Replacing Sonic? Before anyone's tits go crazy, this is false. They are doing a fan competition for SEGA Raw but the new character is not going to be replacing Sonic. I went ahead and did my research on this ahead of time because I almost believed it but the article just seemed too invalid. BUT.... Being the Sonic fans majority of us are, me falling in the category of "die-hard", how would you feel if SEGA DID replace Sonic as their mascot or abandoned Sonic altogether? Would you be able to still passionately follow SEGA if they did replace him or even give the new mascot a chance? In my opinion, Sonic's a great character. I feel trying to replace him, a large number of fans would revolt against it, leaving SEGA with horrible sales and having to backtrack and ultimately apologize to their fanbase. Most Sonic fans only share spite for their recent blunders in the gimmick world when it came to Sonic. They're pulling themselves from their grave, so they'd be foolish to halt their quest with Sonic back on the rise. |

I would personally stop caring about SEGA, since I am more of a Sonic fan; not a SEGA fan. Anyways, SEGA dropping Sonic would be like Nintedo dropping Mario, wouldn't it? |

Honestly speaking, I don't pay a lot of attention to Sega as it is. xD; If they dropped Sonic, literally the only other game of theirs that I have my eyes on at the moment is Phantasy Star Online 2. But, even then, I'm not a huge fan of MMOs, so Sega would basically have me as one of those 'interested from a distance' people who don't really ever buy the game but look it up and such. |

True, I see myself more as a Sonic fan versus a SEGA fan. So I wouldn't see myself following their further exploits. That also raises a good point because Sonic opens the gateway for Sonic fans to be locked in as SEGA fans. Getting rid of Sonic eliminates millions of fans that they would lose out on. |

So, it would be a bad business strategy. Unless they were trying to get a new mascot that would captivate the next generation in some way; then, the strategy could be seen as business plans for the future... |

I don't know where I'm going.

Sonic is SEGA. They rise and fall together. If Sonic goes, SEGA goes. Nobody is gonna drop him. Even considering that is silly of the company, unless they just didn't want to produce anything anymore. |

As much as Sonic has come too far to not be a mascot, the fanbase is indeed bad... just look at the furries and parodies out on the internet... |

Lacen puts it the best. Getting rid of Sonic is basically SEGA committing suicide. They've just built him up too much. Sony has killed Spyro and Crash Bandicoot but they have a huge market to fall back on. SEGA doesn't have much backbone opposite of Sonic. SEGA making a new mascot would be a way to bring more respect to SEGA's name outside of them solely being known for Sonic. |

There is no way that Sega would have the guts to replace Sonic. The wrath of the fans would be too great. |

Sonic is not irreplaceable, you can't get in that sort of mindset. I believe he is very safe as the mascot of SEGA, he still has a big following, he is in the video game hall of fame, and he's simply iconic and too likable as well as a character that can appeal to a wide range of audiences which is hard to pull off. He hasn't had the best game releases for awhile, but he hasn't been a complete disaster either from a sales standpoint, even when critics say his games are bad, his fan base still buy it to see for themselves and more often than not the games make the buyer happy, Unleashed, Generations, and Chronicles were all enjoyable for me and people really liked Colors... so the belief that he's been some sort of train wreck isn't exactly correct. As long as people like the character and the product it's associated with.. and as long as it makes money, the image is safe. |

I'd really hate it if SEGA made a new mascot, they just wouldn't be able to top Sonic anyway, but if they do replace or get rid of him, then I will probably stop following SEGA, after all, about 90% of SEGA games I play are Sonic games, the rest are just classics like NiGHTS. |

Sonic and Raven! :3
|
It would be a HUGE mistake on Sega's part if they were to replace Sonic. Although the company has some other decent franchises, the first thing that comes to most gamers minds when they hear Sega is Sonic the Hedgehog. Of course I read all about this before so I knew from the get-go that he wasn't being replaced. There's already been some interesting entries so far, I wonder who's will win? Also CWC seemed to have read that false blog entry, and complained about it stating that it's a bad move on Sega's part. :V

How would I feel? Let me be honest. I'm not as much a SEGA fan as I'm a Sonic fan. If SEGA were to replace Sonic, I don't see me having much interested in the company anymore. |
