Sonic and Raven! :3
So what was your first RPG besides Pokemon? Mine was Legend of Legaia for the PS1, and boy am I glad it was. I love the soundtrack, and the battle system adds a twist to the turned based RPG. Not too many people seem to know this gem from what I have gathered, but if you love RPGs seriously try this one out. The storyline is great too btw, I just find the game to be a bit too short. :\

Flying Battery Act 2

My first RPG was Wanderers of Ys III on the Super Nintendo, when I was about six years old in 1991. Unfortunately, I had no clue at the time how RPG games worked. It's very funny looking back on the experience today.

Up until that point I had only played platformers like Super Mario Bros, so that's the way I tried to play it. Instead of gradually grinding for XP to get stronger, I simply tried to get further into the game by running through the levels as fast as possible. I had no idea why I kept dying over and over again and couldn't seem to hurt any of the later monsters fast enough to kill them before they got me.

And to make matters worse, this was the first game I played where I needed to pay attention to the story to know what I was supposed to do. Again, at the time, this was a foreign concept to me. I just ignored what everyone said and simply ran to wherever there was a path in front of me. So I got lost very quickly too on the off-chance I survived monster attacks longer than a few minutes.

Oh yes, and as you can see in the intro your character clearly has a sword...but as soon as you take control his sword mysteriously vanishes. I remembered having the hardest time trying to figure out how to get a sword. Once again, I ran into a new gaming concept: needing to buy things in shops to get them, instead of simply finding them in the game world.

Because of all these things I remembered hating the game and quickly getting tired of it, between all my confusion and quick deaths. Ys III really is a good game though, I just plain didn't understand the RPG genre at the time.

Oh my Gods, i can't even really remember. I think it was either Final Fantasy Mystic Quest when we rented it, or Super Mario RPG. I know I really loved the latter, and I would love to see Square come back and work with Nintendo to make a full fledged sequel. it would kick so much ass I don't think my body would ever be ready.

Diablo II, about when I was in second or third grade. Talk about being tossed in the deep end...

Check out my tumblr, Aggravated Anime-Adoring Australian, where I post all sorts of dumb screencaps and MS Paint edits and generally bitch and moan about stupid otaku shit.

IIRC, my first non-Pokemon RPG was Sonic Chronicles. I think it's also one of the few RPGs I've actually beaten. xD

I'll be there every step of the way...
Technically, it was Quest 64 back in, uh, 1998 I guess.
It's actually a really cool game in my opinion, but it seems like it catches a lot of hate. I think that's because it seemed to ignore some of the things previous RPGs had perfected, and the only depth came from the spell system.
I personally love it, and if a kid had never played an RPG, I would recommend it as a starting point. If it were an adult wanting to try an RPG, though, I'd probably recommend something like Mario RPG instead, because Quest lacks a stat system.
I never played it a whole lot myself, though--I was only three or four while my family was first playing it, so I would usually watch my dad. I really have a lot of nostalgia for the areas in that game.

I object to your claims
Hmm, not sure. I think it might have been one of the Final Fantasy games for the SNES. That, or Breath of Fire.

I'm actually not completely certain. I guess Sonic Battle might count, considering the EXP system for equipping different attacks and moves to Emerl. Other than that and Pokemon Sapphire, I guess the first RPG I've ever really played is Golden Sun. I'm enjoying it, but sort of struggling, haha. I've also played and beaten the GBA versions of Final Fantasy I and II, and I'm a very good chunk of the way through Final Fantasy IV and V for the GBA as well. I've also played Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, but I suppose this one is a bit more iffy as being categorized as an RPG, as with Sonic Battle.

I believe my first RPG was Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention. I clearly remember playing it as a child on one of these SEGA Genesis compilations for the PC. It was great fun, and I still like it to this day. Right now, I'm far too lazy to post a detailed explanation of why and what I like about the game. Maybe I'll edit later.

My first RPG..well, back in my childhood i didn't really play any RPG centered games, i only started getting into them in 2009. So, my first RPG was Paper Mario. Man, it's a great game.
