Marble Garden Act 1
A CG sonic fan film was released today by a guy called Eddie Lebron:

Quote:

"Sonic" is a non-profit 10-20 minute short fan film based on the "Sonic the Hedgehog" video game franchise that will be available free to download and watch. This short film will implement various elements of the Sonic mythology ranging from the cartoons, comics, and, most importantly, the video games. The film will be a live action piece mainly focusing on the first 3 SEGA Genesis games of the series; in terms of tone, action, and plot. The film will be shot over the course of Fall/Winter 2010 with selective days in early 2011. The shoot will be a 6 day venture at various locations in various conditions. The 5 day shoot will also include special effects photography and aerial filming. There is no formal release date but we hope to have the final product premiere at the 2011 ScrewAttack Gaming Convention and to go online shortly after; however this is not a promise or a guarantee. The film's release will be announced upon completion of the film.

The character of "Sonic the Hedgehog" will be a complete CGI character and the film will be a hybrid of both live action and completely computer generated environments and action sequences. Various familiar enemies from the franchise will be featured and the CGI Sonic has been designed to be as faithful to his original design as possible while adding subtle touches to make the character more detailed.

The film could easily go in a series of directions; to being as dark and realistic as "The Dark Knight" or as lighthearted and colorful as "Speed Racer". Neither is our intention. We want to go in the direction of "Raiders of the Lost Ark", "Die Hard", or any Spielberg/Abrams action picture film. The goal is to have a fast paced, action adventure film that takes itself seriously yet is willing to have fun without being cheesy or corny. We want this fan film to capture a fun and excitement that the original Genesis series made us feel and still make us free. There's no denying that those games still hold up to this very day.

Our goal is to make a live action Sonic film that can work while being extremely entertaining and enjoyable to all fans. We want to share our take and vision of Sonic's world with other fans. As huge Sonic fans, we want to make a film that is faithful to the character of Sonic while creating a story that fits with who he is and what is goals are. The film is being made as a short that could lead into a series of shorts of even a feature film but as of now, we just want to make one amazing short film that does justice to Sonic the Hedgehog,

Jaleel White as the Voice of "Sonic"
As of early October, we have officially signed Jaleel White to voice to do the voice of the titular character, "Sonic the Hedgehog". Jaleel White first entered the public eye as Steve Urkel in the TV sitcom. "Family Matters" and since then, he has been in various feature films and has also entered voice acting. One of his most popular voice acting roles was as Sonic the Hedgehog in various cartoon adaptations. He is widely known by fans as THE voice of Sonic; as we do. Thus, we want JaleelŐs involvement on this.

We firmly believe that to make the project more legit and truth to our fandom, his involvement is key. We are extremely happy to have him involved and thank him and his representatives for being supportive and helpful.

About the Director:
Eddie Lebron started film directing as a full blown career in 2006 after nearly 10 years of making various home movies ranging from all genres. His first feature; "Ghostbusters: Generation", was a fan film rendition of what "Ghostbusters 3" could be. The film has remained unreleased but from the experience, Eddie developed his skill and craft in all areas of film making. After enrolling into The School of Visual Arts, Eddie took on larger endeavors in an effort to get more experience. He currently works throughout the east coast film industry; primarily in New York City as a cinematographer and camera/editorial technician. He is mostly known for his feature length "MegaMan" fan film which has received over 430,000 views as of October 2010 (since it's May 7th release). Aside from fan films, many of Eddie's original films have seen success on the festival circuit and have received critical acclaim ranging from fellow film makers to industry professional. "Sonic" marks his last fan film and one of many dream fan films he has had since youth. Eddie Lebron is an avid retro gamer who enjoys gaming on his down time; especially classics. Coincidentally, Sonic 3 and Knuckles has been his favorite video game since 1995 (although he is also a hardcore MegaMan fan).

Eddie is current one of three partners of the production company "SollarSystems Studios", along with his producers David and Daniel Horowitz.

Might want to fix your youtube link.

But yeah, I saw this yesterday. Still debating whether this is so bad, it's good; or so good, it's bad.

Jaleel White? I don't think that's a good choice for a more Raiders of the Lost Ark or Die Hard feel. But that's just me...

I'm not sure I'll watch it. I'm starting to prefer video games over movies, and I was never huge on the idea of turning video games into movies.

Here is a fix.
You need the address that is displayed in the URL bar, not the one Youtube gives you under the video.

The most important meal of the day
My big cousin told me about it the day before yesterday and I got really excited. I watched it last night and I was thoroughly entertained. There were obviously a few mistakes here and there but come on, it's not Hollywood. I think they did a pretty darn good job, all things considered. I do like the choice for Jaleel White however I do not like the way he executed his performance. Could've been better. And Sonic's lack of speed was especially apparent in the Green Hill Zone. I was hoping it'd be longer, seeing as this took months to make, but since I just found out about it 2 days ago, I guess I can't really complain. Eggman was... well he was too serious for me. And he looked and sounded really really old. Like how old is Eggman in the games? Cus he looked and sounded like he was pushing 60. That can't be right, right? In the games and even the shows and comics, Eggman always has his "MUWHAHAHA I'M BLATANTLY EVIL" attitude... Like he's up to no good but in a showy way. And he always has a slight comical air around him, at least in my opinion. Even in the more "serious" games he never was completely 100% serious (at least he didn't come off as serious). And this Eggman in the movie was just... Man he needed to get the stick out of his butt, plain and simple.

I still can't use this.

This short was thoroughly awful from it's very foundation as a film.

Most of the set-up is shoehorned into news reports instead of utilizing the actual nature of film and actually being shown. What little we see of Robotnik's invasion is poorly handled and doesn't measure up to the bloody descriptions in these reports; Egg Carriers and robots appear and proceed to act passive, nor do the people in the city act befit of a populous being invaded. This is an awful, awful opening. And if they didn't have the graphical means to show this (after all, whenever the E-100 robots land in the forest, leaves don't kick up, so I doubt they could've done an exploding city or Mobian genocide), visually there could have been ways around it. Forgoing the city parts altogether and having some dirty, dog-tired, and terrified citizens stranded in the forest with GUN trying to protect them would have been a better idea.

GUN acts really stupid. No word from the news reports or any visual indication that they're actually helping the city, so for all we know they pretty much just let that metropolis burn. This one soldier is getting tossed around and not engaging with the robots asking him about Sonic's presence, which we would be fair to assume he doesn't know about, because everyone's always amazed to see Sonic. If this is the case, why hasn't he told them anything? Why is he just sitting there like an idiot? And where did Robotnik get that one soldier he's torturing from? And why would you send such a small battalion of people into the conquered woods alone with such meager weaponry? Why are two of them doing nothing but cowering? Why are they arguing about Sonic when he just saved them?

Why is Sonic in this for only about five minutes? What exactly is he doing the entire time his island is getting jacked up? If there's one thing that's consistent about Sonic in all of his incarnations, it's that he's an impatient little bugger and would hardly stand around while all of his friends are being murdered in cold blood, so why does he only show up at a few times to kill a few robots? We know he's definitely around as indicated by the news reports asking about this mysterious "BlooBler," but considering Robotnik thoroughly handed the island its own bunghole several times over, his presence is thoroughly missed, and his demeanor doesn't seem befitting of one who's friends died either.

Why is an alright-looking CGI Green Hill Zone tacked onto this totally realistic deciduous forest? We never see or hear about it or any other zones because the movie pretty much establishes it's own version of South Island as pretty damn close to our reality, sans Robotnik, robots, and Sonic. Everything else is perfectly real, so why is it thrown in there? To try and clunkily set this film as a prequel to the games? If that is the case, why in the world is Knuckles there? And why does he not have his trademark gloves?

I can go on and on about the weird story decisions, but it all comes down to a complete ineptitude at script-writing and utilizing the medium properly. Things happen for no reason, stuff that happens never pays off in any meaningful way, people do not act in a sensible manner. It's just a bunch of shots thrown together. And the pacing and staging isn't any better either.

This is to say nothing of the less-than-stellar CGI either. Leaves not kicking up when the robots land is only one issue of many. Sonic's model and rigging is awful; bad lip-syncing, clipping, and reversed normals to be found all around. The television screens on the building are not to perspective. The lighting is inconsistent from the models and the environment, and the animation's very slow and clunky.

It being a fan film is no excuse. I've seen one-minute limited animated shorts made by a single nobody in less time for free that were much better and moved me in some way. This shit had multiple people and donations behind it. No excuses whatsoever.

Yeah that really confused me too, and I didn't get it until they like rearranged the name. I didn't like Eggman AT ALL. For all the reasons I listed before, and because his mustache is WAY TOO SMALL! lol like that seriously made me mad.

Idk I guess it needs some refining but it's better than Eddie Lebron's other movies.

And Knuckles did have his gloves? I thought he did...

He has normal gloves with fingers. Even if we all agree Knuckles has fingers under his boxing gloves, there was still no reason to go off-model with what is the most defining feature of the character and not do the boxing gloves. It's even stupider when you know that a boxing glove would be a hell of a lot easier to model and rig.

Hm, I guess I just wasn't paying attention to his hands 'cause I honestly didn't even notice. That kinda sucks. He looks a lot better than Sonic, at least, from what you can tell from behind. I don't really like how Sonic looks, his head looks kinda blocky and his fur is all nappy and his mouth looks really weird.

I feel like this whole movie could've been one long trailer, and the actual movie could've been 10 x's better.

Oh don't worry, I stopped watching. And I had noticed your post; kinda why I didn't say much myself. No point when you've savaged it enough to not only keep your reputation alive but enhance it.

Christmas is back again

As much it's bad, I sorta found it vaguely entertaining. Though by all means, I've seen better fan-films, but this is probably a group who hasn't looked up Sonic's franchise enough.

And considering Kintobor, that's probably made up. Seen as I've never heard him referenced as that.

Ha Ha! Note to the NC and AVGN. Yet none really made much an impact.

The only good thing about this is that Egoraptor, AVGN, TGWTG and Brentalfloss are in it.
