Steam is a digital distribution, digital rights management, multiplayer and communications platform developed by Valve Corporation. It is used to distribute games and related media online, from small independent developers to larger software houses - Wikipedia

I've never had any issues with Steam before and after the release of the Steam Workshop. But, on November the 20th, Steam announced that Garry Newman - the creator of the sandbox game Garry's Mod, would be porting his game to the Steam Workshop following the release of Garry's Mod 13.

Many other games had ported to the Steam Workshop following its release on October 13 2011. but, the problem I had with Garry's Mod being ported to it, was not that I thought it was bad it was replacing the previous way of installing custom content, but that it was not making much of a difference.

Either Garry Newman hasn't noticed - or everyone is too scared to point it out because they know Garry will solve the, problem. You are still able to install custom content the exact same way without errors. Just because the Steam Workshop exists, doesn't mean that you have to switch.

Okay, I know what you're thinking. "But, the Steam Workshop is a much easier and faster way to get custom content!" The thing is, it really doesn't matter how faster or easier it is to get the content.

You see, on http://www.garrysmod.org/ you are able to download content for previous versions of Garry's Mod. Such as version 10 and 9. But, the owners of the content do not always, as proven to date, republish their work onto the Steam Workshop, so other users have to do it. but, actually, they don't. Because if they didn't have their faces practically stuffed into the Steam Workshop system, they'd realise that you can install custom content the same way that you previously could.

Also, people already know that you can make custom content you've installed on previous versions work on the newest simply by changing the name of a file. I'm in shock nobody has discovered that you do not in fact have to work with the current system only.

Rumours claim that Garry Newman was forced by Valve themselves to port to the Steam Workshop for advertisement reasons, when the question is brought up to Garry from fans on Twitter or his blog, he doesn't respond. This points to the fact he might not agree with the system and had secretly added this feature to allow people to use it both ways.

Now, before I finish and get a ton of people asking how I managed to use it the previous way, I should point out that if you don't know how to do it the previous way, you haven't done it the previous way.
