Microsoft has confirmed that yes, they will reveal the next generation console on May 21st. They sent out preliminary invites to press today saying, "A New Generation Revealed" will occur at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time at the Xbox Campus in Redmond, Washington. They are using the hashtag #XboxReveal. Major Nelson posted about the event saying Microsoft will, "continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games." The event will be livestreamed exclusively on Spike TV in the US and Canada and online at GameTrailers.com and on Xbox Live, and will be fully accessible on tablets and smartphones. The event will be hosted by GTTV's Geoff Keighley and will have various members of Microsoft's team and 3rd party developers on hand to show the upcoming lineup of games for Xbox. |

I hope that this conference will finally confirm or disprove the following rumor: The new Xbox won't play used games, or will require you to pay a fee to play used games. If that is true, then nothing else that is said matters. I won't buy the new Xbox, even though the 360 is my favorite console this generation. I simply can't justify spending $60 on every game I buy. 90% of my games are used. If both Sony and Microsoft do this, I'm going back to PC gaming. PCs don't allow used games either, but they also have many of their own unique benefits that consoles don't have. |

Adding onto that, I'm hoping that Microsoft really isn't considering online-only for the next system, but it appears it's already leaning to that. |

I'm likely to stay off buying the newest Xbox. After the bullshit with the 360, I'm gonna stick to Playstation and Nintendo from here on out. Not like 360 is going to have much other than FPS games(And Gears of War) anyway, and chances of Rareware ever working on any new Banjo or other games are unlikely. |

Adding onto that, I'm hoping that Microsoft really isn't considering online-only for the next system, but it appears it's already leaning to that. That's another thing. What happens when they turn off the servers a decade or so after the system is released? The system instantly becomes a very expensive brick and everything you bought for it becomes useless? That's going to completely kill the retro gaming scene decades down the road too. This just boggles my mind. I have an old NES, SNES, etc. and they all still work perfectly over two decades later. As long as they stay in good repair, I can continue to use them as long as I want, despite them being very quaint and old fashioned today. But now we potentially have all these new systems where the system's death could be programmed into it when the company no longer deems it profitable. Edited by Nail Strafer, Apr 29 2013, 03:31 AM.

They'd be absolutely ridiculous to not have backwards compatibility now that PS4 doesn't. That would definitely make them ahead of Sony and still be able to get revenue for their 360 games. Also, online-only would again be a terrible idea because they'd be losing even more revenue for people who refuse to pay for the online service or don't have home-internet set up. For companies so revenue-driven, they certainly aren't trying to corner the market. |

As people have said above, if the new console voids playing used games, then I probably won't even buy it, as most games I buy are used and it's a silly idea in general. Other than that, I'm not too interested in the new console, as I haven't been playing many games as of late, but I will still get it at some point. |

Little bit of news regarding the name. The next Xbox will be called the Xbox Infinity, if a piccy of an allegedly leaked logo is to be believed. Or perhaps it’ll just be plain Xbox, as a separate, equally unofficial, just as questionable logo suggests. The Xbox Infinity - not actually a name, just the word XBOX with an infinity symbol superscript - and the tagline “Infinite entertainment. Infinite possibilities” appeared on Reddit late last week. There’s a wee trademark symbol, ™, on there too, though a check of the US Patent and Trademarks Office database doesn’t list any "Xbox Infinity" trademarks granted - or with the infinity symbol, so far as we can see. ![]() The second "leak" - according to Forbes magazine made via a Twitter account, though the social network responded with ‘User not found’ when we tried it this morning - simply uses present’s the console’s basic name in lower case with a new ‘x’ logo. Unlike the infinity image, this one is a photo of a presentation slide or poster. For what it’s worth, there’s no trademark symbol attached. ![]() Microsoft has already said it will unveil the next-generation Xbox on 21 May, so we have less than a month to find out how what was once talked about as the "Xbox Next" or the "Xbox 720" will actually come to market. That rumoured name never seemed likely, but the two latest suggestions both sound plausible - though they can’t both be right, surely? Perhaps Microsoft itself doesn’t yet know and is punting options out onto social networks to see which of the pole-hoisted flags most people salute. |

The Xbox Infinity was brought up in Wentos' post about the upcoming new Sonic game, so it could likely be the final name for the console. I would be disappointed if Microsoft kept using numbers in their console names (i'm already upset with Sony using numbers for their consoles, it's getting really stale IMO.) so the name Infinity would be cool. Also if the console can't play used games like the rumor states, and has to stay online in order to be able to play, I won't be getting it. Also backwards compatibility needs to be a must, because if I do end up getting the console and my 360 stops working I would want to play my 360 games on said new console. (That's the main reason why I don't care for Sony anymore...) Well I guess we have to be patient and watch the reveal on the 21st then.

Dude you can just keep your 360... If it stops working which is a problem that has plagued the 360 since it came out, you could still find a used one that works. I'm keeping my PS3 once the PS4 comes out even though I probably won't use it much if ever. I don't get all of these backwards compatibility people. How much have you actually used it? When I got a PS2 I tried a few of my PS1 games at the beginning but only to test it out and see how they looked. After that I was too busy playing PS2 games to care. I think it's more of a psychological thing than anything. There are some that may actually use it a lot but I'm willing to bet the majority don't. As for the next Xbox I hope for Microsoft's sake they aren't trying to push Windows 8 with it. Rumors are suggesting it's OS is based on Windows 8. Considering how the 360 has been running out of steam for the past few years and focusing only on aps and casual kinect games it seems likely the next Xbox will be less focused on games as well. I read a rumor that they were actually considering a version that didn't play games. Just the fact that they were considering it shows how much they care about multimedia over games. Steve Ballmer in early 2011(around the same time the 360 really started losing steam) even said, "Xbox isn't a gaming console. Xbox is a family entertainment center. It's a place to socialize. It's a place to watch TV. We have Hulu coming. It's the only system where you are the controller. Your voice, your gestures, your body." They should just focus on games. Speaking of games I also read that they were struggling internally with game development and had to cancel games because they weren't turning out well. Which in turn has forced them to write big checks to secure 3rd party exclusives. Doesn't sound good. Anyway we'll see at their reveal what they have but with how Microsoft has been since 2011 I really don't care. I wish they'd leave the console market and Sega would come back because they could make a way better game console but that will never happen. |

If rumors are to be believed they are 6 months behind schedule on the development of software. Yeah, another bump in the road if true. |

Oh lord. If this whole thing about the system having to be online to play games is true, then I don't see Microsoft lasting this generation. |
