To escape the clouds of mana - an energy poisonous to our physiology - that slowly filled the atmosphere, humanity retreated to the space colonies around Earth, waiting for the day when they could return to the surface. That day never came. Tensions grew between the colonies as resources ran thin. Trade gave way to piracy. Cooperation gave way to conflict. Our race turned on itself in a desperate struggle for survival. Within fifty years, the space elevator, Yggdrasil, largest of the colonies, declared open war on all those who did not submit to their rule. As most of the machines and materials that humanity brought into space during their exodus were kept within the elevator, the lesser colonies found themselves out-stocked and out-gunned. Yggdrasil claimed victory within a handful of years. It is now the 25th century. Yggdrasil is populated by nobility who call themselves 'High Spaceborn', and rules over the other colonies with unquestioned authority. The 'Low Spaceborn' - those who live amongst the orbital colonies and the Moon - are exploited by the aristocracy, and the orbital stations have fallen into disrepair as a result. Once mighty beacons of survival have become barely-functioning patchworks of their former selves due to the Highborns' greed. However, the resource crisis is at a turning point. Technology has been developed to allow humans to survive on the Earth's surface for limited periods of time, allowing for scavenging parties to descend to the planet and bring back precious supplies and materials. You are the first human to step foot on this blue world in centuries, and you will change everything. ===== Welcome to Marble Blue: The First, written by me, TUC. This will be an interactive story in which the readers - YES, YOU, AT HOME! - will vote on what the character says or does next, guiding them on a completely unscripted journey through the world and (probably) towards some kind of plot. I say 'probably' because there's all the possibility that you'll make crazy decisions that derail any kind of sensibility, so yeah, just leaving that safety net out. The story may or may not be semi-canon to the larger mythos I'm building around this setting, depending on how things turn out. But first, having a protagonist might be nice. So let's make one! The most popular responses will determine who our protag is and what their current situation is like. --- First Name: (I'll pick a name at random from all the submissions, unless a particular name is popular amongst the masses) What is your greatest strength?: (pick one of the following) -I'm tough as nails! -No-one can keep up with me! -I've got a keen head on my shoulders. -Nothing surprises me. -I can get along with just about anyone. -If I get knocked down, I get straight back up again! -Guess I'm just lucky~! Majority agrees on the Orbital Colonies as a birthplace. We'll pick the other three points based on posting order. Therefore we have: Name: John (chosen by Never Mind) Greatest Strength: Guess I'm just lucky~! (chosen by Fenroar) Greatest Weakness: I tend to overlook things... (chosen by Ludichaos) Born in: The Orbital Colonies (majority vote) Completely forgot about the character's gender, but with a name like John, it's hardly worth discussing at this point. The next - and final - part of the protagonist's construction only has two questions, one of which is purely cosmetic. I'll leave this one for a few days though, as the first question has a lot of options. --- Both of John's parents work in the same profession, and he aspires to follow in their footsteps. What is this profession? -Shuttle piloting -Law enforcement -Merchanting -Medicine -Engineering -Armoured Labourer piloting -Piracy -Farming -Zero-Gravity Maintenance -Entertainment You get into a fight in an engineering bay. Your attacker cannot be reasoned with, and the situation is kill or be killed. 【The Knight of Tigers 】 Posts: 5,462 Group: Former Monarchs Member #6,733 Joined: March 17, 2008 Gender: Male Country: Australia 3DS Friend Code: 0404-6433-6113 Steam ID: crusaderandtimothy	Stats run on a scale of 0-5, with 2 being 'average', 0 being 'broken' (Luck 0 means you are pretty much going to die very soon, Grit 0 means being out in the sun for 5 minutes will give you cancer, etc) and 5 being the peak of human capability. Essentially, when you try to do something difficult, your stats will determine how likely you are to succeed; on a roll of a 6-sided dice you have to roll your stat number or lower to succeed (I'll be doing the rolling behind the scenes). Having a relevant Skill adds an extra 1 to your stat for the purposes of determining success. There's also a hidden mechanic that I won't reveal just yet...
