(( Thank you! I really like what you added. ^^ ))

Kodokuna looked at Ketsueki in surprise, narrowing her eyes and tilting her head in mild confusion.

"I...I guess that makes sense. You mean tradition as in it could happen and there are laws for it, but not in the sense that it happens often. I can get that. But I doubt the others would let me take over. Likely, an older member would challenge me. Or they'd try to kill me in my sleep or something. Neko-Oni are allowed to overthrow their leader if a majority wishes for it to happen. We're temperamental demons."

She frowned when the Inu-Oni said his bit about Osamu's philosophy regarding power.

"I know that. But I don't want to rule the Neko-Oni Tribe. I just want respect, and they still wouldn't respect me if I won against Osamu. I've pretty much given up on those idiots.

"But...you're right. There's a battle between us now. And I intend to finish it--as the victor. Still...I know he and my former Tribe are more than willing to kill me. The Inu-Oni Tribe, too. But I'm not sure whether I should kill them."

The Neko-Oni stared at the moon for a long while, the light reflecting and increasing the luminosity of her eyes. She flicked her tail once before it lay still again. She didn't know it, but this was when Ketsueki had begun staring at her.

Osamu...I stopped thinking of you as my father long ago. You were my leader, but now you're not only that. Are you my enemy, now? Does one of us need to be destroyed in order to end the conflict?

And my old tribe-mates...will you send them to kill me? Will I need to kill them in order to protect myself? I don't desire that. Even Toraneko...even with her, I wouldn't kill her. I just want you all to leave me alone now. I want to sever my ties.

And my mother...Kyarako. Is she still alive? I doubt it. But if she was...if she was, could I find her? Is there a way to find out what happened to her?

Kodokuna was so busy immersing herself in her thoughts that she didn't notice Ketsueki's face getting redder and redder. At his question (and his uncertain tone), she scowled lightly, showing her fangs. She closed her eyes, her ears and her tail also showing her annoyance.

"Of course I'm sure. I wouldn't suggest it if I wasn't sure about it."

Even despite having offered him the same service, her eyes opened, showing confusion and a bit of hesitation. She looked off to the side, her fangs sliding out over her lips as she pouted, looking a tiny bit uncomfortable.

"Oh. Er...yeah. Sure. That'd be nice."

After muttering those words, she finally glanced over at the Inu-Oni. Her eyes widened as she saw him blushing so much that the lines on his face were glowing a bright red. She stared for a few seconds, initially puzzled.

"Hey. Your face is glowing. And why are you blushing? I--!"

As the pieces clicked into place, her expression suddenly turned angry, a furious flush on her face as the blood rose in her cheeks.

"I didn't mean it like that!" Her voice was defensive and frustrated. "You're making it into more than it really is!"

She stood suddenly, hissing softly in pain as her feet made contact with the ground. Even despite her shudder, she started walking briskly towards the river. Every step felt like red-hot needles sinking into her swollen flesh, but she continued at the same pace regardless.

"Are you coming or what?!" the Neko-Oni demanded, not bothering to turn around. She couldn't get the flush to fade from her cheeks, and it annoyed her to no end.

(( Very welcome. x3 Also... Unless you want to include the bath itself, I think we can stop after my reply. You're to be starting the next episode, after all. ; P ))

Ketsueki nodded in acknowledgement when she accepted his offer. He was feeling much to embarrassed at this point to speak.

At this point, she seemed to finally make note of his blushing. When she realized why, the markings on his cheeks glowed a bit brighter, for lack of any other way that the blush could become more apparent.

I know you didn't! But I haven't done anything like this with anyone, even with you not meaning anything more than what you said.

"O-Okay," he managed, when she asked whether or not he was going to come along.

He stood up slowly, then began to walk after her. Ketsueki caught himself looking at her again, then glanced away. Her feet must really hurt. Kodo's really stubborn, walking like that without even flinching.

Being up on his feet and doing something rather than just being left to think and talk brought down his blush a bit. He decided he'd try to make a little bit of conversation on their way to the river, to take his mind off of things.

"So... do you like fish better cooked or raw?"

His speaking was steady again. That was something, at least. Maybe he'd be better by the time they reached the river.

But when we reach the water, we'll have to take off our clothes, and... He quickly diverted his eyes from Kodo again, and shook his head quickly. He closed his eyes with a frown. The blush came back a bit, despite his best efforts. No. Stop. You're here because she needed a friend. A friend!

Ketsueki took a deep breath and let it go slowly. He opened his eyes again, and stretched out his arms, flinching slightly at the pain of the burn on his backs. His legs were a bit more numbing since the walking was constant, and his feet... They weren't as bad as Kodo's, anyways.

He had to wonder... Why did it take so much for her to feel pain? It was a bit strange.

"Hey, Kodo... How were you able to fall off a mountain and get up again so easily? You're a demon, so obviously it'd hurt less than it would for a mortal, but that was pretty impressive."

There was a lot about Kodo that he didn't know yet, he realized. Especially after hearing about the power that she'd inherited from her mother's bloodline, that was undeniable. He, on the other hand, was rather straightforward. Kodo knew most everything there was to know about him.

All he really had that he would rather not talk about was the way he'd chosen to help Higeki. Not out of shame, but because it was too sad of a memory for him to talk about. He'd tried but failed, and now he was forced to live with that. He didn't want to share that with anyone, but he didn't really have a good way to explain why.

He stopped when they reached the river again. He stared into the water, then briefly glanced at Kodo, realizing again what it meant for their arrival. He did his best to keep his blush to a minimum and braced himself for what was to come.

Ketsueki told himself he wouldn't look, but he was aggravated by the knowledge that he probably would. No matter how many times he'd told himself not to while they were walking, he'd ended up looking anyways. He really hoped he would figure out a way to avoid doing so.

(( No rush! We'll end it soon enough. = P ))

By the time Kodokuna reached the bank of the river, she felt like screaming. Her feet were absolutely killing her, and they had started bleeding again. The more they hurt, the angrier she felt.

Stupid d*** Inu-Oni Tribe...stupid d*** wood...stupid d*** fire...

She was too angry to look at Ketsueki at that moment. She huffed, crossing her arms as she continued to pout in frustration.

"I've never eaten fish cooked. I think it tastes pretty good raw, though. Why? Do you prefer it cooked or something?"

If he replied, she didn't notice. She was still fuming from how much she hurt. Did the Inu-Oni really have to try to burn them? And she hated fire! She never wanted to see fire again--not for the rest of her life.

Kodokuna shrugged half-heartedly at Ketsueki's next question. Part of it was still due to her leftover anger, but part of it was due to the fact that she really didn't know the answer.

"I don't know," she huffed, still sounding annoyed. "I guess it's because I got angry. See, when I get angry, I kind of forget that I'm hurt. Don't bother asking me how that works, or why it happens, because I don't know."

She then grinned at the Inu-Oni behind her, but it wasn't the least bit friendly. It was more of a snide grin.

"And it isn't because I'm too dense to feel pain."

With that tiny snub, Kodokuna continued her march, moving directly into the river with her clothes still on. Once she was in the water, she started to remove her garments.

First, she removed the baggy pants made of animal skin, tossing it onto the riverbank. Luckily her lower body couldn't be seen in the river.

However, her upper body was a different story. She removed the straps holding her hard leather armor-top together a bit carelessly, causing it to plop into the water. The Neko-Oni quickly retrieved it, but then she tossed it onto the bank beside her pants. As she did so, her breasts became visible for a moment, before she sunk back into the water, her breasts mostly submerged once again.

Kodokuna waited a few minutes before glancing over. She saw that Ketsueki was in the water by now.

Good. But he's still got that stupid blush on his face. There's no reason for it...

Still scowling somewhat, the Neko-Oni half-swam over to the Inu-Oni. There was a moment of staring and an awkward, uncomfortable silence.

"Well?"

Her voice was very aggravated and snippy. Her scowl deepened another fraction.

"Are you gonna stand there gawking at me or are you gonna turn around so I can lick the wounds on your back? Because I still have standards--I'm not going to lick all of your wounds, Ketsueki. And the sooner we get this over with, the better."

There was a light flush on the Neko-Oni's cheeks. Making this situation any more awkward than it already was could cause Kodokuna's temper to boil over.

(( True. ; P ))

Ketsueki hadn't replied to her answer regarding fish, since his thoughts had moved on from that by then. His next question was more so on his mind already.

His ears perked slightly when she began to explain why she didn't feel pain so much as others. It actually made a lot of sense, the more he thought about it. I see. So it's sort of like how I managed push Ran'nā off of me without killing him, despite how normally I wouldn't be able to manage such a feat.

He grinned in answer to her snide grin, although his was more amused. "I was wrong. You aren't dense. You're Hot-headed."

He hesitated briefly, but then he followed Kodo's example and went into the river with his garments on. He began to undo his shirt, but found found that he was more interested in the sudden appearance of Kodo's pants upon the bank than the removal of the top segment of his kimono. He blushed a bit more, then quickly turned his thoughts away from that.

Rather than put his shirt on the bank as she had with her pants, Ketsueki draped his against a rock in the water, so all the blood and such could soak out of it, without it drifting off down stream.

He began to pull off his pants, but again he found that he was glancing at Kodo. Unexpectedly, she had just dropped her shirt, and was reaching down to grab it. Ketsueki had a briefly clear view of her breasts, much to his surprise.

He quickly stepped down further into the river, so that the water would cover him from the waist down, before completely removing his pants. His markings were glowing brightly enough that he could see the glow himself, now.

He had to lean up out of the water briefly to set his pants against the same rock, but he darted back down into the water even more quickly than he'd originally stepped down into it.

When he glanced back at Kodo, she was looking at him. Ack. Did she..? The blush is already enough to tell her, but... He shrugged down his shoulders a bit, feeling a bit awkward.

Her sudden speaking made him jump a bit, and he cringed at the snippy-ness in her tone. Normally he wouldn't have reacted so frailly, but right now he wasn't quite as he usually felt.

"O-okay," he managed, before turning around.

He laughed a bit when Kodo added the bit about her having standards. He guessed provoking her temper wouldn't really be smart, but the laugh had come unbidden and it would likely already provoke her temper, so he thought he might as well talk.

"Standards? You? You'd think you would have killed me and found another travelling partner by now, if you had any standards. And before you say anything about me not having any standards, I'd remind you that I never said I had any."

He stood idly, equally expecting her to begin licking and to suddenly lash out and attack him, somewhat unconcerned with either option. With how much she'd exerted herself for that escape, he was pretty confident that he could take whatever she threw.

... As an afterthought, he set his legs a bit closer together, so she wouldn't be able to kick up between them from behind him. He'd seen her fight, so he thought that might be a wise move, especially at this moment.

The Neko-Oni snarled softly, clenching her right hand into a tight fist. Her entire arm trembled with the might of her sudden fury.

"You...you...!!!"

She raised her fist, preparing to smash it down on top of the Inu-Oni's head. However, just as she reached the peak of her attack, she hesitated. She felt indecisive; did she really want to start a fight? The Neko-Oni didn't feel like increasing her bodily damage.

Slowly, she thumped her fist on the dog demon's head. He would feel her fist between his ears, but her 'attack' lacked the power to be truly painful.

Kodokuna had her eyes closed, her right eye twitching every few seconds. Her fangs were bared in a snarl, all of her teeth showing. She kept her fist pressed firmly against Ketsueki's head.

"...Shut up, baka. I can easily clean my own wounds."

That was all she said. There were no other insults or threats.

Slowly, the Neko-Oni placed her clawed hands on Ketsueki's shoulders. She leaned forward, running her tongue across the burns on his back. Her tongue was a bit rough, and it initially opened up some of his scabs and made them bleed. She felt him wince.

"Don't move. It'll make it worse."

When his wounds were open and bleeding, the cat demon made a face at how awful they looked. She splashed some water against his bleeding areas until they were cleaner. She began to lick again, making the areas feel inflamed until they finally cooled and actually started to feel better.

"So? Better now?"

Her voice was softer now, all traces of annoyance or anger gone.

(( You can end it next post, okay? ))

(( Okay. ^^ ))

The light thump hadn't been what he was expecting at all, but he certainly wasn't going to complain about not being wounded. He chuckled softly at the words which accompanied the thump. She was aggravated, but clearly she wasn't up for bickering.

"Not unless you have a snake for a spine. There's no way you'll be able to lick your lower back, and a bit further down from there is also rather out of reach, along with a little bit on the back of your legs. You're not getting out of this that easily."

He did indeed wince when she began to lick, and he caught himself before letting forth a few words that Kodo seemed to use fairly easily. He'd rather show less signs of pain anyways. Maybe he was just being stubborn, when he thought about that.

Either that, or he was trying to show off. Why on earth would I be trying to show off right now?

By how she seemed to have stopped licking for a moment, he bet she was grimacing at how his wounds looked. Ketsueki was a demon, so he would likely heal quick enough, but it certainly hurt a lot.

The water was soothing. The licking made him wince again initially, but eventually he started to relax.

"... Mm? Oh, yes. Better."

He turned around to face her, a playful twinkle in his eye. "Your turn, now. And believe me, I'll be much more thorough. It isn't just your back that's burnt."

A wide grin spread across his face as his blush reached the point where the markings on his cheeks were just glowing again. He was going to have a lot of fun with this.

He stepped around behind Kodo quickly, after stealing a very obvious glance in the direction of her breasts, almost for the sole purpose of aggravating her.

Ketsueki set his hands on her shoulders as she had done with him, then began licking at her lower back roughly. He repeated her method of washing off the blood before licking for soothing the wound, then removed his hands from her shoulders.

The brief pause in which he didn't touch her probably caused Kodo to think he was stopping, despite what he said, but then his grin returned and his blush grew further. He ducked down under the water, setting his hands about on Kodo's waist, and continued his work down a bit lower. He almost thought he could hear her swearing.

Episode 3: Growing Pains
It came back to her in her dreams. How quiet the night was as the two of them stood in the river and licked each other's wounds. The peaceful serenity of the sound of water lapping against the rocks. The gentle glow of the moonlight on the leaves of the trees and the grass. The cool, soothing relief that the waters of the river brought to her burns and her wounds. The faint breeze that felt so nice against her face and bare skin.

...

The way Ketsueki kept annoying her with his laughter, his looks, his blush, and his words. The way he made fun of her and taunted her. As if he was any better! He was such a soft-hearted, ignorant, awful idiot. And the fact that his disgusting Inu-Oni hands were touching her...and he was LOOKING at her...how DARE he!

Kodokuna growled in her sleep, her nails digging into the tree bark. She slept on a tree branch during the night, not wanting to sleep on the ground. If she'd slept on the ground, she'd be on the same level as that mangy mutt. And there was no WAY she'd sink that low.

The girl soon woke up fully from her sleep, clawing several long strips of bark from the tree branch. Like most other mornings, she woke up fully annoyed and ready to fight. It was the way she was used to living, after all. If any of her habits did happen to change, they never changed easily.

That's not a dream, the Neko-Oni snarled inside her head. That's a f***ing NIGHTMARE. And I had to live through it! ARRRRGH!

Kodokuna huffed angrily, alternating between growling and hissing in anger. When she tired of doing that, she slumped grumpily against the branch and listened to the birds chirping.

...Dumb birds, she thought half-heartedly. Really, she wouldn't mind eating a few for a morning snack, but...she didn't feel like chasing after them. Maybe she'd try later. If she was lucky, she would find some bird demons to eat. They were bigger and tastier than regular birds anyways. More filling, too.

The Neko-Oni glanced down at the ground, a grouchy frown on her face. Her frown deepened when she spotted the Inu-Oni sleeping peacefully below. The sight made the cat demon's blood boil.

He looks so innocent...argh, I can't STAND him!

Kodokuna lept nimbly from the tree, wincing slightly as her feet hit the ground. She walked over to Ketsueki and stood above him for a few moments before swinging her leg back and kicking him. She watched with satisfaction as he went flying a short distance.

"Get up, you filthy mutt. It's time to go."

Silence was all that welcomed Ketsueki in his sleep that night. It was a welcome silence though, with how Kodo had been ever since their escape from his tribe. It was just beginning to sink in and help him truly relax, but even in his sleep he knew that it wouldn't last.

Then, suddenly, he was awake and flying, and it hurt. Ketsueki growled in pain, and then groaned when he collided with the ground.

"Are you still angry, then? You're pretty much beating a dead horse, here. Or, a dead dog, soon enough. I already said that nothing's going to come of that." He grinned slightly, letting a bit of obnoxiousness slip through. "Or maybe that's why you're mad. Maybe you want something to come of that."

He closed his eyes then and shook his head. Kestueki slowly rose to his feet, then stretched. He was careful to cover his grimace from the pain of being kicked.

"Right then. What exactly is the plan again? Travel, and such? We should probably get started soon. At least, that's the impression I get when someone tries to drive out my organs with their foot."

I would guess I'll be having a bruise for at least a day, if how my stomach feels is anything much to go by. He sighed. "No; that was harsh. I'm sure you were trying to kill me quickly."

When did I get so sarcastic with her? He supposed he'd been like this very briefly when they first met, but he hadn't done anything like it in a while. After a bit of thought, he concluded that it must have been all the violent awakenings.

Just leaving crossed his mind, not for the first time, but he reminded himself that he was here because she needed some sort of help. He wouldn't leave. But that didn't mean he'd hold his tongue if she provoked him.

He stood, waiting. He would have started off on their journey immediately, but Kodo was the one who knew where they were going. That assumes there's a destination, though. Maybe she's just roaming. Finding something to eat crossed his mind, but he wouldn't have the patience to share right now if he found food, and he didn't think he could take another beating depending on how desperate Kodo was to eat.

The birds, though... They sounded a tempting meal. He kept his ears very still, because their twitching would have revealed his hunger.

(( This should work! I'm slightly short on time now, though. ^^; If it's at all lacking, let me know, and I'll try to expand it. ))
