Blaire, personally, I'm just not sure what to talk about. Not trying to use 'lack of news' as an excuse, but I just have no idea what to re-visit.
Really Fen? ;P There's nothing at all you could think to talk about regarding the Sonic franchise? Storylines? Voice acting? Comparing official artwork of the different eras? Don't you have any theories about the series mythos?

And the other sections need some love to. Aren't there others games you'd like to talk about? Hobbies? What you look for in a movie? You're a writer aren't you? Talk about writing, or something like that.

To be fair, Fenroar has an awesome story he's writing, but I'm the only one who's commented in the thread. = /

Oh yeah, I was supposed to do that... eh heh heh. I'M A BUSY KITTY--

Uhm anyways, I agree with Blair 200%. There is TONS of stuff we can all talk about, but people would honestly rather talk about random stuff (AND stuff that would easily fit into other topics) in the Shack. The Shack is like a bad apple dudes, let's just cut it from the tree.

Just because they can does not necessarily mean people will want to.

I've said this before but I've discussed plenty of stuff Sonic wise and most of the time I don't really feel like revisiting old topics. As for the rest, I simply don't have enough interest in it to discuss it at length. I've got a lot of interests and I'm liable to hop between them a lot so Sonic isn't always at the forefront for me.

It's great that some of you can be so focused on the subject material that the forum was founded on, but you've gotta understand that not everyone thinks that way. It takes all kinds to make up a community and some of those kinds want to talk about other stuff.

On the subject of the Shack, now that I've read through this thread properly I can say those of you against it are making a bigger deal out of it than you need to be. Most of the issues you've stated have been drastically reduced since the Shackside 'upgrade'. Light roleplaying was an issue with the last incarnation of the Shack (though admittedly a small one. anything that got too serious in that department was promptly shoved out into the RP Garden by the residents of the Shack themselves) and I hardly see any posts that constitute as spam. It's a thread for chit chat ala IMs, and I usually see more substantial conversation in there than I do with my IM contacts.

If too much discussion that could be happening elsewhere is happening in there, then you need to get some areas for it to go in. I know there's specific forums for things, but some other more topical general discussion threads would help. I've made mention of these before with the 'hubs' Shift alluded to.

Should we ever get some things like that going I'll personally make sure people in the Shack start using them and move posts to the appropriate threads. Shouldn't be too hard considering how slow it is nowadays.

Just to expand a bit on what Ludi's said regarding Sonic discussion, I would add that in my case it's that the discussion needs to be engaging. A thread titled "Who's your favourite character?/Do you have multiple favourite characters?/Most Frustrating levels?" will only get so much out of me. I might post once or twice and then lose interest, because once the discussion goes stale it becomes more spam-like than a general discussion thread to my eyes.

In contrast, a thread like the "Bad Gameplay Mechanics" one is one that can actually hold my interest for a while. Granted, I prefer discussing storyline and so a storyline discussion thread would hold my interest for longer, but I find it actually interesting to talk about the gameplay. It feels more like a discussion than if I were to simply state characters I like or levels that frustrated me, to put it simply.

Yeah, I agree that some topics can be a bit more engaging. I for instance could discuss the storyline and the role of the characters all day, but mentioning my favorite stages can only go so far.

I'd just like to say that I'm not complaining or trying to make a big deal or fuss. Like I said last night in the actual Shack "If it goes, whatever. If it stays, whatever." I'm just trying to add my two cents, that's all.

I still can't use this.

This topic demonstrates the problem I have literally always had with the Shack and Casino in general ever since I signed up here: people are going to come for the spam and chatter and not actual forum discussion, the latter of which being the reason a forum exists, not to parallel a Skype chat. The moment this happens, the moment a section like this is allowed to grow, every other forum section and dare I say the entire community pays the price. Your community is held together by spam. The goings-on have a rippling effect on the way people type and behave board-wide, which in turn makes it that much more difficult for staff to do a good job.

This idea that there's nothing to talk about, even in terms of the Sonic section, is also ludicrous. I point to SSMB (who used to have a spam forum) which has bustling Archie and general canon/character discussion, large topics about Sonic Jump and Sonic Dash, and news on Sonic 1 and 2 remakes by Taxman. The Sonic section alone is going strong even without news of a boxed game in sight, so I think the excuse that there's nothing to talk about is just that- an excuse. The issue is that people never saw SB as a discussion forum first and foremost in the first place, so it's not being treated like one.

And as I said myself, don't use the excuse of lack of news to not discuss anything.

That just seems done before though. But it could just be me not exactly loving Sonic as I used to anymore.

But yes, game, media, et cetera I can do.

Here's some things to talk about concerning Sonic that no one is talking about here, directly lifted from SSMB:

Unanswered Sonic Questions (unexplained concepts, vague story ideas, plot holes, etc.)
Forgotten Sonic Music
Best Sonic Fanart
Combat in Sonic Games
Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions Concept For a Sonic Game
Sonic Jump vs. Sonic Dash
Sonic Unleashed Vs Sonic Colors
Sonic Unleashed Generations Mod Project
Knuckles: Relic of a Bygone Era or Major Character?
Sonic 1 & 2 Taxman Remakes
Hunnid-P Working On Music For the Next Sonic Game

And my topic:

The Problems of Sonic as a Theatrical Hero.

There's shit to talk about.

And those are my exact problems as well, just way more eloquently worded. lol There are plenty of things to talk about and having a rampant spam section does make a forum unhealthy.

I read the first, second, and fifth page of this topic. It's pretty amusing how different the forum members are now compared to how they were 4 - 6 years ago.

If all we were to discuss on here were Sonic, at this moment we'd be pretty close to a dead forum, simply because we're in a total lack of news regarding future installments to the series

Look at the top of the screen. There's a link to a =SB= website. Metallix set this up years ago in the hopes to inform members on a webpage what's going on with the forum itself, and the latest SEGA and Sonic news. If you want news, look it up. Post what you found. Give an opinion. Sonic Jump and Sonic Dash are games. SEGA Laptops were announced. There are remakes going on. Sonic Fangames are popping up left and right. Still nothing left to talk about?

That page is important to me, because a web page was the reason why I once became an administrator, and why I now bear the title of Lord. I couldn't fulfill it because of school, however. I still believe a web page will change this place, we just need people to do research for it, code it, and update it. I'm sure that updating it became worthless effort since everyone ignored it for the shack.

I'll say now, we don't have a huge population of artists who post their work on here that actively. There's also the fact that we have even less people who are skilled at giving artwork worthwhile critiques.

Stop. There used to be Graphics team on this forum. From what I remember, Bliz, Bowie, and Metallix are all artists. I've also seen workshops from kids like Bean the Dynamite. There's art profile sites trying to be promoted all along the page when you look on the Museum of the Arts page. Critique is critique. Having non-artists views are just as good as artist views. I know this very well, seeing how I'm a photographer. There's many artists on the forum, but they don't get love because no one shows it. That's the only reason.

Old members have been trying to get new things going since forum activity started to dwindle down a few years back. Forum members used to be close because of their Sonic discussion. The intention of this Sonic discussion board is to discuss Sonic. That will always be the purpose. If you're here to make friends, go on Facebook and let the actual members do their shit without the stupidities that we have now.

Metallix and an admin back in the day, 2pacfan, once came up with a prank, where there was a large argument about the forum and Metallix was banned. That prank lasted for 3 days. When everyone learned it was a prank, we all discussed on how funny it was. The community was so close, that we can pull pranks on each other. The best thing about that, was that we all talked about Sonic as soon as it was over. Now, everything is RP and Shackside. I don't participate in both because that's not why I joined in the first place. Notice the date I joined, and then the number of posts I made. Only 1,000 posts in 6 years? It's kind of hard to get those numbers up when you stay away from those two sections. I tried making a time trial trend for God's sake, yet NO ONE seems like they play Sonic at all.

If I can pick the best members of Sonic Blast history, I would pick Warzack (Who was DragonFlame when I met him), Neo Metallix (Who used to just roll as Metallix), Cap, MoD, Bowie, BlizShadow, PacFan47, Riders DX, Cy-Fox (Who I met on SCD I believe), Spin, and Talancir D'Landior. They all got things going. There was SOTW, Bliz's constant updates on new games and reviews, Bowie's amazing art, Metallix's PS3 fascinations, Cap's wit and art, and Warzack's comments on ALL of them. There was always something to look forward to. If there any members you should take seriously, it would be these guys. Follow their examples.

Ever since it's inception, I always thought the shack was stupid. It's the reason why my old website, Shadow Flash died out. We put in a chatbox and a shack. Silly mistake we made.

I vote for the shit to be gone. It's always been annoying.

While we're at it, why jjust keep this talk focused on Sonic? We do have other discussion forums after all. Movies and games are always coming out. There's always political unrest, always a weird story, always an amusing meme, always a common interest to share, and the constant drama, disagreement, and novel thought that accompany these things and their industries. If you can find literally nothing to talk about, the fact of the matter is you're not trying. Hell, I made a successful discussion topic out of dogs before. Freaking dogs, those things less popular than cats on the Internet. This isn't that difficult. It just takes people giving enough of a damn to talk to one another, to contribute.

I'll begin with what you've said regarding the =SB= website, in relation to your quote from me. My statement that we're in a lack of new regarding future installments in the series has been rectified by others already, and I see the fault in that statement.

Nonetheless, I have no interest in Sonic Jump and such a small amount of interest in Sonic Dash that there still appears to be nothing 'new' that's worthwhile to discuss. The Sega laptops look pretty cool, granted, but I have nothing to say regarding them. I'm completely ignorant of Sonic Fangames and hold no interest in learning more about them, and so unfortunately this offers little prospect for discussion for me as well.

Anything not 'new' regarding Sonic is possible to discuss, but it has to be something actually able to be discussed, such as either gameplay mechanics, music, or storyline. Perhaps graphics as well, but I'm really not sure how much there is to say in this regard, beyond the fact that the recent games look really pretty.

But, on a simpler level, when I discuss, I like to discuss, not simply give an "Oh, cool!" and move on. Which is probably why I keep looking back at this particular thread. We're all talking to each other and debating, which is something that I really like to see.

Perhaps there used to be a Graphics team on this forum. I can't speak for its history, being that I am fairly new on here. I didn't say "we have no artists", but rather "we don't have a huge population of artists who post their work on here that actively." Granted, the literature section has some things going still, but in particular I'm referring to visual artwork. Bean the Dynamite is probably the only one 'consistently' active on there, although there are some other topics that aren't dead as well. These living topics are commendable and a good thing, but I wouldn't say they mean we have a "large" and "active" art community. It's proportionately small.

The intent of the forum is indeed Sonic discussion and we should have more of that, but I'm not exactly seeing why this means we shouldn't have any other sort of discussion. The argument you've present effectively can be extended to mean that you think the only boards we should have on here are "Sonic's Universe" and "Starpost Gamezone." Yes, there should be more discussion in those boards. But no, I don't think that means there shouldn't be discussion elsewhere, in contrast to what you seem to be suggesting.

I'm in no place to say whether the names you've pointed out are shining examples of the forum's history or not because, as has been pointed out, I am a new member. That they contributed to the forum is brilliant though, and I am pleased to hear it.

Regarding your website, I see it as certainly possible that having both a shack and a chatbox ultimately contributed to its death. I doubt that's the only element involved, but I can't speak about this at length, due to the fact that I don't know of the circumstances.
