So sometime last month the game Game Dev Tycoon was released for Mac, Windows, and Linux. The two developers of the game thought it would be a good marketing ploy to not only release the game, but release it for free cracked through a torrent. Of course more people pirated the game rather than buying it, however the cracked version made the player's game company go bankrupt due to piracy. The developers wanted to show pirates that piracy greatly hurts the gaming industry. I think this was a very clever marketing ploy, too bad it backfired in their face a bit. (But that was probably to be expected anyways...) Here's the link to the article, this was written by one of the game's developers. Go ahead and give it a read if you'd like. How do you feel about this subject in video games? http://www.greenheartgames.com/2013/04/2...of-piracy/ |

I don't see how it backfired, they went out of business because of piracy. While probably not what they were trying to do it really made a good example of how it hurts the industry. lol |

I don't see how leading by example and losing thousands is a good marketing ploy, lol. That's like committing suicide after saying how bad it is. Piracy does bankrupt game companies of course and that's what's leading to the "money-hungry" approaches to gaming today, as displayed by features in the next-gen consoles. Page not found, BTW. |

Oh try this link, it's the very first article listed of course. http://www.greenheartgames.com/blog/ I don't think they really thought this one through, but like you both stated it's definitely a good example of a real company going bankrupt. :V At least it might get through to some pirates, but no matter what you do there's always going to be pirates and really nothing will stop them... (Though possibly getting in trouble with the FBI, but I don't really see that being a common thing...) |
