Talk about Sonic games that you think aren't neccesarily terrible, but get too much attention here.

Personally, I find Sonic Adventure 2, the Rush Seires, and the Rivals series overrated. They just don't appeal to me much. :P
Gonna dropkick it.

Out of all the 3D Sonic games I've played, SA2 is pretty much my least favorite. I don't hate it, but there isn't anything I particularity love about it, aside from the music. I mean, the speed stages are fun but the treasure-hunting levels can be frustrating and the shooting stages tend to be monotonous at times. The story's good, but it certainly isn't my favorite. And there basically isn't anything I really find all that great about it.
Pretty much this.

I mean, if Tails dies in his mech, he should be able to get out and fight on his own.

Not to mention, I expected adventure fields, and there were none.

SA2, and i'll tell you why.

Now don't get me wrong this is one of my favorite sonic games, one big reason the chaos. The reason tho that I feel it is praised so much is because the next BIG sonic game I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, was sonic 06'. At first thought to be Sonic Adventure 3. While I personally thought Sonic 06' was bad but good,(new system, new game, new way of playing I think it gets to much crap) and since MOST non sonic fans and even some sonic fan thought it was just complete crap.

I also think Sonic 06' is overrated in the wrong way. It's overrated because all people can see in the game are its flaws, and it seems like alot of people on this forum watch gamegrumps, and if you've watched the sonic 06' episodes, all they do is hate on the flaws, you rarely if ever hear anything positive about the game.

I don't SA2 is overrated at all. It adds good diversity and even I don't like the hunting or robot parts that much. But it's still an amazing game with one of the best storyline and dialogue in Sonic games currently. Recent Sonic games, like Colors, had colorful dialogue but felt it was TOO childish. I don't wanna feel like I'm six years old when I play the game.
Although I agree with you here with the diversity and the dialogue, I think that it is overrated. Now as I said, I love the game, but people make it out to be a lot better than it is, and I'm more talking gameplay wise by the way, the story and all is still brilliant.

In terms of Colors, I think it is brilliant. I don't think it is overatted because the game is just what I want in a Sonic game, it isn't too serious, Eggman returns as the main antagonist and final boss, the gameplay and controls is better than previous installments, and even though the dialogue is a bit childish, I enjoyed it. The corny puns were slightly amusing, and it just suits Sonic's character in my opinion.

Unfortunately, the target audience of the Sonic series will always be younger children. We've all just been fans since we were around the target age.

Sonic Adventure 2 was a good game, yes, but it is easily the most overrated game in the franchise. I feel like most of the gamers in the Sonic fanbase were first introduced into the series around the time when Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were released. Games that are sentimental to someone will always be the greatest. This issue is also the cause of the most annoying complaint and tendency to ignore and disagree with the change SEGA and Sonic Team are trying to do. Everyone compares the new gameplay to the Adventure gameplay, and that bothers me to no end. Sure, the game was good fun, and I played it when I was very young, but I like the direction Sonic is going.

I feel like most of the fanbase needs to realize that the older you get, the cornier and the cheesier Sonic games will seem. I embrace it though. It gives you a reason to look back at the simpler years.

This isn't the case for me, as I was introduced, or at least pulled in, by Sonic Heroes.

Yet, I think Sonic Adventure 2 is one of the best Sonic games, being topped only by Sonic Colours and possibly Sonic Battle, although the second is something I'm more tentative about.

What really makes SA2, for me, is the story. Why? Shadow. He is literally the only character in the series with any real depth, and he actually has a backstory. Not simply a backstory, however, but in fact a very good backstory. He is what ultimately made the experience most worthwhile, and is perhaps the reason the fans clamor for more serious storyline. I mean, looking at his backstory proves that Sega knows how to do serious well. If more proof is needed, I point to the plot of Sonic Battle, with its terribly tragic ending.

I will grant, however, that SA2 is over-praised in some respects. It isn't perfect by any means, and it is fair to regard it as overrated, if only moderately so.

Funny you should mention the Rivals games. I only own Sonic Rivals for the PSP, and I enjoyed it quite a bit (enough to get all of those stupid cards for no unlocks >:( ). But overall that game just falls flat in so many areas.

The music is bland and forgettable, the gameplay is extremely easy and tedious, and the game has almost no content what so ever and does not feel worth the price of admission at all!

As for Adventures, I do not know. I plan on picking up a Dreamcast this weekend at the local Flea Market, and if I see Adventures 1 or 2 I am definently picking it up!

I have not played the Rush games either, but since I own a DS I am keeping an eye out!

You really should pick them up. The adventure games are brilliant, despite the fact that I think SA2 is a bit overrated, it is still awesome and I love it, especially the Sonic/Shadow levels. Sonic Rush is also awesome, it is very fast-paced and fun, the levels are cool, and the music and boss fights are pretty badass.

I agree with Rivals being overrated as well, I never owned it (or a psp for that matter) but I have played it, didn't impress too much.

I would have to say the classic sonic games are over rated. It has almost no stroy line and is confusing to foolow and I hate the 'specail levels' they made them too difficult.

I just want to defend my fellow Sonic 1, 2 and 3 here.

Well, there is actually a storyline, in the early 90's however it was still a period of time when the storyline was explained in the manual. The story was just Eggman capturing animals and using them for slaves and Sonic's out to rescue them. It was simple. You don't need a storyline to like a game..well, with some exceptions to Mario for me at least.

And they made the 'specail levels" difficult, because for christ sakes, you're getting Super/Hyper Sonic here upon beating them all. He's invincible, has increased speed and as long as you're fast, he can beat levels in ridiculous short amounts of time. You can't just earn something like that on a one single special stage where you collect about 10 rings to win, you gotta earn it because it makes levels a snap and no challenge at all, guranteed you got enough rings until the end of the stage. There's no fun when you earned Super Sonic in the first two zones, you get to feel the true satisfaction of earning something powerful as that by beating all the special stages yourself.

Though i'll admit that Sonic 3 receives an unnaturally a lot of praise. I mean, it's a good game, it really is, i just don't get why it happened to be the one to take so many people's hearts like that.

From what I can tell, Sonic 3 & Knuckles is the biggest game in the entire series. I have also listened to the music, and I can agree with Sonic 3 fans in that it has the best soundtrack. As for gameplay, it had some awesome special stages (I have played them and they are my favorite) and the game was the most polished in terms of gameplay. Plus you get 3 different characters, each with a Super form and Sonic has his Hyper form on top of that!

I still think Colors is the best, and again I have only played the sonic 3 special stages, but from watching a few in-depth reviews this is why I think the game is so loved compared to the other Genesis titles.

I know it is your opinion, but I have to disagree with you 100%. The classic games are by far the best in the series. It has a story but the game doesn't express it because they're old; it is explained in the manual. It definiftly not confusing; it is extrememly basic in comparison to the other games. The special stages need to be hard - you get Super Sonic after all, and it makes the game more challenging which is good, as later games are too easy. The gameplay certainly is brilliant, too.

My point is, the story is basic, and if it was bad or non-existent it wouldn't affect the game at all, its still amazing.

I found the Rush series, Adventure, CD, and Colors to be overrated. Don't get me wrong, though. These games were fun, but not as fun as to be the greatest Sonic game in my opinion. :D

I found Sonic 06 to be underrated a tiny bit. I had fun with the Silver levels (but not the open world segments), but that's about it. XD

I love Sonic 3 and Knuckles including CD. :P Anyway I think the most overrated games in the series are Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 16-bit. I love the classic games more, however I feel that Sonic 2 is a bit overrated. Don't get me wrong I love both Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic 2 but in most cases many people tend to talk about these games more, when they both have their flaws. But that's just my opinion of course. ;)

Rivals 2 was much better but I don't get this thread... Many people are saying games that are hated on are overrated. Overrated means games that got lots of praise but didn't deserve it. Sonic '06 and Sonic Rivals aren't overrated because most people didn't like them anyway. I did, but I'm a huge Sonic fan.

Sonic Adventure 2, definitely is overrated if you don't think much of it though. Most people love it and it had huge ratings by the critics too.

For me? I find Sonic 2 to be the most overrated. It was my first Sonic game and first game ever when I was 5 and I have a special place in my heart for it because of that but Sonic 3 & Knuckles was just a better game to me so when people say Sonic 2 is better I just don't agree.
