 Unleashed has the greatest ending in the history of any Sonic game, without a shadow of a doubt. It makes you feel sad and triumphant at the same time, for losing Chip, but for also defeating Dark Gaia. I can't get enough of Proffesor Pickle's speech about light and darkness, Amy being right about how Sonic will always be there to save the world, and Sonic putting on the bracelet. I feel really sad about how close Sonic and Chip got to each other. The music is what seals the deal for me though. It feels incredibly cinematic, and I love hearing Endless Possibility play as Sonic and Tails set off for Adventure. Then we hear "Dear my Friend", which recently made me shed a tear. That song really makes you draw parallels to real life. As a nice bonus, the credits are made entertaining, as you get to see photos of Sonic, Chip, and Tails' journey around the world.

All in all, beautiful stuff.

 Well it's a tough one but I gotta say Sonic 2. :D Your falling from the sky, going to die, when your by best friend comes by (hey all that rhymed!) to save your behind! ;) The beautiful music, the little slideshow thingy of Tails getting the Tornado, it's just so... magical. It always annoyed me that Tails never got a slideshow of Sonic getting the Tornado though (how can someone fall for that long?) -_- .... eh, I'll let it slide, it's just too perfect. The track is also one of my favourites in ANY Sonic game. I also love the lyrical version Sweet Dream or Sweet Sweet Sweet as the Japanese version is called, the original though :idea: NOT the crummy 06' remix. T_T

 I'm going to go ahead and just say Sonic & Knuckles for the Genesis, partly because it was something I grew up with.

The game itself built up this colorful and vibrant world with its own history and sort-of a story as you played through. I remember I would look at the backgrounds of this game as I was playing and note that it was a whole massive world back there so it was something more than just merely a 2-d scroller to me.

The game progressed with a bit of story, granted it was Robotnik being naughty again and you sorting him out to restore order, but the world this game created did it for me. The ending was free of cliff hangers and did not rely on overly impressive graphics to "show" you the ending but rather a few simple cutscenes that wrapped the whole story up neatly and left just enough to your imagination to want more.

But as a mash-up, Sonic Adventure 2 was emotional and pretty epic with Super Sonic and Super Shadow evoking double Chaos Control to save the world. Shadow sacrificing himself to save the planet and then the emotional responses as Sonic returns by himself. Plus the final boss was pretty cool, gave a slight sense of panic, great music, great scenario, just awesome.
Blaire certainly hit the nail on the head with the Generations description which I think might be my second favourite ending, but I agree completely with the above quote.

Sonic Adventure 2, even though I used to only play it for the sake of Chao Garden. The ending was pretty awesome.
