What invention would you like to be invented?

We're in a generation where anything is possible, we've sent robots to other planets, we've built robots that can communicate, we've mastered 3D without glasses, and we're getting closer and closer toward many new forms of technology.

But, what about that invention you've dreamed of, you know, that one you always wished existed. In this thread, I'd like you to share your idea for an invention, it can be either completely original, or something already played out through science-fiction. Either way, I'd like to hear about it.

Personally, an invention I hope for in the future, would be something that can make others hear their own language through a speaker on your arm. It would sort of be like an advanced wristband, with some buttons on it, there could be a screen, that allowed you to choose a language, such as German or French, and, you could type out a message much like the keyboard on an iPad, and upon pressing Send, you could hear your own voice/another voice in a different language saying the words you entered. A bit like Google Translate, only, without having to carry something around, nor having to hear the voice of someone else.

Something I'd like is something similar to "The Matrix", but good future-ified. Basically, for people who are going to die either to age or disease or ingury, their mind gets put into a sort of virtual reality thingy, so that instead of dying, they live on in a new world indefinitally.
And what if - for argument's sake - there is an afterlife (heaven/reincarnation/spooky ghost-time)? Would that not deny those put into the virtual reality the right to move on?
Would it solve anything if we made the process elective? After all, I don't imagine many of us would approve of forcing someone into such a state.
It might, but then that opens up a whole new can of worms. Is it ethical to choose not to die, on the chance that an afterlife exists? Is this virtual immortality some kind of metaphysical taboo, I guess is what I mean.

Regardless of that point, is immortality itself ethical? I'd argue that it might start to break people down after a while.

That depends; what's the ethical criterion you prefer?

Yeah, it seems likely that if I--being evolutionarily designed to live about 70 years--made it to 2000, I would react badly. My very values and way of thinking are adapted to a short life.

But I think there's an error in this thinking. We're taking humans as we know them now, assume that they would remain the same in essence over 2000 years, and we realize that such a space of time would ground down such humans.

I would argue, however, that this does much more with the evidence than is really warranted. After all, such a person would not be "human" in the way we understand the term. Rather than remain the same in essence, who knows how the mind of someone really released from biological constraints would evolve? Perhaps, to throw out one popular theory, the Buddha is correct in saying that everyone will find Enlightenment--given enough time to seek it.

Of course, that's flimsy speculation. But that's my point: As to immortality, there is not enough evidence to ground any ethical principle in terms of consequences.

Those who do good, do...
something to add onto the list of stuff that I would love to see invented would be cybernetic implants in the mind that allows the person to do stuff with only the mind, like a psychic would, and it can be programmable for different stuff, like telekinesis, future sight (god that's a reference to pokemon!) and teleportation...

I think that sort of thing might cause more problems than it solves. Can you imagine having to write protection of privacy laws in regards to precognition and teleportation? Furthermore, if everyone could see into the future, it would make EVERYTHING a huge mess; social interactions, the way people conduct their everyday lives, everything would be tainted with 'knowledge that should not yet exist'.

I do agree teleportation would be a useful thing to have, but only if it were between very specific points; for example, you walk into a teleporter in your home, 'dial' the teleporter of your workplace, and walk out of the teleporter there. Giving people free access to any conceivable point on Earth could make for problems, such as teleporting INTO people, allowing criminals to evade capture far more easily and other such issues.

That brings forward the question of whether or not the future is preordained as well. I personally would argue that it is not, and thus it is physically impossible to see "the future." At best, seeing one of the possibilities of the future might be viable, but that is stretching some boundaries in itself. At worst, it could potentially be used by some higher power in society to control those who actually believe what they're seeing is the future and not simply orders.

A replicator, as seen in Star Trek.

Let's face it... I'm a hopeless cook and all I can rely on is bunging simple foods in a microwave. So why not invent a device that synthesizes any type of meal you want in a flash? :)

Not to diss you, but I find this comment laughable. I highly doubt were the generation where anything is possible, otherwise, wed already be colonizing the solar system as we speak. You must look at technology with a realistic view point because everything has a cost. A opportunity cost, a economic cost, a environmental cost, then there's if the thing made is really contributing, harming, or hindering humanity. Not only is all what you said possible, but so is monitoring each human being on the earth, mass propaganda and misleading, as well as killing on a scale previously unimagined before.

You fly too close to the sun, your wings are gonna get burnt Icarus.

Although technology has advanced greatly, only a handful of innovations have really changed anything. Not only that, while our world and our technology has changed greatly, humans still have not. We are still a very violent and very materialistic species. What good will advance technology mean if we cannot even fix the current problems we have? With the wealthier nations becoming more like police states, I fail to see how it can benefit us in the long term, especially when it becomes a luxury for the wealthy. Much of the work is now being transferred to machines, and jobs become fewer in many positions. These are things we don't think about until its already in action, and when they are, changing anything becomes a painful and long process, sometimes not even being resolved at all.

Plus, I can't really say I want to see more advances in science, because it just adds to materialism. One day, you want jet packs to fly to work. You get that, then you want flying cars, automated houses(All which have prices might I add, environmentally and economically) and so on. Its a cycle of want that will not end unless you take control of it and realize what you need vs what you want.

I'm sorry this isn't what the topic calls on, but I don't really want to see much in the advance of humanity until we actually fix the problem that humanity has suffered since its recorded history: ourselves.

Two words: Time Machine. It may be cliche but come on, if a time machine that had no consequences to it whatsoever was invented, that would be so awesome.

Another thing that I would love would be a Mind Reader, I think it would be cool to see what people think of me and everything in general.
