Wow it's not official yet but if true this is a bad move... I hope Sony doesn't follow suit and we already know Nintendo hasn't. It's just anti consumer. Not only that but it requires a constant internet connection... Which alienates a LOT of people not just in the US but the world.

If this is true then Microsoft has just shot themselves in the foot.
However I've heard this kind of thing confirmed and rebuked so many times I'm not really going to believe it until Microsoft unveils the system.

Sony's already filed a patent for blocking used games. Whether or not they follow through, well...

Besides, not a big fan of the used games market anyways. I don't mind selling games, but I can't buy used games and cut out a developer like that. Not unless the game is old and they're no longer making new copies.

I don't mind selling games,
If they block used games you won't be able to sell your old games after you are playing with them as they will be locked to your system.

I wouldn't really have a problem with that. It would, however, completely nullify the era of disc-based games.

Lets also take into consideration the other thing this article brings up, that every game will requires a constant internet connection.
So every company that makes a game for the Next-Box will require to run a server for that game, regardless of if it has multiplayer online or not, That's going to cost the company a heck of a lot more money to make games in an already expensive market.
And then what happens when the servers are taken down for whatever reason?
You have a game you can't play anymore because it can't connect to the Internet and that you can't sell on because its locked to your console.

They've patented a lot of stuff that has never made it to consumers. A controller that changes texture, softness, and temperature for instance or contacts that track your eyes. In this case, I really hope neither of them follow suit as it WILL be shooting themselves in the foot. As far as the patents go, it's just so they get money if someone else tries it whether they do or not. Lol @ patents...

You may not but many other people who buy used games or sell games they don't want anymore to put down on a new game will and people who want to, you know, bring their games to their friends and play with them. It wouldn't work on their friend's system. Consoles have always been about social gaming in some fashion but this would undo much of the advancement of multiplayer gaming. Plus not everyone has an internet connection or even a good one so it pretty much makes the system useless to most of the world....

That's what I was referring to when I said it would alienate disc-based games. The whole purpose of having a disk would be so that you can use it anywhere that it's compatible, so they lock-out is definitely a bad move; there's no denying that. But most of the hooplah surrounding this situation (not necessarily here, mind you) is simply the loss of the ability to purchase games second-hand; I understand the convenience, but at the end of the day the only one who profits from used games is the store you bought it from. The developers get nothing for that; selling and re-selling the same one product still counts as one sale. But hey, if you want to do that, I'm not stopping you.

As for the constant online connectivity, it's clear that Microsoft hasn't been looking towards the scorn that the PC community reaps with always-online DRM, otherwise they'd realise just how foolish that design choice is.

Let's also fast-forward a few years here, guys. How easy is it now to hit up eBay and look up some quality, old-school games? This won't happen. It's not just the 2nd hand market we're talking here guys, this'll affect the retro scene in the long run - and y'all know how big a community that can be when it wants to be.

Christmas is back again

What Microsoft is doing about their decisions is ridiculous.
I was almost leaning toward PS4, but I'd rather go with the new Valve console when that shows up.

This sounds as rediculous as that stupid SOPA act. I mean come on....Blocking used games? That just sounds unrealisitic from my stand point.

Once again, it goes to show you that we have the blind leading the blind here.

And..what's this i hear about Valve having a console?

Valve console confirmed

Well I wasn't meant to sidetrack from the actual thread's purpose, so all in all, I'm about to cancel my everlasting xbox cycle it seems, when the new one arrives.
Sure I have internet, but I still don't like that you can't even go as far, to even borrow a simple game from a friend.

Oh. My. LAWD.
This is RIDICULOUSNESS.
I don't know HOW many times I've borrowed games from my friends. If this happens: Xbox/Microsoft = [/shot]

Oh, the Steam Box? That's more a PC for the front room than an actual console, and I'm led to believe will be DL-only. Could be wrong. In any case, it's highly likely it'll be Linux based and I imagine there'll be a Valve distro available before long to accompany the new 'console'.

In fact, let's take Valve's Steam store for a moment... once I've bought a game, I have to decide there and then whether it's a gift or for myself. Once I've bought it, it remains mine. We already have a blocked second hand market for downloaded content. So don't go thinking for a second that Valve will relax on this attitude, nor getting your hopes up.
