Christmas is back again

Okay I've been wanting to add something like this, even if I know the majority ain't exactly on this forum, due to several reason, that I ain't going to mention.

Lately I've admittedly gone back to my roots of a PC gamer really.
As mentioned before, I liked the Civilization series.

But lemme add other titles I've come across and that each own's a tad bit of Turn based elements in it.

Heroes of Might & Magic
- This series here alone, I've spent most hours on then any game out there. That even includes such games like the Elder Scrolls... HoM&M3 was the first one that totally made me realize one thing. This is exactly my kind of game. Sure, I have a certain weakness when there's dragons included I'm all out picking something up by the store. (Note, I've slowly become more skeptic as of late, and try and stray away from titles unknown to me.)
Nevertheless this weren't all that I liked. Probably because it features both RP elements, equally strengths of strategy, though I admit the more the series has developed, the more stuff your allowed to amerce your self in. Such as skills, abilities, making your heroes quite the powerful additions to an ever-growing army.
Also, did I love the map editor. I fashioned bout 20 maps alone to this game. Why it may not sound to incredible, it was the one with the largest size, and I always tried to stretch the imaginary boundaries of the game. Unfortunate nether of the editors has been in favor since that, and I've refrained from using or making more maps.
Good there's load with other who spend ages on developing more maps, then what the creators actually bothered to do.
Won't go in to much detail around this, I could however advice anyone who likes both RP and strategy elements to pick this up. And if you don't mind the slow phased turn based style, that means no stress. Pick up a glass with soda, while literally nothing happens, even without pausing it.

Age of Wonders 2 Shadow Magic
This game specifically I'd like to mention as it's now 9 years old, but after so long it looks like the Minecraft developer and who once started this project have invested in a sequel that I cannot wait personally for. Release is late this year. Nevertheless, this is even more complex.

Though I guess there are certain elements that make it different, and I believe only picking up a few mods would change the overall old fashioned, and most of all, less balanced system.
What is there to say, that I've spent many hours on this.

Warlock Master of Arcane
It's like Civilization, wrapped up in medieval cheese, along with mythological creatures. Yet the game has indeed certain flaws and have never kept me going throughout a whole game. Shame, but I'm hoping they'll continue to throw in updates that might prove me it's worth picking up a round again, without having to drop out.

Fallen Enchantress
Oh yeah, just recently picked this up, and wow. I've quickly fallen in love with it. Though I wouldn't recommend it just yet for fellow turn-based fans. Instead wait for the standalone expansion coming out in April. It's not exactly going to be bigger, but more balanced, fixing loads of tweek's that I have noticed, but I'm enjoying it as far, so meh! Also I'm able to finish these games without getting to bored. And that's a good thing.

Note, I have more up my sleeve, but wanna see if there's anyone else who can enjoy them self something within this category of games.

I've recently came across a lovely little downloadable title on my 3DS called Crimson Shroud, It's actually designed to look like an old D&D game, All the characters/enemies are models with a display base and everything, the scenery looks like a 3d board game table and you even have virtual dice to roll to activate some moves/effects.
Course its also very text heavy and the animation is nearly none existent but it has a certain charm to it.

I've never really been a fan of Turn Based Strategies or RTS's, to be perfectly honest. However, as far as RTS's go, I highly recommend the original StarCraft and its expansion Brood War. That is literally the only RTS with multiple team types that understands the word 'balance' and the word 'distinct'. WarCraft III is passable, but not to the same degree as StarCraft.

As for RPGs... I can't think of any good ones for the PC, off the top of my head. Most of the better ones I've played are for the Gameboy Advance.

Super Robot Wars.

Come on, you all knew this was coming, don't pretend like you didn't.

Best turn-based-strategy RPG of the year all the years, whether it's the main series - which involves a massive crossover of a whole bunch of different mecha shows - or the Original Generations series - which pulls all the Banpresto original characters from the main series and gives them their own universe to have kickass robot fights in.

If you like mecha, you'll love Super Robot Wars. Even if you don't like mecha, these games will MAKE you like mecha.

Unfortunately, most of the games were never localised ( ;___; ur an ass Bandai Namco), but we have English versions of Super Robot Wars OG 1&2 for the GBA, as well as the first game of the spinoff series, SRWOG Saga: Endless Frontier. Full translation patches can be found for Super Robot Wars Judgement for the GBA (reportedly the easiest game of the franchise) and I think Super Robot Wars Alpha for the PSX (someone correct me if I'm wrong on that one).

It's a pity because the games from the PS2 era and onwards have the most gorgeous battle animations and cover more recent mecha shows like Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, Evangelion, Linebarrel, Shin Mazinger and... Vocaloid apparently in the upcoming 3DS game...

Well, I could gush about that for hours, but bleh. |D

Strategy game thread? strategy game thread.

Age of Empires 2 and its expansion pack I do enjoy, as well as Age of Empires and its expansion packs. Though Age of Mythology arguably may easily take either place for being full of awesome. I also have the original Supreme Commander on Steam. Also got Masters of Orion 1 and 2, played Masters of Magic on DOSBox, and I gots Sword of the Stars Complete and Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion. I also enjoy the Civilization series.

Heroes 5 and its fantasy world I enjoy, along with the expansion that adds dwarves(A race I love). Also got Age of Wonders 2 as well. But the game that would top them both for me would likely be Disciples 2. Gods I love that game. Love playing the Mountain Clans and the Legions of the Damned.

Speaking of, anyone know any good strategy games in a fantasty universe? I got Warlock though Im sorta impartial to it. Though I do love the religion mechanic in that.

Turn-based RPGs? Well, there's always Final Fantasy.

But the Fire Emblem series is a really great Strategy series, especially its amazingly looking 3DS entry, Fire Emblem: Awakening. I don't play much strategy games though, except Final Fantasy Tactics a while back.

I'm surprised that neither the original Fallouts or the X-COM series were mentioned at all in the thread, both turn-based games--the former is an role-playing game while the latter had been remembered as a strategy series, and both were exceptionally well-made and popular, their reputations still upholding to this day as strong, if not stronger than they were when they first came out.

Hello, my name is Someone. I'll be your correction artist today. -bow-

You're close, Crusader. Super Robot Wars Alpha Gaiden has a translation patch, but as far as I know the original does not. I haven't played much of it but it's a pretty solid translation, I reckon.

But yes, I can back up what Crusader says about the series. Certainly one of my all time favourites from the point I was introduced to it. I've only really dabbled with the Original Generation series at this point (as you can see I'm working through OG2 right now), but I'm looking forward to giving Judgement and Alpha Gaiden a proper shot when I can.

As for what Fen touched on, Fire Emblem is certainly my favourite turn based strategy game. It incorporates RPG elements with you leveling up each individual unit, making them stronger as they go along. And if they fall in battle, that's it, so it really encourages you to be careful with your units. Though in the more recent titles you can turn perma-death off with the Casual mode.

They generally have an engaging story, and the gameplay that revolves around weapon triangles is simple yet challenging. Usually have pretty slick animations too, with the GBA series being my personal favourites in that regard. Though Awakening looks like it'll be awesome once it finally comes out. I'll be able to give you a solid opinion of that one when it does, sounds like they've added a bunch of new mechanics to consider. Hm.

Launch Base Act 1
Galactic Civilizations II is a turn based strategy game set in space. It's your typical expand and conquer type game. I though I'd give it a try because of the relatively high review scores and I am a big fan of turn based strategy. Unfortunately, for me it's a rather disappointing experience. One of the big selling points about the game was the AI and how it adapts. Two typical game experiences for me is that I either completely overwhelm the AI due to my vast culture and resources, or the AI completely overwhelms me; so I am either facing an easy victory or no win scenario. I never really feel sufficiently challenged and it gets boring after a while.

Birth of the Federation is also a turned based strategy set in space. It came out over a decade ago, has numerous bugs and uncompleted features and a weak AI. But I am very fond of this game and thanks to a dedicated fanbase, a lot of these issues have been addressed thanks to custom made fixes and mods.

Elder Scrolls series I think is the pinnacle of RPG games. My personal favourite is Oblivion. Nothing wrong with Skyrim, but Oblivion has a certain fantasy feel about it that I find very endearing. The sheer depth of detail in the series is staggering.

Mass Effect series is a futeristic RPG game. Doesn't quite have as much detail as the Elder scrolls series IMO. The series strength is the characters and the interactions you have with them. Each decision can have a knock on effect in subsequent games, so potentially each game you play could have different outcomes.

Is a Microprose game and a rare but very good one like Master of Orion. In fact if I remember right, a lot of it was inspired by Master of Orion. I am surprised that a youngblood like you'd know about it. Surprised but pleased.

While yes I'm well aware of this game, but I've never had my hand on the classic X-Com, just the new release. Entertaining but quite the difficult game as well. Maybe my tactics overall ain't suffice enough.

Any tips, in case you've had your past experience into the new installment.
Like what's the wisest to start off with, because most of them time, some of my best units gets swapped. Even lost one of my best unit ones, due to the smaller, brain surgeon guys, taking command of my forces.

Note that I didn't mean RP games, basically such strategy games that may involve basic RP elements such as leveling up heroes.
On other hand, it is indeed a great series.

Age of Empires 2 and its expansion pack I do enjoy, as well as Age of Empires and its expansion packs. Though Age of Mythology arguably may easily take either place for being full of awesome.

Have so much memories from AoE2, specially the expansion was so addicting.
Owned Age of Mythology as well. Yet I have one complaint concerning this game. And that was the titan units. Like so overpowered it was practically no use owning an army, because they were practically useless. And considering when playing on an island, you could never have the titans fight each other.
Yet what ruined it for me, was that you couldn't turn off the alternative to summon one, or else I'd love this game as much I do with AoE2.

We practically own just about the same games the both of us.
First of all, I own Disciples 2, also the third who was a great letdown to say the least. I loved the variations of spell that could be cast above and within combat. Yet I think they've may have pushed the so called free movement into the sequel that I never found that same appeal as I did with number 2.

Note on Heroes 5, I've been waiting for the new expansion package for Heroes 6, was meant to be released this month, but once again, delayed due to fine polishing. Considering new owners took over, I'd say already here, keep an eye out for this standalone expansion. ^_^

Warlock, basically having the same opinion on this. As for me, each of the updates have slightly improved the overall experience, yet their missing a lore, as if they wanted to be quickly done with it, and just throw out extra packages, instead of delaying it and releasing it with full content.
Rest assured, I still wanna see Hot seat mode in this game, because the AI's intelligence are so varied, it makes me utter insane. And the diplomacy options are so consistently poor, even if did receive a slight update, but I can't say I'm overly impressed by it. Also the whole spawn system is getting ridiculous. You can almost never make your self at home in any of the other worlds, because when you do arrive, you'll get ether massacred with hundreds of enemies gathering just near the gate, that'll transfer us from one world to another, and well each inhabitant island aren't no different.

However I do have a small advice for a new title you should look into.
This dude introduced me to the core elements of this game. Because in the beginning I was completely dumbstruck by how genuinely different it were from Civlization, and Warlock, for instance were each tile around your city are potential sources of income. This doesn't concern Fallen Enchantress.
It's also rather complex, but in the end, I would mention that in April this game will indeed release a standalone expansion, improving lots of game elements, but already in March there's a BETA version for it on their site.
What it involves, well fantasy and lots of customization. A good quest system, keeping you entertained with alternatives at least for a short while.
Adds combat like in Heroes/Age of Wonders. Also, the AI tends to be a bit smarter as long you increase the difficulty range. Also it has it's own lore, unit appendixes, as well, resources, improvements, artifacts/Equipment, as well other benefits of this game.
(Note on video above, it's meant as a tutorial, and he's from Australia, but he takes it thoroughly through. Each of the options, etc menus.

As what comes with the expansion, well new Monster heroes. That is a bonus, because most of them have been humans as of late. Whether it's the Empire or Kingdom races, yet you can practically recruit any unit you wish, as long you'll stretch further in the technology tree's, add encampments of various sorts of units. Even dragons. (Yeah you'd probably figured I would come to this.) Difficult accomplishment, but there's much to do in this game.

Last but not least, can create your own personal looking sovereign to the extent of available items, such as hair, etc. Another neat feature is the Map Editor, as well a few other like tile editor and something else that I haven't really gone into as much, so I can't really say much what this will include.

And if Steam has it still on sale, it's about 11 Euros right now.
Of course, I'm not sure if you have American currencies through your potential Steam, or whatever you use to get your PC games, but that's my fair bit of advice on Fallen Enchantress. Hopefully that'll be a good check out.

Dat game will make you its bitch, cause thats how it rolls. Ironically, its my favorite of the original x-com games for its design and music. Gotta love underwater themes yo. Wish more strategy/rpg games had them.

I do know Necroscope did a really awesome TFTD lets play and I had inked out a comic I wanted to color and post to represent a moment in t he game.
