We're in a generation where anything is possible, we've sent robots to other planets, we've built robots that can communicate, we've mastered 3D without glasses, and we're getting closer and closer toward many new forms of technology. But, what about that invention you've dreamed of, you know, that one you always wished existed. In this thread, I'd like you to share your idea for an invention, it can be either completely original, or something already played out through science-fiction. Either way, I'd like to hear about it. Personally, an invention I hope for in the future, would be something that can make others hear their own language through a speaker on your arm. It would sort of be like an advanced wristband, with some buttons on it, there could be a screen, that allowed you to choose a language, such as German or French, and, you could type out a message much like the keyboard on an iPad, and upon pressing Send, you could hear your own voice/another voice in a different language saying the words you entered. A bit like Google Translate, only, without having to carry something around, nor having to hear the voice of someone else.

It may sound stupid but um yeah, what I wish I invented is a McDonalds delivery service. It's not my dream or anything but yeah. Though I'm sure many people have thought about this, no one has ever worked this out. Not sure why, but it would seem like it would be a great concept. I dunno, I once figured this out and thought why the heck isn't this a thing yet? But yeah, there's probably a bigger reason behind it all -- maybe for the 'Muricans to actually come to the restaurant instead of being lazy and getting fatter, idk. Other than that I wish there were glasses with changing eyeglass strength -- they change with your eyes so that you don't have to get a new pair of glasses every time you feel like you can't see as good as before. Glasses are expensive and I'd rather pay a lot of something that works longer then pay a lot that works for a while. |

Marble Garden Act 1

A social media outlet that doesn't suck. In all seriousness, I've always thought it would be cool to have something that records thoughts, memories, dreams, or even your own imagination. Granted, this would require some sort of removable media that could connect directly to your brain, which should probably come before the above idea. By then, though, we'd all be cyborgs anyway. So I guess in the long run, cyborgs. |

Cyborgs are half-organism half-machine. We're already in the process of inventing real robots, and the only reason that anyone would be part-machine is if they needed a false, robotic limb. I personally would love to see anything that can make fiction a virtual reality. Or a machine that puts you in any dream you want. This too. Edited by Toronto, Mar 6 2013, 08:52 AM.

You won't get much closer, 'till you sacrifice it all.

Yep yep yep. Also I agree with your idea about turning any form of fiction into reality, or inventing a virtual reality, that you can actively become a part of. Real life is just boriiiing~ :I |

for me, it'd be the karts from the old Mario kart games, I mean, it'd be cool to drive around AND throw powerups just like in the games, and not get hurt, as well as get other kinds, including the B Dasher from Mario Kart DS... on the other hand, I would LOVE to see a game console that relied on your mind alone, no controllers, no voice activations, no movement, just your mind... |

Hard-light holograms, cybernetics (which has been discussed earlier, I'll get to that in a moment) and a clippable mat. Now, as Hell0 pointed out beforehand:
Firstly, the prosthetic technology we have is very limited; only rich folks or people who sign up to be guinea pigs get robotic limbs, and even those tend to be slow and not terribly responsive, not to mention there's very little tactile feedback because it's an attachment foreign to the body's nervous system. Most people only get very rudimentary prosthetics, which are either stiff and unmoving but somewhat natural-looking, or something practical (e.g. articulated arms or those bouncy legs, the specific name of which escapes me) but obviously inhuman. The kind of cybernetics we're hoping for are ones that are not only fully articulated with zero time lag between nervous input and prosthetic reaction, but can also visually pass as 'normal' or 'natural'. We're also looking for a way to make the human body and machines fully integrable, as we do not yet have a perfect means to connect the nervous system to mechanical parts. This is the reason why people with prosthesis can't actually feel anything from that limb or limbs, which I can only imagine is traumatic at best. But it doesn't just stop with limbs. Imagine replacing (or adding to) any part of the human body with machines and/or computers. Chips in the brain that allow wireless access to communication systems would remove the need for phones and would be the beginning of phasing out computers in favour of direct brain-to-internet connection. Mechanical organs would make organ donation and transplants redundant. Cybernetic eyes would allow the blind to see in full colour, high-definition quality, not to mention all the vision enhancements that could be installed on such a system (zooming function, infrared/ultraviolet vision, maybe even in-built cameras). The same applies to other senses, though having a cyborg tongue or nose seems a little trivial to me somehow; still, you never know what you've got 'til you've lost it, I guess. So yes, maybe cybernetics aren't needed, per se, but it would be a vast improvement over what we have thus far. Edited by Tora Unlimited Crusader, Mar 6 2013, 02:31 PM.

Personally, I would love to see a realistic version of chao to raise. They look rather cute and cuddly so I would love to see them be made as pets somehow in real life. I would have so much fun taking care of them.

But wouldn't this present the risk of contracting computer viruses that could spread to your brain and nervous system? It seems to me to be a very risky idea. We know so little of the brain right now; it would be extremely farfetched to imagine anything like that coming along for a very long time. If we did do this, though, we would definitely have to make sure there is a long line of extensive security measures and failsafes to ensure that such a digital-to-organic virus couldn't compromise the health, freedom, or sanity of any user of such a chip. I feel like there's probably a novel or movie based on this, but I don't know about it. Sounds like a great idea for a sci-fi story. As for me -- in response to the topic at hand -- I'm not all that big on ideas like hovercars and holograms. A lot of people think that it would be extremely beneficial to replace all human conflict where wars are concerned with robotic conflicts on safer battlefields; I say, if you're going to do that much, why not just stop warring altogether? By that point, I would hope the necessity for such violence would be obsolete. I think the most important scientific innovations of the future will be medical and pertaining to exploration of space. I hope to see effective and safe colonization of the Moon, Mars, perhaps Mercury and Venus, Titan, Triton. Beyond that, colonization and exploration would be best expanded via some sort of hyperdrive, using some technology we've not discovered yet, or have yet to fully develop to its furthest potential. That would ensure interstellar travel, and may help us to search for other civilizations beyond our local cluster, or perhaps beyond our galaxy. Then there's the medical advances. Eradicating illness as a whole would be fantastic: quick response to unknown diseases or viruses and distribution of cures and vaccines for them; perhaps nanobots to complement our natural immune systems which will destroy harmful bacteria and other foreign entities, perhaps helping with hormone and enzyme balance in the body and brain, which may very well eliminate mental illness. Perhaps a variety of cybernetic prostheses that are integrated with the nervous system in such a way as to be receptive to sensation as well as perfectly responsive with minimal -- if any -- lag. The possibilities here are almost endless. |

Good vibes.

Something I'd like is something similar to "The Matrix", but good future-ified. Basically, for people who are going to die either to age or disease or ingury, their mind gets put into a sort of virtual reality thingy, so that instead of dying, they live on in a new world indefinitally. |

And what if - for argument's sake - there is an afterlife (heaven/reincarnation/spooky ghost-time)? Would that not deny those put into the virtual reality the right to move on? |

Would it solve anything if we made the process elective? After all, I don't imagine many of us would approve of forcing someone into such a state. Edited by Katsuko, Mar 6 2013, 09:43 PM.
