All I hear is how Mobile is taking over the market and consoles/dedicated handhelds are doomed!! Well apparently the PS4 teaser video was the most watched video on Youtube in February besting Samsung's, "The next big thing" and Superbowl ads. I'm sure the next Xbox will spur a lot of commotion as well. So what is your take on mobile? They said dedicated handhelds would never succeed in this market but the 3DS is the highest selling system worldwide even above the Playstation 3(which is 2nd).

From what I understand of it (And I don't understand a lot mind you) a study somewhere has found that more and more people are happy and willing to spend money on downloadable mobile games then fork out a full £50/$60 for a full console title.
My personal opinion is its just a sign of the times, less people have the money to splash out on expensive consoles.

From my coutry, you are more popular if you have a Samsung Galaxy S other then having a PS3 or something so this boost the Samsung market, and only a few people still want to put some money on 3DS and other hand-held systems, besides, for us brazilians games from the stores aren't that much worth because they are only via international credit cards, wich you rarely find someone with one around.

That doesn't necessarily mean those are all console gamers that are buying mobile games though and this gen of consoles combined has done better than last. More consoles between Wii, 360, and PS3 have sold than GameCube, Xbox, and PS2 and this gen has been more expensive than last as well.

I think there are some that don't have as much money and/or just don't want to pay as much but phones are way more expensive than consoles anyway. An iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III are freaking expensive unless they are subsidized with a contract which just means it's less expensive now but way more expensive in the long run. Now they are more of a necessity but you can buy cheap prepaid phones that don't drain you on monthly payments so if someone has an iPhone and doesn't want to pay money for something it isn't a lack of money necessarily.

I think it's because people are looking at the raw numbers. Just shy of everyone has a phone, and today's phones are more capable of doing... pretty much everything. So, by the raw numbers of people doing the buying: of COURSE more people will be buying a game on a phone. That's kind of how the whole "casual gamer" market became a thing.

But I agree, it doesn't necessarily mean that traditional games are on the outs. Just because one plays a game on a phone, does not automatically make one a "gamer."
Indeed, there is nothing more repulsive than these monsters that defy nature and are known by the name of witcher, as they are the offspring of foul sorcery and witchcraft. They are unscrupulous scoundrels without conscience and virtue, veritable creatures from hell capable only of taking lives. They have no place amongst decent and honest folk.

I heard it first from the creator of Angry Birds.

I think its much like how we thought Virtual Reality would be pretty much what were doing for video games at this point. So far, I see just as many people dedicated to their consoles as mobile users.

I think its mostly people trying to say "HEY THIS IS GOING TO BET HE FUTURE, DON'T STICK TO THAT STUFF< ITS GOING TO BE LEFT IN THE DUST."

Its why I'm glad I don't follow the crowd. Often its the crowd that regrets their decisions in time.

I think people are buying dedicated consoles and handhelds because unless something really strange happens, you're not going to get Nintendo franchises like Mario, Legend of Zelda, and Metroid or other well-known games. Because there is no actual push-button controllers, no large developer is planning on making the mobile market their main source of income. Megaman has gone to the mobile market with a Megaman X remake and Megaman Xover, but that's mostly all mobile gaming is right now: low-powered games and casual games.
Now, to be fair, in the coming years I think we'll see the mobile gaming trend switch to phones and tablets instead of dedicated devices because while most games for the Android are indie games, these developers are going to build up a fan-following and eventually become well-known. And these indie developers, they will remember the difficulty of publishing with companies such as Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and Apple. We're already seeing a trend of new developers being able to publish software for the Android freely, unlike with dedicated gaming devices.
But dedicated devices are in no way distinguished by their closed nature. The Ouya and the Steam box are two very open consoles that might see some support, although that's a topic for a different thread.
I think the point is that mobile needs to get more serious titles and control schemes, and consoles need to be at least as open as Android phones.

Eh, I refer console games. I do like handheld games on the DS and what not but I've never been a big fan of mobile games, but they are getting a lot better I must say. Still, I much refer Console and Handheld.
