Fear the cold...

It looks like Star Trek might not be as far-fetched as it seems (space-travel wise). Physicist Miguel Alcubierre has devised an actually plausable theory for an engine that enables faster-than-light speed travel that the scientific community is quickly coming to accept. Here's what wired.com had to say about it.
I, for one, am pretty hopeful. Edited by Amarok, Mar 16 2013, 10:14 AM.

I'm hopeful for this too, but it states that they need to use lots of power in order to transport a ship, plus I don't think ANYONE on here would be able to use it by the time it's invented... |

You may be right about the second part; I don't think anyone here is any sort of astrophysicist. However, there are probes that can be used to test it's possible use once they've come up with a valid design. If it works, it might not even be a century before there are commercial flights to another solar system; there's already an attempt at space tourism with the technology we already have. |

I could be wrong but I think this topic belongs in the Station Square part of the forum, but eh. Its great yes, but it is much like my comment about advanced technology in another topic. Its a great idea and it would be great to see happen. I mean, going to other worlds, even star systems would be more possible than before. Of course, something often overlooked is humans and what they would do. Are we ready to become a space exploring civilization despite the issues and problems we face now? I feel before we should make such a jump we need to fix our problems here, less we end up with rogue states that possibly span entire planets, and planetary wars and problems. |

I have to agree with you Vlad; inventing the warp drive could result in planetary wars because there might be other intelligent species like us who would want to steal the technology, though I can also see this would result in pirates that travel through space, but that's stereotypical, so I don't really know... |

I think, if we start as a space-travelling species, it would actually be a good thing. Take a look at history. As long as there have been divisions in human residence, there's been some sort of conflict. However, as these human gatherings have joined together to face a common enemy (that often being another large village/country or something), the unity in that dwelling only grew stronger. I have to say, human's aren't perfect; we're always fighting someone, but if we somehow start colonizing other planets, all of this fighting energy could be diverted somewhere other than our own planet. It's not the perfect solution, but what is? |

Dude I would love for space pirates to be a thing. I wanna be a space pirate. Well, whether this drive works or not remains to be seen. Would be interesting, though financially I don't see large-scale application being a thing until humanity gets its shit together and restabilises itself (hahahahaha). |

Uh...I think you missed something there. The fact we suffer great income inequalities, food shortage problems(Due to unequal distribution), racial/xenophobia, and constant power struggles. Plus, a common enemy? Well, that maybe nice on paper, but the thing is war is not as simple as you may think. Believe it or not even in our most dangerous times we still like to fight one another. In fact, in such times, people who protest against a popular war always tend to be labelled as traitors, or sympathizers. It is a very common tool for those in power to use enemies of the state to unify the people to them. Its Nationalism 101. Does that make it right? Just cause the majority says it is doesn't make it so, nor is war always, if ever, justifiable. This makes it easier to sweep problems under the rug, such as those I mentioned. I mean, how can you focus on such issues when there is a "bigger" something going on? I cannot claim I have a perfect solution, but this isn't the way we should go. We need to fix our problems now, instead of thinking new advances in technology will change them. Less we end up just like we did in the colonial and industrial eras, creating uncontrollable situations that powder keg into something larger. As a character said in the intro to Starcraft Brood War, "We must go in this with both eyes open, once started, theres no going back." I am not saying your reasoning is wrong or that your optimism is wrong, it is just historically speaking the chances are not in favor of it. |

It's worth noting that one of earth's problems at the moment is arguably overpopulation. Colonizing other planets could help this. Being able to travel faster in space makes travel between the earth and other planets more efficient, which in itself could potentially be the big push we need to colonize the moon or Mars. Faster travel is in itself simply a tool to be put to use. It isn't some evil that will by default force us into causing trouble. But at the same time, it isn't some good that will by default cause good. It is, simply, a tool. It is not a cause, but rather a means. As you would point out, history is very worth noting. Humanity has done it wrong before, but that doesn't mean it will by default do it wrong again. There is enough examples to look back upon and learn from that I think it's fair to say we should be able to do better. Whether we will do better or not remains to be seen, but we most definitely should be able to. We do have vast income inequalities, and this is something we should be trying to fix. But, that doesn't mean we shouldn't be trying to settle other planets. It most definitely doesn't mean we should ignore the issue of overpopulation, either. Food shortages are at least partly due to unequal distribution, but at the same time having more space to grow food could in fact help with the issue too. Food would have to be grown on colonies on other planets, and so we would effectively be producing more food overall which would make dealing with unequal distribution of food proportionately easier. Racism is an issue too. Humanity has already come a long way in this regard though, so I see no reason why the problem won't continue to be dealt with. I can't see racism ever permanently disappearing, as an idea is near-impossible, if not impossible, to kill an idea, but I can see the issue becoming less and less over time. Power struggles are, again, an issue that I don't think can be dealt with permanently. Even if in theory we were to unite under a single leader, there would at the least be in-fighting, if not outright attempts to take power from him. While human nature has the capacity to do good, it also has the capacity to do bad, and there's really no way to permanently deal with this without taking away the humanity of people. The problem can certainly be made less and less though, I think. Edited by YamiShadow, Mar 18 2013, 01:24 PM.

I think YamiShadow has hit on some interesting points there, which basically boil down to this planet's finite space and resources. Finitude is one of the driving forces of conflict after all... Maybe interplanetary colonisation would ease that somewhat, assuming we don't have to terraform the colonies or anything. |
