Well alrighty. I'm not sure why didn't i post this before but whatever. So, here's the story. A few months back, there was a virus spreading around Skype, a particularly nasty one. If you caught it, it would automatically send a message to every person on your Skype contact list, asking if "That was your skype profile pic", along with a link. The link, once you download whatever is inside it and open the file, you'll get the virus too. It doesn't sound too bad, except the fact that the virus has a lot of trojans in it that can screw your computer up. Worst of all, it was a pretty recent virus so most antiviruses didn't detect it. I happened to be one of the unlucky people that got it. After a few days i confessed to my parents. Now here's where the issues come in. My brother, happened to have another Windows XP system. With that, he installed it and got rid of the virus before it did any significant damage to the laptop. Now, this system he installed..after that was done, in only 20 minutes i noticed some problems in it. Games..didn't work. They just didn't. The 3D ones at least. Most 2D games worked perfectly, just like before but the 3D games had a lot of lag in them, and the graphics looked odd as some things had black borders around them, and things like trees looked weird and flat. Now, i doubt it's the fact that i don't have DirectX installed or my specs are not up to date. I'm gonna note that before i installed in this system, when i had the previous one, games worked incredibly well, better then i expected. I could run generally any modern game, just as long as i didn't have it on the max settings. It's only after i installed in the new system, the games refused to work. I can also prove, it's not the virus' fault. When i discovered the problem with the games not working, we tried to install in a Windows 7 system about a month later. Games worked just as good as they did before the virus hit me and i had to install in a new system. However i had to switch back to the crappy system which couldn't run 3D games because the modem didn't work on the windows 7 system for some reason... Now that i know it's the faulty system's fault, the solution is clear: I gotta buy a new Windows XP system. However, god only knows how much will take that. We're not poor, but by any standards we're not rich either. All of our money goes to bills, food, my bro and other general things you shop for. Even if my bro gets some cash, it's still not enough for a new system as considering how long it's taking so far, i presume they cost a lot. So, my question is: Does anyone know an alternate solution to my problem? Is there even an alternate way to fix this besides buying a new system? To sum it up for those who may have not paid attention, my system is absolute junk, it cannot run 3D games, they lag and objects have odd black borders around them, and i'm sure my specs and drivers are up to date. So yep. I'm eager for anyone to answer me. |

If you don't have enough money to buy a completely new system, I'm guessing you could afford a fresh copy of Windows 7. Meaning buying the disk and booting your system from the CD. Or, you can spend less on buying a new graphics card. Your OS doesn't really affect your computers performance, if you can't get 7 then XP is better than nothing or Vista. As for the virus issue, what anti-virus do you use? I personally use Microsoft Security Essentials as well as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. You could use the latter to scan the computer for any traces left by the skype virus. MSE downloads virus and spyware definitions that it uses to identify threats. |

Well, no. See, the problem here is that when i installed in a Windows 7 system, games worked really well, but the modem, the thing i use to connect to the internet refused to work. We called the owner of the company who made the modem and they said that they don't support Windows 7..for some reason. While i liked that my games worked again, i need the internet as well otherwise i'm gonna die of boredom pretty quick. I use ComboFix, which works kinda different then the other anti viruses. My brother recommended me to only use it once in a while, once in a week or a month. Upon launching it, it scans your computer and deletes any virus it detects. ComboFix however didn't help that time and didn't erase the virus. but eh, i don't truly need any recommendations anymore since i got rid of the virus by installing a new system in. What the virus did, was every once in a while it created an odd file, presumably a trojan or some other virus. It shown it in the task manager, and i found where it created the files in Disk C. I doubt the virus is there anymore, as it doesn't do that anymore and it's been nearly half a year now since i installed in the system and nothing really new happened besides games not working. Though in about a month after i'll move into a new house, my fellow mother said that she's gonna call in someone who knows his stuff on computers, so i guess that will be my chance to get the laptop all fixed and ready to play again. |

Have you tried using a different modem (made by a different company) and seeing if you get better results? Last time we bought a modem, it actually didn't work at all and we had to have it replaced, so maybe try it on another computer too (if you haven't already) to make sure it isn't the problem here. Also... having a good antivirus/antimalware is always a good idea... even if you've beat this virus in the butt, it always helps to be able to prevent new infections, not just scan to see if you already have any. | I love programming! I work at Mommatown as a programmer on sites like Vincent Martella's, Don Leslie's and IPO Boutique. When I'm not doing that I'm usually writing game mods. <3 | |

All that was.

Buy a new modem and install Windows 7, Windows XP is technically no longer officially supported by Microsoft so even if you bought a brand new high spec gaming PC, if it was running XP it won't be long before new games won't run because of your old unsupported operating system. |
