Break out the L-word. The other L-word.
Vasilyev tapped his foot impatiently as he waited for the strange tube to completely drain. Inside was a very strange looking beast: it was a bit like a ten-foot tall fishman, scaly and finned, but without gills. Its eyes bulged off the sides of its head, making it seem as though it has three-hundred-and-sixty degree vision, aside for maybe a blind spot or two in the front and back of its head. Its giant mouth was lined by huge, flabby lips, blistered and bloodied, no doubt accidentally chewed by the monstrous teeth which hid behind, looking like multilayered shark teeth. It had huge three-toed claws for hands, and its feet were webbed and wide.

Vasilyev responded to the girls' questions in a way suggesting impatience and annoyance, as if there were much more pressing or interesting things to talk about than what they chose to. "It's one of my old labs. These are some pretty old specimens of mine. Probably almost a hundred years old now. This one's Mouth. He'll help us subdue Dex." He looked very briefly at Leyla and said, "No, there aren't any vents. Quit whining." He looked at Milo. "Anyways, who the hell are you? Barging into my house like that, not even knocking? I've half a mind to just throw you out there for Dex to eat, so he'll calm down. That's what she went to get you for, anyways." He pointed a thumb at Leyla. He chewed unconsciously on his other thumbnail as he continued tapping an arrhythmic beat upon the stained tile floor, apparently contemplating many different things deeply.

Milo rolled her eyes at the sight of the new monster, or whatever it was. Nothing made sense anymore and she didn't even want to understand it. The smell was still unbearable, which made her teary eyed again, but she shook it off. "You honestly think throwing me out will solve anything?" Milo declared, slightly annoyed. "Don't you think he'll come after you guys too, after having a piece of me? And you're supposed to be the smart one here..." She mumbled quietly. She shook her head, didn't think acting like this will help in this situation.

"Anyway, I'm Milo." Suddenly trying to change the mood, the girl acted cheerful instead of serious -- which didn't last very long due to her annoyance rising again. Why does he even bother? Don't we have worse things we have to deal with? Ugh.

"It was storming outside and I needed a place to hide. I honestly couldn't tell there were crazy monsters that try to brutally murder you in this mansion, or else I would have stayed the hell away from here." She said sarcastically, trying to stay calm -- but smirked a little, hoping they wouldn't take her seriously.

Leyla looked rather disapprovingly at this second beast, her hand still cupped over her mouth and nose. "Ew." She said, the sound of her voice muffled slightly by edge of her jumper sleeve. "That one looks more humanoid, but weirder somehow." Turning to Milo, she softened, and although the others couldn't see it, the corners of her mouth twitched into a smile. "And don't worry about that. I know how bad the weather can be this time of year." Testing the air, she took some shallow breaths, and added, "Although admittedly, this house wouldn't have been my first choice to seek shelter in."

The stench that had originally tainted the air seemed seemed to have dispersed elsewhere, and Leyla finally found the courage to retreat from her corner and walked towards the drain in which "Mouth" was encased, in order to get a better look. "God, it just looks worse up close." She mused, raising her eyebrows.

"Yeah. The hell's a little thing like you doing, just walking around in the rain in a place like this, anyways? You know what, I don't care." As soon as he punctuated his sentence, a green light above Mouth's tube lit, and the glass retreated from the front to the back, exposing Mouth to the open air. Its fishy eyes opened on sideways eyelids, looking around the room independently of one another.

"Good morning, Sunshine," said Vasilyev to Mouth warmly. "Dexter's acting up again, and I'm pulling you out for a little extra muscle in order to detain him. Think you're up to it?"

Mouth's flabby lips flopped open, further revealing its hundreds of razor sharp teeth. It pushed out a slimy hiss that almost sounded like a "yes;" or, at least, something resembling an affirmative.

"Good." Vasilyev patted Mouth's wet, scaly back. "Come on, then. Let's go around to get the jump on Dex." Mouth nodded its head with the uncertain wobble of one to whom it is an alien gesture, its wrinkled neck stretching and compressing according to the movement. Then it stepped out of its hibernation chamber, its damp, platform-like platypus feet slapping against the linoleum floor.

Vasilyev led the big monster, as well as the girls, to a cabinet in the back of the lab, covered in dust. He flung wide open the doors, revealing a dark passageway, no doubt one of many secret halls in this labyrinth of a mansion. Vasilyev grabbed an unlit torch from its sconce just on the inside of the entrance, and held it up to Mouth's lips without turning his head from the blackness of the hidden path. Mouth pursed his lips, and from it spewed a brief jet of blue flame, which lit the torch and several metres of the secret way. In that brief moment of brilliance, the girls could see many human bones scattered across the dirt floor. Then the light dimmed as the flamethrower dissipated, and all that was left was the faint, barely illuminating glow of the torch. Vasilyev kept going, making sure not to step on any skulls; Mouth stepped on one upon his first long stride, crushing it beneath his huge foot.

Ensuring she kept her distance from Mouth, Leyla trailed along behind the party, trying to keep her balance on the uneven floor of skulls by leaning on the wall. Due to the impracticality of her shoes, her ankles occasionally buckled, causing searing pain, and she winced. The path was dark and dank, only partially illuminated by the rather deplorable flickering flame, not offering much in terms of determining what exactly lay ahead. It was only the girl's curiousity, really, that inexplicably kept her moving; for she was tired and fed up. Although she had to admit that the possibility of bearing witness to a Godzilla-esque battle to the death between the two beasts did strike her as intriguing.

"So you're going to let this thing loose on Dex, huh?" Inquired Leyla, increasing her pace slightly so she could catch up with the group.

The sound of cracking skulls didn't scare Milo anymore. Though, she did want to hold onto something while walking through this passage, afraid she would slip and fall onto something even more revolting as a skull. She couldn't particularly look around as it was too dark, so she had to rely on Vasilyev's vague figure before her and follow his footsteps.

While concentrating on the ground, Milo didn't quite trust the whole situation and turned around to look behind her. A loud bang happened, which startled the three. Mouth let out a ridiculous noise which gave Milo a funny look on her face but she knew it wasn't the time to laugh. It seemed like the massive door finally broke down. Looking upon the passage, there was bright light shining through and you could clearly recognize the silhouette of the beast that tried to choke her a few moments ago. Though, the monster was too dense to know where he was or what to do. Surprisingly enough, he just stands there, perplexed and messy.

Suddenly the passageway felt cramped, as Dexter let out a cry of distress and Milo knew it was time to get going - not completely sure whether to be to be in a hurry or to take it slow without trying to make any suspicious noises.

The crash made Vasilyev freeze instantly, and the unperturbed Mouth almost ran over him. He spun around and moved his head so as to see around Mouth's hugeness in the crowded corridor. He watched Dexter come into the room, apparently not noticing the dark hallway just yet.

"Girls," he whispered, "let Mouth by you, then run for the other end." He turned to Mouth and gave him a quiet slap on the shoulder. "Go get him, champ."

Mouth gave the funny little nod again, and attempted to squeeze past the two girls with his slimy body. Once he got by, he broke into an awkward sprint, his huge webbed feet plopping down the passageway, crushing skulls and making a high-pitched, rubbery shriek at Dex. Vasilyev did not move, only allowing the girls past him.

At first, Leyla rushed forward, the skulls cracking underneath her feet in her haste- she had no concern for anyone else's safety as she stumbled blindly towards the other end of the narrow corridor. She began to feel imminent claustrophobia; although she hadn't noticed before, it may have been because of the new danger that was present.

After a while of pressing forward with little hesitation, Leyla began to notice that she was falling short of breath. She stopped for a little while, using the opportunity to wait for Milo, and hoped that Vasilyev wouldn't be far behind. It soon became evident that the two beasts had finally initiated in combat, as the sound of pained, unearthly screeches rocketed down the corridor, causing Leyla to shiver in a bout of apprehension.

Shortly thereafter, Milo noticed that Leyla was having trouble getting by. "Are you alright?" She asked, having an overly concerned look on her face. "Let's hurry." She looked behind her to get a glimpse of the action, but figured it was best to be safe for now, so she made a run for it - often looking behind her to see how the others were doing, making sure they were fine. The end was near, and she steadily reached it while panting heavily. A feeling of relief filled her whole body, and thus she waited there for the others to arrive.

Though Leyla and Milo waited for him, Vasilyev never caught up. In the distance, the vague silhouette of the madman, created by his torch, still quivered in the same place where they had left him. He seemed enthralled as he watched, as best he could from this angle, his two creations duke it out.

From their point on the opposite side of the tunnel, Milo and Leyla could make out even less of the action than Vasilyev could, occasionally hearing the horrible shrieks and clangs and squishes of combat, lit only by occasional waves of light which were accompanied by a terrifying siren echoing throughout the cavern, and the following pathetic yelps as if from a dog being beaten.

The scene of fire, blood and anguish unfolding behind seemed to hold connotations of the depths of hell, the now heavily stirring flame in the torch emphasising the ferocity of the two beasts. And in the midst of it; the man who had acted as the almighty creator- Leyla watched him with intent curiousity as he seemed utterly mesmerised by the concept of his creations battle to the death. She felt torn, and was annoyed as she realised that this wasn't the first time she had been put in the situation. "This keeps happening," Leyla muttered with some degree of annoyance, "I'm sorry, Milo, I'm just going to--"

She crouched, her hands browsing the floor for a sizeable skull, which she then threw in Vasilyev's general direction, in order to grab his attention. It caused some disturbances in the arrangement of the other skulls on the floor on its journey over. "Hey, you! Fancy caring about your own safety rather than your stupid experiments?" She quiped, but she daren't walk any closer towards the chaos.

"Are you crazy?" Milo yelped helpless. She lost her balance for a second and wavered around, feeling a bit dizzy. Quickly she grabbed onto a railing attached on the wall to make her feel stable. It was broken, a part of it fell off upon grabbing it. The girl couldn't make sense out of it anymore and tried to sit down, not even caring about the filthiness around her. Breathing heavily, she reached the ground and let out a sigh of relief. For a moment, time went by very slowly. At that very instant she put her head between her hands and murmured something about being quiet. It felt like she was losing grip of herself. She did not dare to look at the scene as she knew it horrible, was too afraid to move.

The skull landing near his feet finally snapped Vasilyev out of his wonderment. He turned his head around, and first saw a crouched Leyla looking at him with frustration on her face. He didn't much care, so he turned his head back to the action. But before he fully faced the battle scene again, his eyes caught hold of the sight of Milo lying on the floor of skulls, mumbling and clutching her head.

He took in one last good look at the fight unraveling before him, and then turned around. "What are you doing? Get a move on, you idiots!" He ran towards both of the girls, picked them up to their feet, and pulled them along by their hands to the end of the corridor.

After they emerged from the dark hallway, Vasilyev thrust the two girls into the room, quickly spinning around to close the heavy steel door, and securing it by turning a valve.

He spun around to examine the room, unfamiliar with this corner of the mansion due to prolonged absence from it.

"Oh," he said.

The room's walls were adorned by human skeletons. In a corner of the room, a young man, perhaps seventeen, barely clothed, crouched in the corner, his head bowed in sleep or deep meditation. At the sound of entry, his head slowly rose to look at the newcomers to what was clearly his domain. His eyes were wild but tired, with bags hanging like chandeliers beneath them. He looked like perhaps he would be handsome, if he weren't so disheveled and unkempt. His hair was a rat's nest.

But the worst part was his mouth, which was ringed by dark congealed blood.

He looked emptily across the room at Vasilyev, vague recognition stirring in his eyes. He twisted his mouth as if trying to open it to speak. Finally, he managed to get out in a raspy, painful voice, "D-...din...ner?" He looked at Leyla and Milo.

"N...no," Vasilyev finally said, his voice letting go of his usual arrogant and rude tone and demeanor, his face blank with horrified shock.

The young man slowly raised an arm to point at the skeleton on the wall closest to him. There seemed to be a bloody wetness to it. "All...out..." he managed to rasp. "Hungry..."

"I...I'll get you something soon. Come with us, Schrodinger." Vasilyev gestured for the young man to rise. The young man tried to stand, but collapsed before he could manage to get one foot on the ground. Vasilyev sighed, a sound with tones of absolute sadness. "Girls, could you please help him up?"

"Whoa." Leyla crouched and propped the young man up against her shoulder, beginning to slowly lift him from the ground. "Poor guy." She didn't think she was capable of aiding the young man up, but he was surprisingly light. But upon looking deep into his pale, gaunt face, she realised that he mustn't have had a sizeable meal in a long while, his ribs digging into her waist ever so slightly. She scowled at Vasilyev, as her mind burned with the thought of all the suffering he had caused to all the people and experiments that they had encountered thus far.

"Maybe you should chop off a couple of your fingers and feed them to Schrodinger, Vasilyev," Leyla said, her voice soft but there was steel behind it. "I think you owe it to him, after how poorly he's been treated." Her body was thrust forward from the extra load, and she was face to face with Vasilyev, unintentionally making her appear more intimidating. However, she was unable to maintain her glare into his cold, unforgiving eyes and nodded towards the man on her shoulder. "If not, what can we do for him?"

"I don't suppose you have some edible food up in here?" Milo whispered softly, not trying to scare the guy with her voice. She widened her eyes to the young man and took a good look, feeling bad for the guy. The thing she noticed at first where his hands, his nails were so filthy and unclean, you could count his bones too. She sighed and turned around, started looking for some clothing to give some shelter for the poor man, seeing as there wasn't much to do for him.
