Break out the L-word. The other L-word.
Some scattered articles of clothing lied underneath the hanging skeletons, moth-eaten and decrepit, for the most part. Though fueled by adrenaline enough not to notice upon their entrance, they were now assaulted by the horrible smell of long-decayed flesh, and sickening odours emanating like heatwaves from asphalt outwards from Schrodinger's skin. Schrodinger had very little muscle clinging to his bones like wet tissues, and as such could not assist much in Leyla's efforts to carry him; but due to his malnourishment, his weight was very easily manageable even by relatively meek individuals.

His head was hung from a sort of relieved exhaustion, though nothing of shame flickered in his face. Although most in his situation would be appalled by their own pitiful state, he seemed unconcerned with how he appeared to the girls. He managed to gather the strength to lift his head ever so slightly in the direction of Leyla's face, though he only managed to raise his gaze to her chest; again, unperturbed by such an awkward social mishap. "You...smell...nice..." he whispered, his nose no doubt very used to the hideous stench that permeated the air of this room, and much less accustomed to the pleasanter scents of a more hygienic female.

The ruckus in the corridor they had left was crawling ever closer. "Come on, let's go, alright? We'll figure things out when we're in a safer place," said Vasilyev, agitated and ever so slightly angry at Leyla's accusations of cruelty. He crossed the room to another heavy steel door, this one fitted with a keypad. He punched in a very lengthy code with remarkable speed, and the door screeched open, obviously not having been opened in a long time. He waited for Milo to do whatever quick dressing of Schrodinger she thought necessary, as well as for Leyla to carry him to the door.

Although it was by no means the fault of Schrodinger, Leyla felt rather uncomfortable being so close to the young man, with his rather modest and innocent social inclinations- she felt her face begin to go red when he accidentally glanced at her chest and commented on her more pleasant smell. Nonetheless, she helped haul him along through the door after Milo had patched him up.

The air was thick with putrid smells- the origin of which Leyla didn't even want to think about. Yet no matter where she looked, her eyes were assaulted with the sight of dead bodies and other horrific atrocities. She seeked refuge in the stone floor, making sure she did not look up.

After Milo finished going through the pile of skeletons to find something to wear for the poor man, she quickly put it on him. It was not much but it felt like the right thing to do. She made haste to look at where ever Vasilyev was leading her to this time. Whilst preparing for the worst, looking upon the dead bodies scattered around didn't surprise her at all. "You call this a safer place?" she said with a tone of disgust in her voice. She shrugged it off and pushed a few chopped off heads and limbs out of their way with her foot.

"Mind telling us what exactly your plan is?" Milo said, directed at Vasilyev - assuming he knows.

The room they had entered wasn't much better than the last, littered with unfinished and decaying chunks of human flesh, many not even gleaned from the bone yet, hanging, dripping, shriveling from what were once hands, legs, and heads.

Caught up in the smell of food and an instinctual drive to survive, Schrodinger somehow managed to find the strength to jump from Leyla and upon a severed arm, biting unglamourously into the meat. He ripped chunks out with his sharp teeth, swallowing big ones whole. He ate ravenously, devouring the entirety of the putrid, rotting meat in less than a minute. Then he jumped upon a head, biting at the nose, trying to tear it from the face.

"Beyond this door is..." Vasilyev had begun to explain his intentions, but the sounds of wild cannibalism made him spin around and stop talking. He sighed, and started over, his voice irritated at the interruption. "Beyond this door is Schrodinger's library, where he learned most of what he knows. There is a secret passageway there which leads all the way to the west wing, which is where the room I showed you is, Leyla, as well as my current study and lab. I'll secure this part of the mansion so that Dexter and Mouth cannot escape. They will be perfectly well contained until such time as I decide what to do with them. They're genetically engineered not to kill each other, so don't worry. They'll be fine."

Freed of the burden of Schrodinger's weight, Leyla didn't hesitate to open the library doors, the studious ambiance reminding her of her more carefree days at school, which were spent working away with her close friends in the comfortable, still sanctity that it had somehow represented, before her sudden departure. She tentatively breathed in the old, musty smell of decaying books, which only induced happy memories rather than contempt or disgust- it was all just how she had remembered being a student; a free spirit, before it had been snatched away from her.

In hindsight, she probably shouldn't have snuck into the science labs during lunch break to use hydrogen peroxide for more blonde streaks in her hair. All it had done was damage it and had her kicked out of her prestigious- but rather uptight- secondary school.

"This place is literally like a maze. You sure you're not secretly keeping a map on you at all times?" Said Leyla, carefully spinning a globe she had spotted on a desk, which was incredibly uniform and tidy, with her fingertips. She spun the object quickly and playfully, stopping it at random intervals to pinpoint a different location. "Hm. So another secret passageway, eh? Let's go." She stepped to the side, allowing space for Vasilyev to lead the way.

The moldy smell of old books quickly filled Milo's nostrills as Leyla opened the libary doors, certainly unpleasant but she shrugged it off. While carefully listening to Vasilyev's explanation, and waited for him to lead the way, she managed to get a hold of one of the old books scattered on the ground. As she opened the thing, a big cloud of dust appeared in front of her face. She coughed. The pages were yellow and the ink was barely readable, there were different notes written on the sides of the pages, but it looks like most of it got wiped away.

Vasilyev wasted no time in taking in the ancient library, deftly weaving between the shelves at a brisk pace, kicking up dust with each step, and scanning the spines of the books with his cold, unyielding eyes. "No map. That's a security breach waiting to happen. Though I guess security doesn't matter much with a house like mine." He shot Leyla a sly grin before quickly returning to his apparent search. "I'm sure Milo would've been cleaned up pretty quick if you hadn't've found her."

He swung around a corner, maintaining his speed and momentum as he moved on to the next aisle over. "I've lived here a long time, girl. I know it like the back of my hand. Aha!" He beckoned the girls to come nearer with a frenetic wave. The pounding against the door of their previous hidden passageway returned after the momentary pause, mixed with the shrieks of pain and roar of flame.

He noticed that Schrodinger had still yet to enter the library as he waited for the girls to rejoin him, and said, "Oh, for God's sake, get the boy!" He pointed a thin, white finger towards the door. "Mouth and Dex won't kill each other, but he's human; he's fair game."

Schrodinger still ravenously tore at the disgusting chunks of rotting flesh, clinging to them for dear life in a bestial battle for survival. He seemed not to notice that the others had not moved on, or not to care.

Leyla testily denounced the placement of the various furnishings in the library- those that almost seemed to be mocking in how they prevented her from reaching Schrodinger any faster. When she finally found him in the adjacent room, she was greeted with the half comical, half pitiful sight of the young man with several chunks of festering meat hanging from his mouth, the string-like quality making it appear as though an alien was housed between his chapped lips. "Come on, you." She said apathetically, hauling him out of the place without any hesitation, shortly before rejoining Milo and Vasilyev in the library.

Schrodinger tried to resist being yanked away from his meal, but his meagre adrenal strength finally gave way to whimpering futility. He mewled and writhed pathetically in Leyla's grasp.

Vasilyev waited for the girls and Schrodinger to catch up to him through the labyrinthine library. Once all heads were present (one whose face was specked with rotting gore), he pulled an inconspicuous volume from the shelf. It resisted being removed completely, and machinery could be heard clicking and whirring in the shelf and in the floor. Then the shelf rose, displacing a section of the row into the air, and stirring up clouds of dust. A small, dodgy lift unearthed itself underneath. Vasilyev hastened aboard, and didn't bother beckoning the girls, as he expected them to join him without question. He stared off into the distance, focusing on the sounds of combat ricocheting from the next room.

The cries and blows died down for a moment. But it was merely the eye of the storm. A loud crash harmonized with a peal of thunder outside the mansion, shaking the walls. Dexter came barreling into the library; Mouth limped after him, bleeding green from countless wounds.

Vasilyev decided to give the girls a hint, and yanked them both - with Schrodinger - into the lift, and quickly pulled a lever. The elevator squeaked down, and the cacophony of destruction enveloped above them.

The shaft was pitch-black. The rusty lift screeched against its walls, occasionally sparking enough to bring a faint orange flash to their eyes.

Finally, it opened up, flooding the lift slowly from their feet up with an eerie fluorescent light. It revealed a dank concrete hall which seemed to stretch on in both directions for miles. It was lined on the left and right with doors and lifts, each of which adorned above the frame with a number-letter designation, apparently delineating where they opened to. This far down, the fighting above was little more than a barely discernible banging.

Vasilyev disembarked and walked into the midst of the cramped corridor. He turned back and forth, pointing without much commitment, going over his mental map. Finally he decided on pointing to the right. "This way," he said, almost under his breath. He turned to his three companions, put a finger to his lips, and said, "Shh." Then he walked off briskly, expecting them to follow.
