I hate to break the flow folks, but we just had another mass shooting in the US. http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/12/us/louisiana-shooting/index.html 19 injured, so far, no confirmation yet of deaths. Just how many more shootings is there going to be? How much more are politicians going to ramble how those that want to hurt us our in countries that some can't find on a map, when we have serious problems going on here? |

Split from Shackside Life because discussion worthy, rules, etc. I don't really have much to say on the matter myself, besides the obvious "It's horrible" most will give you. I've sort of come to expect this sort of thing from America in recent times. Bound to happen sooner or later with guns being so readily available. Yes, I know people are responsible for their actions, not the guns. Not meaning to start some kind of gun debate here. Still, making them harder to get would help some. Probably. -shrug- |

It just saddens and annoys me how our politicians saber rattle about how they want to protect our freedoms and our lives, yet fail to do either as our military is off fighting people we labeled terrorists. I feel that our time as the worlds "police" should(if not already is in the process of) come to a end and we fix the issues we have that is literally exploding here. I would note that terrorism is indeed a very real threat for the U.S. and not something to be mocked as false, but I am inclined to agree that the U.S. should be focusing their resources upon their own issues. The U.S. should in fact retaliate if attacked by terrorists-- although I'm inclined to say that the U.S. really should have done a lot better of a job making certain that this retaliation was against the terrorists and the terrorists alone, regarding 9/11-- but they should avoid doing anything beyond this on a global scale as much as possible. That way, while they would still be able to defend themselves from outside issues, they would also be able to do a more efficient job of stopping issues on their own land. |

I would like to agree and disagree with you. I agree that this is horrible and that...well...it's horrible. I can't say much more than that. However, making guns less readily available may not be the solution. In the past when the U.S. has tried banning things, it gave rise to some pretty distasteful individuals gaining a lot of power. For example, take the events of the Prohibition. Banning alcohol gave rise to the bootleggers and the speakeasies. A lot of unsavory individuals became very wealthy from illegally selling moonshine and other alcoholic beverages. Eventually, Prohibition had to be repealed, because it ended up causing even more problems than before. The same thing can loosely be applied to drugs. Since most drugs are illegal here, people will go to various drug dealers to get what they desire. This makes the distributors and suppliers very wealthy. Basically, what I'm getting at is that if someone wants something badly enough, what is legal or illegal won't stop them. They will find ways to obtain their alcohol, their drugs, or their guns. I'm not sure what kind of black market monopoly would rise up if the stricter gun laws were enforced. In fact, I'm not sure I even want to try to imagine it. Sadly, it comes down to a matter of choice. This person chose to murder others. A gun just happens to be a very convenient and effective weapon. Therefore, the attacker logically selected an appropriate weapon to do what (s)he wanted to do. Monstrous...but true. |

I agree, although I wouldn't necessarily say that it coming down to a matter of choice is sad. As I see it, choice is the one and only source of both good and evil. That it comes down to a matter of choice isn't sad at all; what's sad is that some people choose evil. And to expand on that, if guns become illegal and by some unexpected circumstance the potential black market is actually put down, people who desire to murder will just turn to other weapons. Knives, for example. Are we going to ban kitchen knives when they become the next weapon of choice? And a step further, are we going to ban hands (Quite a gruesome day that would be) when those who would choose evil only have those to commit their acts with? Although, to be fair, I do think guns are a bit too easy to get in the U.S. There should be a little bit more precaution in place, although not enough to force a black market by mistake. It's a matter of degree in caution, with a precarious balance between abuse-able freedom and a state without freedom that is being abused just as much. Somewhere in the middle, there's probably our best bet at a solution. |

I should have been clearer. I think it's sad that someone would choose to kill and/or harm others. As for the rest of what you wrote, I agree with it. However, politics are involved; there's bound to be an inordinate amount of difficulty in any attempt at compromise or action. There always is these days. |

It's okay. I had a feeling what you really meant was more along the lines of what I said in answer, but I just thought I'd check. Politics have always been somewhat of a hassle, unfortunately. It's pretty fair to say that any government will have a lot less ease in accomplishing anything than what you'd expect, if only because the power does technically sit in more hands than those of just one person. |

this is what happens if you let someone like the gunmen have a gun...and if anyone finds this kind of stuff funny, they've got something wrong with them. |
