“Well this is just great. I’m scarcely out of the infirmary and back on my feet when I’m called over to begin my next fight. I tell you, if the medicine they use wasn’t so darn good, then I’d be calling them out on this.”

Blaire was walking along the path that lead to the arena that would be home to her second match. Like before, there was a guide leading her to the battlefield, though not the same one from before. The guide looked back at the husky, chuckling softly. “Aren’t you calling them out now?”

The canine stopped suddenly, her mouth agape in realization. “Well, I didn’t think of it that way.”

As they walked on the trail, the guide began to shiver. He rubbed his hands together and blew into them, his breath coming out as a few foggy wisps. “Dang, it’s getting chilly out here.”

Blaire shrugged, a smug grin materializing on her muzzle. “I don’t feel cold at all.”

“Well consider yourself lucky then. Because the entire arena is kinda frigid temperature wise.”

The husky arched an eyebrow. “Is that so then?” In the palm of her hand she tried to form an ice shard – a frown ceased her features when nothing happened. “Okay, so it’s not that cold. No problem, I have a way around that,” she said knowingly, hands clasped behind the small of her back.

The guide casually adjusted the glasses he was wearing. “That’s nice to know,” he replied, not quite knowing what Blaire was talking about.

When they had set out to the arena, one of the first things Blaire had noticed was the thick fog in the horizon. The gray-blue miasma seemed to cloak much of the stadium, something that the young Mobian wasn’t too thrilled about. For after fighting in a place that was completely dark, having her vision limited again simply did not appeal to her.

Well, as long as there isn’t any fire, then I guess I can’t complain too much.

The guide stopped at a thicket of aspen trees. “We’re here. “

Blaire stepped forward – and three of her senses were assaulted. Her ears caught a faint crackling din, while the pungent aroma of burning wood seeped into her nostrils. And what she could see, partially veiled amongst the fog, was a few red-orange lights.

The dog turned to the guide, a vexed frown crossing her muzzle. “Please explain to me what this is about?” she asked him, gesturing to the fire with a sweep of her arm.

The guide merely shrugged. “Don’t ask me. I have no part in the design of these arenas.”

Blaire hung her head in discontentment. “Well, I only hope that the next ring doesn’t have any fire.” The husky scoffed. “Heh, with my luck I’ll be fighting in a volcano!”

“Well, you can go into the arena. I wish you the best of luck in your match,” the guide said with a stiff bow.

The husky nodded, her features materializing into a smile. “Why thank you. I’ll certainly try to win this one.”

As the guide walked away, Blaire stepped inside, keeping her distance from the fire, which she could now faintly see was burning within a large iron brazier. As she looked around, the canine could tell that the trees had all been hand planted. For they were all in neat rows, evenly spaced apart, with flowers and wildgrass growing inside the shade of the leaves. Interspaced among them were piles of leaves that were in various stages of decay, probably acting as fertilizer or something of the sort.

Blaire switched on her Cryokinetic Bangle, wishing again that the temperature around her had been cold enough so that she wouldn’t need to use the item. But alas, she would have to make do with what she had. Now all she had to do was wait for her opponent to arrive so she could get on with this match.

On the way to the arena, Silfide did not say anymore to her guide than simple "yes"s, "no"s, and "maybe"s. She was not feeling particularly up to small-talk ... as if that were anything new. She clutched her holy book tightly as they walked through the cold, approaching a fog which soon enveloped them in a thick veil.

She smiled. Fog, she thought: good cover. She hadn't picked up much in her isolation from the rest of the combatants, and thus wasn't entirely sure what she was up against. Unless she had to fight the giant machine, she felt rather safe in the miasma -- though still rather nervous.

"Something pleasing you, ma'am?" asked the young guide, his pimply face smiling anxiously, afraid of her silence.

Silfide pursed her lips once more, and all traces of the smile floated away into the fog. "Nothing," she said -- her longest word thus far pronounced -- her eyes intent on the path ahead.

The guide looked away quickly, and decided to keep mum for the rest of the trip.

The gradualness of the dense, rolling fog made Silfide not even realize that she was hearing a muffled crackling in the distance, and smelt the fearful scent of burning timber, until she saw the faint orange glow growing larger as they approached. It stirred, indeed -- however briefly -- images of fire trying to climb tree-trunks desperately, the sounds of burning souls screaming being drowned out by the overwhelming roar of a jungle Hell.

She shook her head, dispelling the thoughts, focusing upon the path ahead. Her guide had noticed the look in her eyes, and his pace quickened. Silfide noticed, but did not mention it.

"Here we are, ma'am," said the young man dryly, trying to hide his trepidation with austere professionalism. He spread his hands around them: a vast arena oppressed by fog, man-planted trees standing erect and straight, ordered into perfect lines, the tops shrouded with thick mystery. Visibility in every direction seemed to be limited to about fifteen feet. Good, thought Silfide.

"Good," she echoed out loud, dismissing the guide with a wave. He was frightened by the little flamingo's grim austerity, and as a result forgot to bow as was expected of him, instead immediately hurrying off. Silfide did not notice his lapse in professionalism, and would not have cared if she did.

She stepped into the arena, looked across the great burning brazier -- the source of the glow she had seen on her way -- and saw a vague silhouette against the fog. She squinted her eyes, trying to see the figure in more detail over the haze lifting off of the fire, and through the shroud of moisture in the air. She offered an awkward wave at her supposed opponent, unsure if they could even see her.

Thanks to the thickness of the mist that swathed the forest, Blaire was unable to see her opponent when she arrived. At least not at first. But a sense of curiosity overcame her, and she ventured a few steps, peering closely into the gray-blue murkiness. And at last she could see it, the hazy silhouette of the one she was to face in this arena.

As with her last match, Blaire couldn’t figure out just who it was that she was going to fight, for the fog was simply too dense. Of course, the husky would find out momentarily, once she got further into the forest as the fight commenced.

She waved a hand up in greeting. “Hello there!” she called out, her voice one of the only clear things in the entire area. “My opponent I presume? Allow me to introduce myself.”

Eyes closed, the canine gallantly drew her saber and twirled it around one time, ending with the tip of the blade against her ears in a salute. “Agent Blaire Fields of the Oakland Resistance Division. I shall be your rival for this round.”

She slowly lowered her sword, a smirk making its way across her lavender muzzle at the same speed – she didn’t care that her foe couldn’t see it. “I sure hope you can offer me a good match! I wouldn’t want this fight to be too one-sided, if you know what I mean.”

“So then…” she crouched down into a position commonly used by runners at the start of a race, the tip of her tail twitching in anticipation. “Let’s have at it!”

Like a bullet from a gun, Blaire shot forward. However, instead of making a straight beeline for her opponent, the canine decided to use the fog and trees to her advantage. She deftly weaved her way through the coppice of aspens, using them and the miasma as cover. The husky ran, rolled, and jumped behind trees, and a couple of times, she even used the trunk of an aspen to launch herself behind another.

The dog hoped that she was moving fast enough so that her opponent wouldn’t be able to track her movements. If all went well, she would be able to move in for a sneak attack. And getting the first strike would help give her the edge in this round.

"Silfide Gensai," came the hollow, reserved response to her silhouetted opponent. Before she could say anything further, however, the shadowy outline took flight, running through the trees.

Immediately, Silfide fled, trying her best to track Blaire's movements by the sounds of her running and jumping, and also by the hazy outline in the distance that jumped from tree to tree, like a small object flicking past a peephole over and over, difficult to discern effectively. She tangoed with the trees, her sandal'd, webbed feet near silent in the foggy dreamworld of this arena, trying to keep her distance from Blaire's attempt to sneak attack.

And while making her quiet retreat, she multitasked, a skill well worth developing when trying to survive in the Amazon rainforest. She kept a hand on the bark-bound book on her belt, and recited a most peculiar prayer in a most alien language, known only to a very small few who do not hail from her small tribe which used to thrive in a secluded nucleus of the Amazon.

Key words: used to. Silfide was the only one left.

And while reciting her prayer, and while fleeing from Blaire, she prayed to God that he'd get her out of this in one piece.

Out of the corner of an eye, Blaire caught the blurred figure of Silfide. The flamingo seemed to be either tracking the husky or trying to keep a safe distance from her. Whatever the reason didn’t concern Blaire. For the dog believed that it would her that would get the first strike. Or, that’s what she had planned to do at the very least.

The Oakland Resistance Division Agent leapt behind one of the trees. She crouched down beside it, silently wishing that the trunk was larger so she could properly hide behind it. Ah well, at least she had the fog to help her hide.

Blaire looked around the tree to see her foe still weaving through the forest. A sly grin crossed her lavender muzzle and a light chuckle slipped from her throat like water into a decanter. “Come on, just a little closer now,” the dog whispered, tightening her grip on her saber.

For a moment, Silfide was lost to the miasma and Blaire muttered a small curse under her breath. She didn’t have to wait long before the flamingo reemerged thankfully, but this time Blaire wasn’t going to continue to stand around and wait for her foe to get close enough to strike at. It was time to take action once again.

The Mobian rushed forward a second time, adroitly winding about through the mist-shrouded thicket. At one point, she stepped in a pile of decomposing leaves – as they rained down on her, Blaire slashed at them with her sword, displacing some fog in the process.

The dog pulled a leaf from her fur tuff. As she tossed it over her shoulder, the canine softly muttered to herself. “Not my smartest move, but at least I didn’t run into a tree or anything like that.”

Blaire let out a low gasp as she found herself with a clearer view of her opponent. That gasp soon melded into a snicker, for everything was already starting to come together. The dog increased her speed to its fullest, steadily closing the distance between her and Silifide. And once she felt herself close enough, the dog swung her saber with great gusto.

Right and true the saber struck Silfide.

Only, it passed through her as if she weren't there, and she disappeared in a puff of smoke.

The true Silfide, along with her remaining two duplicates, made themselves busy, running around in the fog around Blaire in an attempt to confuse her.

Thank you, sent Silfide up to her most responsive benefactor.

She planned to wait until Blaire lunged after one of the clones before making a move to attack. She smiled. This had gotten exciting quickly, and the feeling of her pounding heart was exuberant.

Blaire couldn’t help the smirk of triumph that crossed her muzzle when her sword struck Silfide. As soon as the attack had connected, she skidded a little ways, kicking dirt and loam up into the air. Using her saber to stop herself from sliding into a tree, the husky turned around to get a full view of her injured opponent. She nodded in satisfaction as she saw her opponent kneeling, clutching a fresh wound on her side.

At least, that was what was supposed to have happened by Blaire’s calculations; and what actually did happen was something the dog had never before encountered.

As she swung her saber, the dog couldn’t help but notice the extreme lack of resistance she was feeling. Yes, while it was true that the blade was sharp enough to cut through skin like it was butter, there had always been some resistance whenever she had sliced through something. This was the first time that the Mobian hadn’t felt anything at all.

An expression of surprise on her visage, Blaire looked back over her shoulder. Her eyes widened as she saw the flamingo, completely unscathed, vanish as if she was made of the same mist that saturated the arena. “What on Mobius is going on here?”

The canine skidded to a stop, creating a very small trench in the moist ground. She quickly glanced around and soon located her opponent off in the distance – or what she believed to be her opponent. For while she had figured out that Silfide had created some kind of illusion, she didn’t realize that the flamingo had a couple more clones to keep the husky at bay. So when Blaire ran forward, she did not consider the fact that the figure she was moving towards was not her true target.

Around and around the clones ran, spinning fast but closing in slow, like a light focusing in on a piercing point in the fog. Silfide's footsteps were not being kept at their usual silence: she made sure to step on sticks and drifts of leaves in order to create a chaotic rustling effect, assaulting Blaire's ears from her constantly shifting positions around her. All of her clones did the same, causing an almost perpetual ring of sound to disorient her opponent, the gaps disappearing one by one as the ring shrank in on her.

The action reminded her of the days of her youth spent hunting in the rainforest. Though she was only nineteen, those days of safety and innocence felt very far behind her. Her heart threatened to burst from her chest, and she barely held in a childish laughter, almost akin to the giggle of a little one being tickled. She thought of perhaps using such laughter to her advantage in order to further confuse Blaire; but decided she against it on the grounds that it was too risky: her clones could speak, but had a distant voice, making it easy to pinpoint the real Silfide's position.

After the radius of the slightly irregular ring zeroed in to about that of a baseball diamond, Blaire in the pitcher's position and easily able to see the clones, Silfide executed her three-pronged gambit. From "home-base," one of her clones ran forward at Blaire, jumping and slashing wildly with her kukri. Silfide hoped this attack would seem to Blaire as a feign, assuming (correctly) that this was a clone, and quickly dispatching it before turning around to face the surprise attack. Then, from first- and third-base, Silfide and another clone ran at Blaire, the clone running in the same noisy fashion as the other two Silfides had done as they tornadoed around Blaire, but Silfide running silently so as to take her by surprise: a double trick.

Bangle completely charged. Effect will now activate.

Blaire allowed herself a satisfied smirk as she felt the temperature around her decrease with the power of her Cryokinetic Bangle. Such an event would certainly prove to be a great factor in her victory, assuming she would even win this match. But she felt confident in her abilities.

She quickly closed in on Silfide, her dark blue trench coat billowing out behind her. As she approached the flamingo, she began to hear rustling from all around her. Her ears twitched with the relentless din of snapping branches and crunching leaves. An expression of bafflement crossed her visage.

Wait. Why would there be rustling happening all around me? After all, I only have one opponent.

Though Blaire’s reasoning was sound and logical, a quick glance around the arena to see just what had been causing all that noise revealed the truth. The husky’s cerulean eyes widened and her fur stood on end, her tail almost looking like a bottle brush.

What on Mobius?

In an arena where the dog had thought one Silfide was, there were actually three. The canine couldn’t believe what was happening. Was this some kind of trick of the fog? Blaire recalled a match in a former tournament, its stadium filled with smoke. In her mind she saw bullets slowly melting as they inched towards her, a room that swayed all around her, and an opponent whose body stretched and contorted in disturbing fashions. Was this happening again? Was the miasma causing Blaire to have hallucinations?

Or was this something her opponent was doing on her own?

The canine didn’t have time to ponder this situation, as one of her opponent’s clones came right at her. The flamingo was swinging a weapon that Blaire did not recognize, but that was the least of the husky’s worries right now.

As her foe got closer, the dog got herself in a position to attack. When the clone was just about to reach her, Blaire leapt off to the side, just missing a strike from the kukri the duplicate was swinging around. The young Mobian moved her own saber around in a wide arc, hoping that the blade would end up connecting with the flesh and blood form of the true Silfide.

Silfide had not anticipated such an arced attack, and despite her quick reflexes took a hit. She partially behind the other clone that had doubled her sneak attack, and held up her arms to deflect the hit. Her bracers took the brunt of the attack, but her left hand was hit. It wasn't a very deep cut, but it was enough to bleed, and enough to hurt. The two remaining clones were both hit, and disappeared.

Due to her fortune in reacting quickly enough to avoid a more catastrophic, she quickly made to get away from Blaire. She swore under her breath, putting away her kukri before clutching her wounded hand: no risking getting her own poison in her bloodstream. She hoped dearly that Blaire didn't have a poisoned weapon, too. It was too soon to know, so she pushed away the thought and kept running away from Blaire.

It might be a wise tactic, she thought, to trick Blaire into thinking she was more heavily wounded than she actually was. Blaire could be lured into false confidence, and more easily taken by surprise. She began to add a slight but noticeable limp to her sprint, and pressed against the thigh of the limp (the left) with her wounded left hand. She winced a bit at the pain, but tried to get blood on her pants there, so as to further bamboozle Blaire. With her right hand she again drew her kukri, and held it with the tightness of a felled soldier clutching at his sidearm, waiting for a brother-in-arms to come to his aid before the enemy finishes him off.

The blade of Blaire’s saber did indeed hit the real Silfide, slicing through her left hand. It wasn’t exactly where the husky wanted to strike, but it would do for a start. And to the canine’s surprise, the other two clones suddenly vanished, leaving but one flamingo in the fog-shrouded arena. As for the real Silfide, she swiftly moved away from the husky – Blaire scowled, for had the bird been a little slower, the dog could have gotten a second attack in.

But what really astonished the dog was the slight limp the flamingo had. Blaire cocked her head to the side in bewilderment. She was positive that her sword had not hit anywhere on her opponent’s leg. So, what was going on? The canine wondered if the limp had been due to a previous injury – maybe Silfide had stepped on a fallen branch earlier.

Blaire shook her head. “No time to worry about that.” In her hands, the canine formed a pair of long ice shards. “I’ve got a battle to win!

The first of the shards she tossed at a tree, aiming to make sure the ice projectile came as close to Silfide as possible, without actually hitting the bird. It was Blaire’s hope that her foe would get freaked out from the close call and be driven to distraction, making it easier for the second shard to hit her. The second shard that she threw right now.

Silfide quickly spun around, quickly forgetting about her supposed injuries (which hadn't worked too well in her favor, anyhow), being startled at the sound of some sharp projectile embedding itself in a tree. By then, it was too late . . . or almost too late.

The second shard was thrown, and if it weren't for her sharp reflexes and sheer luck, it no doubt would have pierced one of the many chinks in her liberal armor, or perhaps even pierced one of the leather "plates" which constituted it. She stretched backwards like playing limbo, her legs bending at the knee to allow her to fall back all the way. This prevented her from being seriously hurt by the unknown projectile, but it still grazed closely enough by her face to make a fairly lengthy vertical cut. It stung more than she had expected it to, and she realized why at the same time she noticed it wasn't bleeding. It had been extremely cold; ice, in fact, and had intensified the pain as well as clotting the flow before the blood even noticed there was a place to escape from. The shard had lost energy in its encounter with Silfide, and merely bounced off a tree behind her, falling to the ground and shattering.

Her quick maneuver hadn't been exactly graceful. She quickly rolled her mass backwards onto her hands, and then sprung upward onto her feet. Her first move after this was a quick hop to her right, in an attempt to avoid future shots. Then she bolted for Blaire, her eyes locked on her hands, ready in case of any more shards to attack her, and her hand equipped with her poisoned kukri.

We are at Two Week Limit for this match. Let's get Fenroar and Josh over here for some judging.

well, maybe Fenroar... considering his recent computer problem, let's see if he's up to being able to judge on this match. if not, then I'll look to see if someone else is available to do it.

Alright, well, I get to have my sister's Mac for another week, but she uses it too of course, and I have school, so let me whip it up carefully quick. After reading it, the battle, though incomplete, is going to be rather hard to judge, as you two did an excellent job. Just a shame it couldn't be finished, but I'm going to have to be nit-picky to pick out a winner.

Grades

Grammar: Unfortunately, your posts were too... perfect. Couldn't find any big complaints, and believe me, I tried. Thus, you're both going to hate me for this, but I suppose this should serve as further motivation to actually get matches done for you two and for those who read this, I'm going to beyond nit-picky here. Both of you had several comma/spelling mistakes and I tallied who had more. For each mistake, you lose .25 of a point.

Blaire: Forgot 3 commas. Two in your first two posts, one in post number nine. 3 total mistakes. Thus an 9/10.

Silfide: Forgot 3 commas. Two in your first two posts, one in post ten. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but in your first post, shouldn't it be 'yeses' 'no-s,' and 'maybes'? Just seemed weird that you used quotation marks. I'll count that as one mistake. In post number eight, you had 'decided' and 'she' mixed around. It should be "but she decided against it..." instead. You also forgot a word or something in post ten. The first sentence of your second paragraph sounds like it's missing something as you say "Due to her fortune in reacting quickly enough to avoid a more catastrophic, she quickly made to get away from Blaire." Think you missed a word after catastrophic. It should also be a semicolon instead of a colon later in that paragraph. Seven total mistakes. 8.25/10 which(I asked Talancir about this fyi) decimals have to round up or down, so it turns into an 8/10.

Sorry. As you can tell, I had to be a grammar freak for your battle in order to pick out a winner, but let this serve as a further motivation to finish battles. If you have any questions, seeing grammar can be easily miss-able, let me know via PM. Josh and/or Talancir can go through to make sure and/or back me up. But Wallace made the more mistakes, so Blaire eeks it out here.

Entertainment: Again, this is hard to decide. Both of you used deceiving tactics and detailed attacks to attack each other. Just a pity it couldn't finish.

8/10 Silfide
8/10 Blaire

Fair Play: Your matches were too short to draw out anything decisive or notable, but you both played fair, showing reasonable hits and misses.

10/10 Silfide
10/10 Blaire

Adaption to Environment: Again no major complaints here. You two used the environment with the limited posts, but I felt like it could have been used more at times.

9/10 Silfide
9/10 Blaire

Overall, this was a really hard battle to judge, as you two did so well, so I had to be the nit-picky of nit-picky here.

Blaire: 36/40
Silfide: 35/40

Blaire advances! Good luck to you two in your respective matches.

Those who do good, do...
ok since it's my turn for judging, I'll be thinking deeply about this...

--------------------

Grammar: I have to say, you both have done grammar pretty good, though there are mistakes in both of your work, and Silfide, I can see you made more mistakes than Blaire did, so Blaire gets an 9/10 from me as well, though Silfide gets only 7/10 for this category...

Entertainment: I have to say, both of you were interesting, and though it's hard for me to pick a good score, I'm sticking with 8/10 for both of you...

Fair play: the matches were short, though despite that, I can easily see what info there is, and like Fenroar did, I'm giving you both 10/10.

Adaptation to Environment: I can see they used the environment pretty well, I'm giving them both an 8/10 for this.

ok I'll add up the totals for this and we'll see who's through to the next round...

Blaire has 35/40
Silfide has 33/40

Blaire, you're through to the next round, good job!
