Good vibes.

Alright, so I know that the Sonic fanbase is possibly the most nit-picky of any fanbase, though also the most loyal and dedicated. I have a question: What was the fanbase like before Sonic 2006? |

I first participated in The Shadow Realm and Sonic Stadium in 2005 so I may be a little late considering your time range. From what I can remember, people didn't seem as strict. Don't take my word for it though as I mainly lingered around the RP section. I remember there were countless fan-characters that included several of the features that are highly frowned upon today - the recolors, elementals, and hybrids for example. I'll admit, I even made fan-characters consisting of the three that I mentioned. The characters gained free access to the RPs nonetheless, meaning there wasn't an approval stamp. |

They were younger in that period but I still imagine they were a lot less worse than the current fanbase (furries, mary-sues, gary-stus etc) |

Honestly, I'm not sure how different it would be, since I never really saw it at that time. Still, a bit of research and knowledge tells me that it likely wasn't all that much better. We had Sonic X before Sonic the Hedgehog '06, and there's been enough ranting and nitpicking about that. We also had the transition from the 2-D era into the 3-D era, which also suffers from a ludicrous amount of nitpicking. Arguably even Sonic Heroes is a bit controversial, if mostly for the fact that the plot was so thin compared to SA and SA2. Shadow the Hedgehog also receives a good deal of ranting for reasons ranging from the guns to the cars to the plot. There's also that debate over whether the original canonity for the Genesis games developed in Japan is better, or whether the North American changes to the manual plot information were an improvement. If anything, we've actually gotten better after Sonic the Hedgehog '06, if only because the three main games we've had since then are generally very good. Still, I suppose that statement only goes so far. I have my fair share of negative opinions regarding the Sonic Unleashed plot; enough so that despite my love for storyline, I'm actually okay with how thin the plot of Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations is. So basically our ranting and complaining was vented elsewhere. I doubt it was astoundingly better or astoundingly worse, to tell the truth. Edited by YamiShadow, Apr 26 2013, 08:20 PM.

Well, I'd imagine that they were less picky and disagreeable than what we saw in 2007-2010. |

Oh dear God, I'm crying. Everything is so true! I joined my first forum in 2004 (Yes...I was 10). I joined SFGHQ to learn a bit more about fan gaming. That was the age I picked up Game Maker 5.3. On that forum, not much was really discussed except for the Sonic fan games being produced by the many members on that board. I do remember, however, that there was a lot of crying about Sonic Heroes. They always referred to it as the worst Sonic game ever produced. Every game after that (Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Riders), there were complaints tossed out left and right. The only games that they really appreciated were Sonic Rush and the Sonic Advance series. This was mostly due to the fact that they were 2D games. Surprised at this reaction? Uh, no. All the fans cry about not going back to the classics. It's crazy to think back to that time. Adventure and Adventure 2, and their respective ports, were on the rage. Everybody loved those games. Talking ill about them was taboo, and a one-way ticket to a flame session. It was ludicrous . The only difference that there is now is that there are more people complaining simply because they notice other people complain. I really hate it. Most of the fan base is so unappreciative towards the attempts and risks Sonic Team take. It's getting better though. It's been described by many reviews that 2010 was somewhat of a "Sonic Renaissance". Titles like Sonic Colors, Sonic the Hedgehog 4:Episode I, and Sonic & SEGA All-Star Racing really stepped it up, and now the titles only get better and better. Eventually, the fan base will settle down and enjoy a game for once. |

Gods, I never was a major internet surfer until my High School years, and even then I hardly knew. Though there did seem like a form of radicalism took hold as fans started to go further and further back to when the Sonic games started to go wrong and their suggestions becoming more and more stripped of all current themes and stuff used in games now. |

Although I didn't join the Sonic Scene until late 2008, I did lurk on Sonic Retro for some time before that. Everyone seemed to be a bit peaceful, and reading older topics on Retro really the only issue they had back in the day was members who claimed to know a lot about hacking, and would post non stop saying they ported levels when it was very difficult to do so back in the day. It's really sad to see the community being talked down to other people on the internet who don't care for Sonic, because not all of us complain.

Well, from what I know, the fanbase was a little mixed about Heroes and Sonic X, and greatly disliked Shadow the Hedgehog. I don't think it was until somewhere in the Shadow/06 point where the fanbase really got it's terrible reputation. I was too young to be participating in forums, but this is what I've been able to put together based off of what I've read around the internet. |
|
It all starts with this... A jewel containing the ultimate power! Every world has its end. I know that's kinda sad, but... That's why we gotta live life to the fullest in the time we have. At least, that's what I figure. -Sonic the Hedgehog | |

Well at the time I didn't really check out the fanbase but I can imagine it to still be quite nitpicky - but not as much. |

I didn't read forums back then, so I wouldn't know, but it probably wasn't as bad as it was from 2005 to around 2007-2008. Maybe even to 2009. I'm not really sure. |

I will say the Sonic fanbase was rather whiny in 2008 when I first joined, so yes it was somewhat bad in 2009, 2010 is where things started to slowly die down from what I could remember.
