Take a look at this.

Could this be a new single player mode?
I only see one character on screen and the background doesn't look like its from any particular game.

To me, it looks like it could be from a metroid game. If it's not that, could it be the "make your own stage" feature?

Another idea that I just thought of is that they're making worlds that actually interact, not just a hub world where they appear. The background could be a fusion of two or more games.

It seems really familiar to me, but I just can't put my finger on it...

Reminds me a bit of one of the stages I played in the Rayman Legends demo, actually.

Nothing to say the other characters aren't just off-screen though. Sakurai has posted plenty of one-character shots before.

Sakurai did remind everyone that there will be no Subspace Emissary-like story when posting that screenshot. So it's likely connected to the some sort of replacement. Although I find his reason for cutting the said campaign dumb, I hope the series does its Adventure Mode again. Maybe with branching paths and stuff.

No more "edge camping"...

The bunch of tweaks they're doing to make this balanced is nice. But I'm curious... does someone actually take the time to hog an edge? >.>

New screenshot shows that Viridi will appear during the Kid Icarus stage, Probably shortly before the Reset Bomb is launched.

Oh yeah. Ledge hogging is a tactic I've seen used a lot. The idea is that if you grab a ledge just before someone else is about to, you can stop them from grabbing it and screw over their recovery. It's tricky to pull off though.

There's another thing that uses the same principle called "planking" which is even worse and nobody likes it. Basically you stay below the stage line and constantly grab the lip of the stage so you can avoid damage. The idea is to get a damage advantage early on and then camp for the rest of the match, forcing the opponent to approach you so you can punish them. It's a major dick move.

Random thing, when you play as Toon Link on the Spirit Track stage then he doesn't appear at the head of the train, instead its this guy Alfonzo.
Kinda pointless considering the Toon Link from Wind Waker (Where the Smash Bros Toon Link is taken from) and the Toon Link from Spirit Tracks are two completely different Links but I guess it will avoid some confusion while playing.

No edge-hogging? That kinda sucks. It's useful if you time it right and helps a whole lot in taking stocks at low percentages if you play it out right. Sometimes even sealing your opponent's fate if the character doesn't have a damaging recovery move, like Captain Falcon's Up+B.

I think my question would be: how many people own a Wii U? And would you buy it just to play it? I mean, I'm sure a good number of people own a 3DS so it would be an easy decision on a money stand point, but for it to be on the big screen seems so nice.

I object to your claims
To answer your question Fen, I've never taken the time to hog the edge.

Well, I already have a Wii U, so I'm definitely getting that version. But hey, I might just get the 3DS version for the different stages and being able to play Smash Bros. on the go.

My friend has a Wii U I practically use as my own, so we're just going to split for a copy of the Wii U version. I'll be buying my own 3DS copy too, of course. Smash on the go is too good to pass up.

The Beetle weapon from Skyward Swords is confirmed as an Item, It latches on to players and carries them into the air.

A Kid Icarus themed stage for the Wii U version?
Granted Kid Icarus got his start on the NES but this looks very much based on Uprising.
Does this hint at a new Kid Icarus game for the Wii U in the works?
Well, I seem to be the only one updating this thread at the moment, but hey . . .

Lucario confirmed as a returning character, No word on his Mega form as yet but I'll be surprise if it doesn't become his new Final Smash.

Implying Sakurai has to change him up just because of changes in the Pokémon series.

I wouldn't be surprised if he remains pretty much unchanged, Aura changes aside. All in all I don't feel particularly strongly about his return either way. Although it does make me think that Mewtwo probably isn't coming back, then.

Pit's moveset was completely redesigned based on a newer game, It's not completely out of the question.

Two new specials does not equal completely redesigned.

But yes, it's possible. Just not likely to be anything more than an aesthetic change.
