Carnival Night Act 1
In a far distant portion of space, particles of blackness began to swirl. No one would have been able to notice until they coalesced into a shape, but even then it would be hard to tell. A looming shadow blacker than the blackness of space itself, with only the glow of red eyes, white teeth and claws to define the creature. It smiled as it looked down at the pinkish planet below. “An undefended target…I’ve been aching to get my fill of mortals for quite some time now.”

He began to descend towards the planet hungy for the terror he would bring. Suddenly there was a golden flash of light and he was hurled backwards. “You’re breaking the rules again,” a voice echoed. “No direct involvement with mortals.”

The demonic demigod snarled and turned around. He stood facing a glowing figure that looked almost to be made of glass, but for his white glowing eyes and the symmetrical pattern of ribbons that shone down his body. Rage exploded from the black demon like fire and he charged. The other figure took a stance and when they clashed, the silent shockwave sent space dust flying. “Get out of my way you half-baked Protector!” The demon sent a beam of dark energy at the glowing figure who countered with a white burst and said nothing.

It was that silence that really got on his nerves. Besides stating what the demon was doing wrong, the good demi-god never showed any emotional reaction. Just stared at him with those judgmental white eyes. “You can’t stop me this time! I’ll destroy you and get away with my prize!” He tackled his opponent into an asteroid.

The glowing figure merely shrugged and emanated an explosion from his body that sent the demon flying backwards. Again the demon fired a beam of dark energy, but this time the glowing figure flexed his arms. The very fabric of reality seemed to twist around him, and sent the beam flying back. The shadowy demon snarled again. “You aren’t the only one who can do that now! I’ll suck you into a black hole of my own making and be rid of you forever!” He put words to actions and began twisting and tearing the fabric of reality.

The glowing figure shot forward and grabbed close to where his hands were, straining in the opposite direction. They struggled, face to face, nearly touching, eyes locked just as solidly as their energies were in an epic struggle. As the glowing figure began to overpower the demon, the shadow’s expression suddenly shifted from desperate rage to calculated malice. “By the way…I found him.”

The glowing figure gave a start, but then quickly reverted to his usual stoic stare. But that second was enough to confirm the demon’s suspicions. He burst out in maniac laughter. “Don’t believe me do you? Well here’s the facts. His mother is already dead, and he’s been living in an orphanage, but today he ran away. Now…I wonder what might happen to him…all alone. And at such a tender young age too.”

At last he was rewarded with a glare of pure hatred from his opponent. “You…wouldn’t…DARE!”

The demon smiled, “Dare what? Direct involvement? Disembowl him with my own claws? Oh yes I would, but I have you to deal with don’t I?” He could feel the emotions of rage and slight relief pouring off the other being, and with a smile, crushed that hope. “But…I may have let word slip among the lower ranks. I imagine some friends of mine will be dealing with him shortly.”
“Direct involvement…”

“You’d never be able to prove anything. And it’s not like my masters much care. That’s more the rule of your masters.” He smiled. “But I imagine you’d like to see it happen wouldn’t you?” They broke apart and the dark figure waved his hand. A watery window appeared in the midst of the space, showing the planet Mobius, in another quadrant of space. It was night at the present location viewed. And as they watched, the boy in question stepped into view…

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a small gray fox, with purple stripes splattered on diagonal. He couldn’t have been older than four. Yet like all Mobians he had matured rather quickly. Sort of.

He glanced around at the dark street and shivered as he hurried towards a street light. Maybe leaving the orphanage wasn’t such a good idea he thought. He shook his head. No, all he had to do was find a safe place to sleep, and he could look for food tomorrow.

Suddenly he heard a shatter. He spun around. The street lights behind him had all gone out. Something caused him to shudder. He turned and began jogging towards the next street light. After passing it, he saw the ones in front of him pop and fizzle out. He suddenly felt cold. With a whimper he backed up to the one remaining light on the street, cowering under its halo of illumination.

Things seemed to be happening out there in the darkness. Tiny sounds and shifts of shadow strained his eyes and ears to the max. Suddenly there was a whooshing sound and the street light above him blew out. Something seemed VERY close. With a cry of pure terror the little fox bolted. As he ducked into an alleyway, he felt SOMETHING following him. The sound of feet and ragged breath that was nearly a snarl followed him, but when he looked back he saw nothing. That was when he hit the wall. When he opened his eyes again he squeaked in alarm. The alley was a dead end! He looked back the way he’d come and sniffed. Tears blurred his eyes, obscuring the shadowy claws that approached him from behind…

(( Your grammar and punctuation. I want to fix them.

...It must be due to my AP English Literature class I finished. Yep. ))

Well...the night wasn't turning out like she had hoped. Instead of being refreshing and calming, the shadows were creeping the girl out.

"Yeah...maybe this wasn't the best idea. I'm not feeling refreshed at all..."

The girl was a fairly young and pretty she-hog around seventeen years of age. She often acted younger than her age, however.

Currently, she was a brown hedgehog with light brown fur color mixed in. Fairly average. Her eyes were brown as well.

"Doo doo doo...eh, might as well go hom--wait...what's that?"

The girl peeked out from under her grey hooded sweatshirt, blinking. She had seen the lights start to go out...and was that a kid running around?

The girl huffed and shook her head.

"They never, ever learn. Then again, I haven't really been staying on top of things..."

The girl jogged lightly over to the last light, rubbing her hands together. A small smile played at the corners of her mouth.

"Hey, kid! Duck!"

A cord of glowing light appeared in her right palm. She lashed out with her attack, crackles of electricity in the air as the white beam of light shot forward and struck the menacing figure behind the boy.
~~~~~~~
In a hospital miles away from the main plot of the story...
A nurse entered a room--one of many--and checked the patient's vitals. The female ferret sighed, marking things down. Everything was fine, as usual, but the patient was nowhere near waking up.
The patient was accepted as a hedgehog, but the thickness and coarseness of his fur--as well as the rough, predatory look--held a resemblance to a wolf. A hybrid, perhaps.
She looked at the boy. Well--she shouldn't really call him a boy. He was seventeen or eighteen years old. Truly, he was more of a young adult. When he was asleep, he looked younger. His features were rough--from his time with a gang, she supposed--but he was still somewhat handsome.
The nurse moved closer, gently pulling back the bedspread and studying his wounds. They had treated some old bullet wounds and stitched them up. The cuts and torn muscles had healed nicely, the pieces of glass and other substances removed. His body scars were hidden by his surprisingly thick and lush fur.
His fur! It looked like it had been a nice silver once. But the chemical contamination had turned his fur a deep, dark cobalt color. His quills glimmered like the gemstone itself. His chest and stomach fur--as well as his hands, feet, and mouth area--were a lighter shade of cobalt.
Some would say that he was lucky to have turned such a nice color.
The nurse sighed and checked his face and eyes. Dark blue eyes stared listlessly back at her, unresponsive and glazed. She closed them, feeling surprisingly mournful. She hurried through the rest of her duties, suddenly wanting to leave the room as soon as possible. When she had finished the checkup, she straightened and gave the patient one last glance.
"You don't have much time left, dear," she noticed sadly. "It's been two months. And without any extra support or financing...we can't keep supporting you."
With that, the nurse left the room and waved over the doctor that was waiting outside.
"Doctor...it may be time."
(( Tina should probably show up now. ))
(( Settled for the name Joseph David James. He goes by David, though. In the gang they called him Joe; he couldn't stand being called Joe, but the gang made it even worse.
Anyways, his fur color is comparable to the dark parts of these two images. Maybe even darker.
The small fox ducked with a yelp and the lightning sizzled the black arms coming out of the wall. The arms receded with an awful sucking sound. Then there was silence.
He got shakily back to his feet and looked at the light brown she-hog. "Th-thanks miss!" He glanced around the alleyway and scrubbed his hands together in anxiety. Was it gone?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tina snapped awake with a scream. She could still see the black shapes of her dream converging on their victim. The gypsan shook herself to get rid of the feelings and puffed her feathers a little, then climbed out of bed.
She wasn't a native of mobius, rather she resembled a bipedal cat, but with fine light purple feathers instead of fur. Her ears were smaller than a cat's and her tail was adorned with larger display feathers than the rest of her body.
She quickly slipped a simple red tunic on and secured a belt. On the belt she holstered a stun gun. She stepped towards the door of her tent, then paused and pulled a pouch off the shelves and added it the belt. Then she left.
The gypsan was no stranger to danger, certainly not on mobius, or even elsewhere in the galaxy, but something was bothering her tonight. Something was wrong.
She set out across town, bypassing the streets she knew to be frequented by the gangs. It wouldn't do to run into them on a night like this. They'd already begun pressuring her to pay them for her "protection." As if she made enough money fortune-telling to pay for anything!
She was passing the hospital when something else tugged at her enhanced 6th sense. It almost felt like a baseball. A baseball stuck in a pipe. Or somesuch. Psychic sensations were sometimes difficult to describe. She paused, concerned about what had wakened her in the first place. It seemed unlikely the two were connected, and whatever was happening across town seemed very urgent. Yet this also had a sense of urgency. And might be less dangerous.
Finally she made up her mind and entered the hosbital, following the growing whispers in her brain.
"Sure!"
The girl's reply was cheery as she looked down the alleyway, her ears pricked forward with interest. After a minute of silence she grinned.
"Oh, awesome. I must've scared it off."
She then stared at the boy for a few seconds before holding out her right palm. She shook the boy's hand.
"Hi! I'm Cassidy...Cassidy James. That's my real name. I have a lot of nicknames. But now's not the time."
She let go of the fox's hand, stretching.
"So...who are you and what's your story? If you have a family, I can walk you back to your house. If you're an orphan on the run...huh, I guess you can stay at my place for the night and leave in the morning. But that's only if you want to. "
~~~~~~~
The nurse was still giving her report to the doctor as the two of them walked down the hall. They were nearing the front desk of the hospital, since the office where they had to sign paperwork was near there.

The nurse looked sad, but firm in her resolute belief. The doctor looked weary, but he continued his reluctant defense.

"He shows no signs of waking up...doctor, I think-"

"Perhaps if he had family. Or even friends. Interaction often improves the healing process. Let him know he isn't alone."

"Maybe so, but we have no way of knowing. We don't know about the patient--there aren't any records on him. Well...except for a minor criminal record. He served jail time from being in a gang--a month, I believe."

"His name?"

"We don't know for sure. He was called Joe in his gang, but it's possible that it's a false name."

"Hmm."

"We can't keep supporting him. He-"

"He's breathing by himself?"

"Yes...but he's in a vegetative state. Remarkable, he's lost a very small percent of muscle or mass. But his brain activity...barely anything at all."

The doctor sighed as the nurse pressed on.

"Doctor, it's too expensive to keep him on life support. We...we need to pull the plug."

After a long moment of silence, the doctor nodded.

"What room is he?"

"He's in the ICU area. Room fifteen."

"I'll fill out the paperwork now. When I'm done...we'll take care of it."

The boy nodded. "My name is Slants. Or at least...that's what the other kids call me. At the orphanage. They make fun of me. So I ran away. Then the monster came and you scared it off. You said I could stay with you...at least for the night?" He scooted closer and looked up at her eyes. "Will you keep me safe?"

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tina walked down the corridor until she found the room the sensation was emanating from. A hansom blue hedgehog lay beneith the sheets, feeding tubes and the steady beep of a heart monitor showing the intensive care he was in.

After a moment she recognized him as the one gang member that first started hanging around her tent. She took a step back. She didn't need any more attention from those guys. She knew she was going to have to deal with the gang soon or they'd begin pressing their demands. Still...he'd never made any demands of her, and...the threats had actually only begun after the guy vanished...now that she thought about it.

"Hey." She waved her hand over his face. Nothing happened. She looked around but saw no nurse or doctor to ask as to his condition.

"Well...let's see just what happened to you boy..." With a deep breath she closed her eyes and rested the tips of her fingers on his forehead, reaching in and feeling her way through the knot in his consciousness that had drawn her here in the first place...

(I don't know what she'll encounter in his head)

Cassidy sweatdropped in surprise. She lowered her hood, scratching her head lightly.

"Uh...that's a bit demanding, don't you think? I can't promise you that you'll be safe."

However, the girl then smiled and rubbed the little fox's head.

"Heh, but I can promise that I'll do my best to protect you!"

She kneeled down next to the boy, her chin propped on her palm and her elbow propped on her knee.

"Slants, huh? It's not the best name. I bet you could pick one better. How about that? Wait--didn't your mom or dad name you? Or are you too young to remember them?"
~~~~~~~
(( Time for some snippets of what happened. ))
It started off in a bar. The hedgehog was there, looking tired and sitting with a nervous-looking coyote. The coyote had a bottle of beer, but the hedgehog was gloomily stirring a straw around in his cup of water.
"...Gabe, I can't get involved. I feel bad for you, but I'm not getting mixed up in the drug business. You should've known better than to make deals with those kinds of people."
"B-but you gotta help me! J-Joe (here the hedgehog cringed slightly) all I need you to do is...intimidate a few guys..."
The hedgehog shook his head, standing up.
"...I can't. Gabe, you know I never wanted this kind of life in the first place. I want to get out. I don't want to get in deep."
The hedgehog stood, but he tensed when Gabe lunged and grabbed his arm. The coyote had a crazed look of desperation in his eyes.
"I'm willing to do anything. I'll even start following that weird cat-bird girl you hang out with. She's vulner--!"
The hedgehog spun around, slamming Gabe against the wall, his weariness turning into anger.
"Leave her out of this. All of this. She's a good person. People like her shouldn't get involved in our crap lives."
But the hedgehog's actions hadn't gone unnoticed. A bar fight soon broke out...
~
He staggered out of the door, groaning. He held his bruised eye, slumping against the wall outside.
"David, David, David...you need to stop doing this stuff. You need to get back home. C'mon...man up and be a big brother for once."
His ears perked up at the sound of a scuffle. He walked around the building, his eyes widening as he saw a tiger with gloves wrestling with a jaguar with a gun. Before he could move, the tiger spotted him. A grin curled on his lips as he used the jaguar's gun to shoot the hedgehog--David--in the shoulder. David staggered back, pupils shrinking in surprise. The tiger then killed the jaguar.
"Take a good look, boy," he drawled triumphantly. "Because you just killed this man."
~
He'd been running for a while. It was hard to avoid gangs, the police, and these hit men that kept coming after him. But he'd finally done it. Bruised, bleeding, and nearly broken...but he had cornered his prey.
David pointed the gun at the tiger. His eyes were emotionless and his hand was steady.
"You framed me. A supposedly high-and-mighty crime lord like you...framing a kid from the streets. I don't know why you killed that guy. I just want my name cleared."
"That won't happen."
Sirens were heard outside. The tiger snarled as police entered the building. David tiredly placed the gun (empty, by the way) on the ground and kicked it away, raising his hands.
"I called the police before I came here. So...yeah. I think it is possible."
The tiger couldn't contain his fury. He roared and lunged, stealing a gun from a nearby cop. He aimed to kill the hedgehog, whom froze in fear.
Right before he pulled the trigger, the cop rammed into the tiger. Instead of hitting David, the bullet hit some explosive blue chemical material in the warehouse.
An explosion enveloped the silver hedgehog, covering him with the blue liquid. He yelled out in pain before a piece of metal to the head silenced him. He collapsed as the tiger was wrestled to the ground.
"Call an ambulance right now! Right now..."
(( ALSO! I know what the overall plot is...but would it be okay to have some silliness/silly mini-adventures mixed in at times? ))
A bit much to ask indeed. The demon grinned. Safe? I think not boy...
The shook his head. "Don't remember my parents." He sniffed, there were alot of emotions associated with that. Did his parents just drop him off at the orphanage and run off? Were they bad people? Or did something. He did remember his mother's face just a little, and she seemed sad. No one had ever been able to tell him anything.
"A real name? Uhh...I don't know. I never thought about what it would be."
The boy didn't see it, but as they conversed, blackness began to gather at the entrance to the alleyway behind the girl. It was growing into something huge...
(he doesn't have a real name because the author doesn't know aaaaarg!)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tina's mouth curled into a slight smile. So the boy was watching out for her...how sweet. Much like another she once recalled.

She reached deeper into his consciousness. She had to find out if his current state was a physical result of the chemicals, or if there was some block inside his mind that had to be resolved before he could wake. She was rather certain of the latter. Something felt wrong in there. Not that she'd ever reached into his mind before...he'd never paid for her services.

Tina was a psychic, but she didn't advertise it as the ability to look into one's mind. That was quite a violation of privacy to some species standards. Instead she claimed fortune-telling through a glass ball. The ball was actually to hold a customer's attention while she slipped into their mind un-knoticed and gleaned the information necessary to counsel them on what they should do about whatever they'd come to her for. Then she'd announce her counsel as though she were seeing it in a vision. Her advice usually lead her customers strait, so she'd had no complaints yet.

But she hadn't had an overflow of business. Many people were skeptical of fortune-telling, and well they should be she figured. No one could tell the future. But one could guess. And her guess was that it was not time for this...David...Joe...whatever his name was...to die.

Come on...show me what's wrong...

The girl frowned in surprise.

"What, you can't remember anything? There's gotta be something in that head of yours. Oh--wait a second."

The she-hog turned, looking bored and slightly annoyed.

"You're waaaay too noisy," she grumbled, two whips of electricity appearing. She flung them both forward in an X-motion, slicing through the demon with ease.

"Try again tomorrow. You're obviously having a bad night tonight."

(( Funny. Do you want some suggestions? ))
~~~~~~~
(( Hopefully he'll be able to notice her as some sort of presence. That's the only way this'll make sense. ))
Inside his mind, he was in a white room. He lay on his back with his hands folded behind his head on a plain bed. He whistled a tune before stopping, looking up in surprise.
"...Tina? That you?"
He sat up, silver fur (for he was still silver in his mind) glowing slightly in the bright light.
"How did you--oh, nevermind. I'm one of the last people who should be asking 'how.' Anyways..."
The boy frowned and closed his eyes, rubbing the back of his head.
"...How do I say this...um, don't wake me up. Please. At least...not yet. See, I figure...oh, crap. How do I even start...? Maybe I should properly introduce myself."
The hedgehog cleared his throat, doing a small wave while looking around the room.
"Hi Tina. My name's Joseph David James. I like to go by David. I went by Joe in the gang to keep my identity a secret. But I really don't like being called Joe, and the gang made it worse. I had some trouble with alcohol abuse a few months back, but I quit before I got framed for murder. Uh...what else...right. I've got a little sister I want to get back home to."
David sighed and hung his head.
"I, uh...I'm hoping that if the hospital pronounces me--me as Joe--dead, I can go home without worry about getting my sister involved in the gangs. Because the only way to get out of a gang is to die. But if I can die without dying...I'm finally free. I can go home and be a big brother. But...I need your help."
His blue eyes traveled across the room.
"I know you don't know me, and I can't guarantee that you would like me...but, uh...if you help me out, I'll try to help you somehow. Just tell me what you want."
The black mass exploded into a shower of dark stuff like ash that floated around before making a nice dusty covering on the ground. It did not stir again. Out on the street, lights buzzed...then flickered back on.
(yes I would like some help. I'm terrible at name choosing...)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tina mentally jumped out of her skin when David addressed her by name. Her physical body even twitched a little.

She relaxed. I'm listening... As he continued, she whistled mentally. It was impressive that he had the willpower to actually choose to remain in a coma. Still...she did not think this plan was entirely well thought out.

Are you sure that will work? Are you sure that's the best strategy? What will they do with you 'body' once they've pronounced you dead? She wondered if she could help him fake his death somehow. She was a pro at extracting information from someone's mind but...implanting false information? She didn't really have alot of experience with that.

You just seem like a nice guy, and I'd hate for your fake death to turn into a real one. She materialized in the room. I don't want anything from you... She was certain that by this point in her life she was at peace with herself. Maybe. ...Just tell me what I can do to help.

The girl laughed and then grinned. Her canines were sharper than a normal hedgehog's; the light glinted off of them for a moment before she closed her mouth.

"Awesome! Looks like he's gone for the night, at least. C'mon, kid. I'll give you a piggy-back ride if you can think of a name before we reach my house. You don't look too heavy to me."

The girl knelt down again, putting her hood back up.

"Up you go, young fox!"

(( I like the name...Brian. = P ))
~~~~~~~
David grinned a little.
"What they do with every body. Wheel it down to the place where all the dead bodies go. Since I'm a 'loner' with 'no family or friends', my body wouldn't even be sent to the morgue. Still...I'm not sure how to sneak out without the hospital thinking it's missing a body or something. And I bet I'm wearing a hospital gown instead of my clothes...okay, you may be right. I didn't think this through all the way."
Now frowning and in thought, the boy was caught a little off-guard when Tina materialized within his mind. His eyes switched from the right wall to her.
"Oh. Uh, hey there. And...thanks."
He cracked a small grin, showing surprisingly wolf-like teeth.
"Eheh. I'm nice when people give me the chance to be. And...are you sure? There's nothing I can do for you? A favor, some work around your place--nothing at all?"
The boy climbed up and hung on as the girl jogged through the night. "I don't know of any good names!"
She continued to encourage him and at last he got an idea. "There was a kid at the orphanage who never teased me. He always told the others to be nice too before he left. I want to be like him. His name was Ethan."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Tina paced back and forth through the white room in his mind before an idea came to her. Ok I have a plan. If you trust me. He nodded and she walked over to him, putting her fingers against his head. Go back to sleep.

Tina opened her own eyes. She heard footsteps. Quickly she slipped behind a curtain and prayed she wouldn't be heard. The doctor entered. "You're right. It is time to let him go. Look. Even now his heart-rate is fading."

Tina maintained a psychic contact, manually slowing David's heart-rate while trying to move him into a temporary stasis. Faking her own death with this technique was one thing, risking it with someone else's life was another entirely. The doctor and nurse began pulling out the iv and feeding tube, and suddenly the monitor flat-lined. The doctor cursed quietly. "Oh well." He removed the monitor pads and helped the nurse roll him onto a stretcher. "Take care of him. I'll clean up."

Tina fogged the old man's mind for a second, then followed. The nurse. At the appropriate moment, she pulled her weapon and stunned the woman in the back.

A while later, the nurse woke up in the lobby with a foggy memory of finishing her task. The doctor walked in, "Well did you put him away."

"...Yeah...I think so..." She rubbed her eyes.

The doctor smiled sadly, "It's late. Why don't you check out early."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Out in the cold, Tina laid the unconscious hedgehog on the ground, then reach into his mind. In the white room she materialized with a flashlight and flipped it on, flooding the place with light. Wake up! The hedgehog's heart leaped and began beating again. She checked all over for signs of damage and found him as well as she had originally. She tapped his head. Enough of this. It's time for you to return to full consciousness.

"Ethan, huh? I like it! You even look like an Ethan to me."

Cassidy hummed as she jogged down the sidewalk. To be honest, the neighborhood wasn't great...but at least it was free from gang influence. She sighed and kept moving until she was in front of an old government building that was thought to be abandoned.

"Well, here it is."

The she-hog opened the door and locked it shut behind her. She then walked down the dusty hallway to a dead-end wall.

Or so one would think.

The she hog slowly pushed the wall open before pushing it closed again. There were five locks she had to close now.

"See...I guess you can say I'm a lab rat of sorts. My parents were scientists. They performed some sort of brain operation on my brother and I, making it so that we can use our brains almost at the maximum potential. Because of this, we're a lot better for test subjects...in order to keep living here, we have to test their experiments on ourselves. Sometimes they don't work, sometimes they do, and sometimes we get really sick."

She sighed and put the boy down.

"But don't worry...you don't need to worry about that. You can sleep on the couch for now. You want something to drink?"

David jerked up, eyes wide; he then fell back, covering his eyes and breathing out slowly.

"...Okay...okay, don't do that light thing again. I thought I was seeing that death-light at the end of the tunnel or whatever."

He then peeked between his fingers, smiling at her. His blue eyes were soft, deep with relief and sparkling with a newfound spirit--likely from his newfound freedom.

"Really, though. Thank you. What'd you do to the doctor and nurse? And--wait, since when was my arm blue--my hands are blue too?"

David sat up and looked at himself, his ears lowering to the sides of his head as he sweatdropped.

"Wow...this is different...oh, right. The explosion. Guess I'm lucky I came out blue instead of burnt to a crisp."

He chuckled before trying to stand shakily.

"I would offer to walk you home, but we both know I'm the one who needs help walking right now. That...and I'm still in my hospital dress. Classy."

The boy smiled. He knew it would take a while for him to get used to being called Ethan, but it was great to have a name at last.

As Cassidy explained, he shuddered, wondering if HIS parents had used him similarly. "Do you want something to drink?"
He nodded.

Tina leaned back, shocked that she'd woken him completely through both stages. She thought it would take a little longer. She had no flashlight, and they weren't in a white room. They were outside with a brisk breeze blowing.

She quickly withdrew her mind from his as he looked around. She smiled, "Oh they're ok. I just distracted the doc a little. Fooling the nurse was alot harder. After knocking her out, I donned a lab coat and gloves, and finished 'taking care' of you, then transferred the memory into her mind while she slept. The gloves disguised my hands."

As he started to stand, she pulled him back down. "Well I'm not ready to start off just yet either. That's perhaps the second time I've ever implanted a false memory, and on top of everything else I did psychically, I need to rest my mind for a bit, so just give me 5 min to rest."

She leaned back against the wall and gazed at the stars, completely zoning out for a while. "Ok I'm ready now. She rose to her feet and helped him up. "Alright now...which way?"

As they started off, she idly realized that the evil sensation that had waken her was no longer there. Was saving him the only thing she'd been supposed to do that night after all?

Cassidy opened the refrigerator, rummaging around.

"Okay, we have water, milk, apple juice, orange juice, and lemonade. You can have one or a little of all of them. Just don't mix them together--that's not good."

She winked briefly before pouring herself a cup of lemonade.

"And we don't have television...sorry. We do have some books, though. Do you know how to read?"

David leaned against her lightly, trying to support himself as much as he could.

"Eh...let's see...um, down this road here. My house is a mile or two down the road. That abandoned government facility."

He looked up at the stars, smiling.

"Nice night tonight, isn't it? Oh--that means it's late. You should probably stay the night. Y'know...avoid any troublemakers on the street. I can walk you home in the morning."

"I'll uhh...milk please."

He sipped the cup of milk as she continued. "No I can't read...well...I can read small words...like CAT and STOP...and I know my alphabet! A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,G,K,L,N,M,O,P,Q,R,S,T,U,S,V,Q...uhhh...WXYZ!"

Tina held him securely as they walked. "Bah is that fat or muscle weighing you down? Gypsan's aren't renowned for physical strength...not even the males."

They continued walking and he mentioned the time, as well as staying at his place. She gave him a sarcastic "really?" look. At his innocent reaction of surprise she sighed. "That's right...you have a sister or something don't you? When was the last time you saw her? The last time I saw you wandering around my tent was three or four weeks ago."

She thought a moment longer. She could handle herself on the street. Even the worst places in town didn't top some of the spaceports she'd visited as a child. Still, the chivalry was charming.
