint they're working on a project like this. Just seems like something completely made up from this "anonymous source."

Plus, GameCube games like the Wind Waker are on a whole other level from N64 games. They would have to completely remake N64 games to have them near Wii U's graphics. Wind Waker wasn't completely remade, just upgraded the same visuals and everything.

So yeah, just seems like a silly rumor.

Yeah, it's exactly why PS1 games aren't made in HD. You can clean it up a bit but they will still look quite outdated because it's not just poor textures, it's poor geometry. Although Mario 64 could look decent. Cartoony games hold up fairly well when in comparison to games that go for realism.

I'd rather see more GC HD remakes. Resident Evil 0 HD and Resident Evil Remake HD would be awesome.

Pilot Wings would look amazing if it was all HD'd up. I remember playing that to death with my mum's fiancé. Also Super Mario 64? Oh heck yes, please!!

Goldeneye might be rather splendid too. But then they already re-made that for the Wii, so doubt it would be getting a look in.

But I do agree with Metallix, I would love to see some GameCube games getting some HD love... a few J-RPGs I can think of too that would look gorgeous (even more so than they were) on the GameCube.

I object to your claims
I'm skeptical. For one thing, I don't see an HD N64 game having Wii U-esque graphics - I see it going the Sonic Adventure 2 HD route, where the graphics are a bit crisper, but still look essesentially the same. And second, $30 for games that are nearly three generations old? Really? Yeah, this would be cool but I'm not going to hold my breath. Paper Mario if this is real though pls.

Huh. I was under the impression it was. Given that they changed things around and some things look a little too good to just be texture upgrades.

As for this rumour, I'm not convinced. I'd certainly welcome it if they did come out with something like this, but it seems like one of those too good to be true moments.

$30 AU would be alright with me. But since that's likely $30 US, we'd probably see them for $50 or something, which is a bit much.

Point is that they didn't rebuild everything from scratch. You pretty would have to for N64.

I suppose that's quite an unfortunate thing, which makes the N64 thing less likely, since they would need to remake it from the ground up, it might be too much effort for them to bother or finding it beneficial to them.

I just hope its actual remakes. Goldeneye 007 Reloaded greatly disappointed me. Like, I don't mind making changes and such, as long as they make sense. They basically took the whole movies plot completely out of its time period and put it in a new one. But this is a rant for another time.

I do hope that if Pilot Wings gets remade, its not like just mii(At least make them a option) and it has the 6 pilots. I loved the pilots. And I would LOVE to play Birdman again. That music man.

Some remastered tracks of Pilot Wings would be flat out awesome - I know they can do sensible remasters as Duck Tales remastered did incredibly well with its soundtrack!

Surely they wouldn't take the pilots out of the game and replace them all with Mii's that would just be ... rather ridiculous of them. I agree, hopefully they won't do that! I am sure some people would like to be themselves flying around like a pro, but other people enjoyed the pilots and their personalities.

Aye, Goldeneye for the Wii was horrid, it made me feel a lot less nostalgia for the N64 one, so I too am crossing my fingers that they do it PROPERLY and pay homage to the game, not just hype it up and it sucks.
