If she's your best friend, even if she doesn't feel the same way about you, she'll probably understand. Some times you have to take chances, make mistakes, and get messy.

If you get hints that she wouldn't mind, ask her out. Though, like Finite said, I don't think your friendship will suffer from it. But it doesn't hurt to try.

I've never been one to take too many risks but I also hate the "What if" feeling more. Your best bet is to just go for it. If things don't go your way, don't fret.
