The late afternoon sun cast its rays languidly onto King Frederick Airfield below, dipping the city-state of New Mobotropolis into shadow. The airfield was unique, owing to both a need for space and the advantage of advanced city planning. Though the two visible runways were short, inertial dampers were built in, acting as a catapult for outgoing craft, and a buffer for incoming craft, effectively reducing the need to occupy space within the city by tarmac and paint. The outgoing runway also sported a launch ramp, further optimizing the takeoff of outgoing craft. The Airfield's concourse towered over the west end of the field, sitting right over the elevators responsible for bringing aircraft in and out of the underground hangar bays. Currently, the outgoing elevator was occupied by a sleek black aircraft, around which the Freedom Fighters - the special ops team of the city’s Republic of Acorn - and their allies, the Chaotix, mulled about, completing their preparations for the upcoming mission. True to form and fashionably late, Sonic the Hedgehog strode into the hangar area, a brown backpack strapped to his back. "So, we almost ready to go?" "Yes we are, no thanks to your participation," Princess Sally called from a nearby computer console. "Aw come on, Sal, don't be like that," Sonic replied, holding up his hands in mock defense. "I had things to do." "Well, it's not like you were really needed, Sonic," Tails piped in. "Antoine, Rotor and myself took care of the FFS, and everyone else helped when they could. There really wasn't more you could have done." Ignoring the smug look that Sonic shot her way, Sally finished her task with a flourish, then detached a thin, compact computer from the right side of the console. She opened it and started typing on keys. "Nicole, can you verify the wireless connection to your chassis?” An icon of Nicole's face appeared on the compact computer. "Verified, Sally. The signal is clear, and I anticipate being able to get a fairly strong connection out to New Megaopolis." "Good." Sally shut the compact, and let it hang from her shoulder with a strap attached to its outer casing. Making sure it was secure against her waist, she beckoned to a sleek, black and white furred cat dressed in a business suit. "Go ahead and get started, Hershey. Tails, how's the ship coming?" "Ready to go, Sally!" "How about the explosives?" "The explosives are all loaded up, too," Vector replied. "Alright. Communications?" Julie-su, a partially cybernetic pink echidna, clasped her hands behind her back nearby. "I've got the frequency encryption established, and the headsets are ready," she stated in a brusque, business-like manner. "Good, thank you." Sally turned to the pretty, demure dhole female standing close by. "Now before we start, I just wanted to personally thank you for joining us on this mission. I realize it was short notice, but thank you nonetheless." |

"All well," the dhole replied, tail wagging. She turned her smile from the princess to the black jet sitting on the tarmac. "After all, I volunteered on almost-shorter notice." Her hands were behind her back, and she slowly twisted on a heel to observe the scene around her. Freedom fighters moved everywhere; faces and figures that, until a few hours prior, she's only seen from a far, passing through the marketplace where she sold her wares. Less than half a day ago, she'd not ventured much farther into New Metropolis than that square and the ring pool. "I should be thanking you, to be honest," she continued, turning back to the chipmunk. Her tail curled and uncurled repeatedly. "It's not everyday one gets the chance to save the world. Is there anything I can help with before we take off?" "And when do we take off?" Nero sat behind his master, his skull-face turned to Sally with the utmost severity. |

Sally smiled back at the young mercenary. "Sierra, was it? Thank you for the offer, but the rest of the boys took care of it. We frankly weren't expecting anyone like you to come along.
Sally made a doubletake at the slight canine behind Sierra. "Oh my! ...You talk! Ah, well, we'll be taking off shortly. I just have a bit of a mission briefing to go through." Looking up at Sierra, she added, "Do please bear with me, and we'll be off before long." Turning around, she addressed the female cat typing away at the computer console. "Are you ready to begin, Hershey?" "Absolutely, Princess." "Excellent." Raising her voice, Sally called out, "Could everyone gather round, please?" The compatriots stopped their milling about and crowded into an informal semi-circle around the princess. "First off, I do apologize for the extremely short notice of this mission, but that recent incident with Enerjak gave us a golden opportunity, and we would do well to make the most of it." "Don't bother apologizin', Sally," Vector the Crocodile said, crossing his arms over his scaled chest. "As long as we've all been fighting Eggman, a mission on short notice is better than not making sure we press our advantages." Sally nodded. "Well said. Well, Hershey, whenever you're ready." Hershey tapped a few keys, and a satellite image of New Megaopolis appeared on a holographic projector, which promptly zoomed in on the northwest section of the city. "Right here," Sally continued, pointing at a part of the zoomed in picture, "Is what remains of the Egg Fleet Dockyards. Nicole was able to pick up thermal and electronic signatures from three operational docking pylons, which are currently supporting what reinforcements Eggman was able to pull in from his sub-bosses to date. We've also seen signs of Egg Pawns moving through the Egg Fleet wreckage. We think that they're trying to salvage components in order to rush construction on additional ships. "Our mission tonight," Sally said, leaning on the computer console, "Is the complete destruction of these docking pylons. Without the Dockyards, Dr. Eggman will be forced to send his Egg Fleet remnants back to his sub-bosses, keeping what remains of his forces weak and decentralized. In addition, we are to gather as much information as we can about the estimated damage to his infrastructure, and identify possible targets of opportunity for later missions. The mission duration will only last as long as it takes to set those pylons to blow, so I don't expect a lot of data to be gained; just do what you can. "The weather forecast for New Megaopolis is calling for heavy overcast tonight, augmented by the ruins that are still smouldering, and the smog being pumped out by whatever's left of Robotnik's factories. In addition, the latest telemetry shows that there have been no further reinforcements of the Egg Fleet numbers, and a good portion of them are using the last remaining fuel pylons, possibly to refuel and transfer over Egg Pawns and supply materiel sent by the Empire Sub-bosses. "Obviously, this mission couldn't have been at a better time." Scattered laughter and snickers rippled through the group in reply. "If I may, love," Geoffrey St. John cut in, unfolding his arms and clasping them together in front of him. "My initial recon of the city following the Enerjak incident did not go well. I was able to confirm that there's not a lot of ground troops left, but what numbers are left were able to find me, no matter what I did. Their accuracy in pinpointing my location dropped off significantly, as soon as I entered a building or stood on rubble. It's my assumption that the blighter's got some sort of seismic detection system in place." Sally nodded. "Thank you, Geoff. I know it doesn't look like much out there people, but you'll have to keep your feet off the ground." "Now, when we get to the mission area, we'll split into two teams. The Chaotix will handle outer cordon, and should the need arise, will be the primary Quick Reaction Force to take care of incoming hostiles." Mighty cracked his knuckles, and Julie-su said emphatically, "We'll be ready." "Good," Sally replied. Taking her laser pointer, she indicated the main thoroughfare leading from the Dockyards into the inner city. "I'll want the Chaotix posted within easy access to the mission area, but positioned to easily intercept any reinforcements coming from the inner city." "Alright, sounds good," Vector agreed with a curt nod. "Charmy and Espio, you're my sentries." "You got it!" "Understood." "The Freedom Fighters will comprise team two," Sally continued, "and will be responsible for taking out the targets. Tails, I’d like you with Charmy and Espio, and Sonic will be with QRF." "Big Blue to the rescue," Sonic declared. Sally, to her credit, ignored him. "Now, in regards to you, Sierra, you'll be with myself, Bunnie D'Coolette, and Amy Rose. You'll be helping secure the area, destroy any hostiles that might be securing the pylons, and helping set the charges. Nicole was able to encrypt a special timer, armed by a simple PSI sensor attached to the fasteners, and detonated via remote connection. "I do realize that it may seem like we're tossing you right into the fire, but there really shouldn't be many problems. A quick in and out." Edited by Talancir D'Landior, Dec 28 2012, 07:39 PM.

Sierra's tail curled and uncurled as its owner followed the princess' briefing. She worked alone the vast majority of the time; the Freedom Fighter's organization and teamwork would be a complete change of pace. Still, it only made the "quick, in-and-out" mission that much more intriguing. "Ah, don't worry, Love; fire is kind of my thing," she waved a hand dismissively, an amused expression on her face. Nero simply yawned. "Or, one of my things, in any case. And, I haven't had much fighting beyond a few family duels, but I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out if need be." "It's very simple, really," her familiar mumbled, crossing one paw over the other and laying his head atop both. "Smash them all to bits. Then smash the bits into bits." |

The assembled group had mixed reactions to Sierra's familiar, except for one pink furred hedgehog who immediately went google-eyed. "Oh my god, that's so cool!" The pink hedgehog, one Amy Rose by name, went over to Nero with the intent of petting the familiar. "Your dog is awesome, Miss Sierra!" Sally spared a smirk at Amy, then continued. "In regard to the expected resistance, we don't anticipate much. The majority of the Egg Army remnants are tasked with cleanup and reconstruction of the city, so getting into the city shouldn't be a problem. We've identified a couple of Egg Fleet frigates, and possibly three or four cruisers. Nicole estimates that they will only be able to disembark thirty percent of their crew complement for Dockyard defense, and judging from their size, we don't expect to see more than forty Egg Pawns on the ground. "The centerpiece of the reinforcements is from the Dragon Kingdom, however. Hershey, could you pull up the stats on the Egg Battleship?" Hershey tapped a few keys, and a holographic image appeared of a ship, which was shaped similarly to a Great White Shark. "This is the Egg Battleship. To our knowledge, it is the only one that's been completed. There was another in construction, however it was destroyed in it's berth when Enerjak ravaged the city. Almost two kilometers long, it seems to have been designed from the keel out as a siege platform." Sally indicated the snarling mouth of the monstrous ship. "This part here contains its primary weapon, which we've determined to be a spinal-mounted graser. In summary, a graser is a laser operating in the gamma-ray range. Imagine a nuclear explosion channeled into a beam; it has no firing arc and a limited range -say three kilometers or so- so it must rely on the Battleship's ability to swing its bulk around in order to bring the graser to bear. Other than that, the remainder of its weapons is purely defensive in nature. "Intelligence reports indicated that the Egg Battleship is currently docked, but that could change if we are detected enroute. I should note that we don't need to worry about the Egg Fleet ships firing on the Dockyards; Dr. Eggman needs as much of the docking pylons intact for his Egg Fleet reinforcements to remain at his city, so if we're detected inside, we'll only have to worry about the Fleet's marine detail. "Now, once the pylon foundations are set to blow, exfiltration will occur by saucer pod. We'll move south-southwest, crossing through to Old Megaopolis, and meet up with the FFA Special at this preset Rendezvous Point." The overhead image scrolled down as Sally continued, coming to a stop inbetween two ruined skyscrapers; a red dot blinked, marking the RP. "If there's nothing else, that will conclude the briefing, and we can get on our way. Any questions?" |

"Dog?" "Miss Sierra?" the witch repeated, stepping out of the way and watching Nero recoil at the pink girl's approach. "That's way too formal." She waved a hand and smiled. "Sierra's fine." The skeleton dog simply flattened his fluffy, black ears again his hard, pale skull and sulked under Amy's petting. "And I'm not some common, flea-bitten hound, or her pet. I'm a familiar." the last word rolled off his tongue as if it carried as much weight as "king."
Sierra shook her head, as many others probably had. We can get on our way: the words were oddly sobering, and suddenly the scene seemed much more real, as if the past hour had simply been a play onstage. But, no, she, a magic shoppe witch, was really about to follow the Freedom Fighters onto a jet plane and infiltrate the psychotic Dr. Eggman's (crippled) main base. She couldn't say the rest of the Trubeau's would have been completely on board with the prospect; at the most, they would have been nervously amused, and that only on the basis that their little Sierra was joking... ... Of course, the rest of the Trubeau's didn't seem all that interested in the world's various major issues to begin with. It wasn't that the Trubeau's stayed in the confines of their stores because they were inept. Sierra ventured out because she knew it was the exact opposite was true- because the Trubeau's could do more than just sell enchanted broomsticks from the safety of a civilized city street. It was time the witches really lent a hand... Starting with her. |

"Now now, Amy,” a voice behind Hershey chided gently, accompanied by the step-clack sound of walking supported by a crutch. “Be careful when you handle that one. His is the kind of bite that you could feel in your soul." A crippled walrus shambled into view, dressed in a blue uniform with red trim and decorated with gold epaulets, with a red sash draped over his left shoulder. A foam neck brace supported his head. “Oh, Rotor!” Sally exclaimed, moving forward to gently embrace the injured walrus. “I would have thought that you would be resting after the council meeting earlier today.” "Yes I know, but I wanted to see you off. Besides, I have another job to do, and I'd rather do that before getting some rest." "Another job? You shouldn't be working too hard in your condition. Which job is it?" "Which job? Helping Uncle Chuck fend off the Liberals, or healing up?" "Whichever one comes first," Sally said with a laugh. "Thanks for seeing us off." "Oh, I'm not done yet. From here, I'm headed off to the ATC tower to monitor you guys up until you're out of the airspace." "You're such a mother hen," Sally said jokingly, giving him a light jab on the shoulder. Rotor chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his head with his free hand. "Good luck, Sally," Rotor replied. "I wish I could be going with you." While Sally and Rotor started catching up, Vector turned to the others. "I didn’t have any questions. Did anyone else have any questions?” “Ah think we’re good here, sugar-gator,” Bunnie D’Coolette replied. “Right, guys?” A chorus of agreement answered her, and she added, “Well then, without further ado, let's board up and get settled in." "Finally," Nero sprang onto his feet and hopped away from Amy. "Someone who appreciates my genius around here." "He wouldn't bite you even if he could." Sierra rolled her eyes and played a smirk. -- Soon enough (and at a certain bunny's suggestion), the team started filing onto the jet. The Freedom Fighter Special was nothing if not impressive- and bigger on the inside. The saucer pads Sierra had seen being impossibly loaded into the jet all fit comfortable in the cargo bay, which, in turn, turned seamlessly into a comfortable seating area for passengers. The witch found a seat on the aisle and removed her hat. Nero had already disappeared from view, as was his habit. His master simply tapped her fingers against the brim and (distantly) watched everyone else find their seats. Setting bombs and fighting robots, she mused, turning her gaze to the top of the cabin, I'm not fluent in water logic, though around bombs... I'll have to be careful with fire. Enchanting will be best... Yes. I'll have to use things from the environment... We'll see. |

As the Freedom Fighters, Chaotix, and mercenary disappeared into the innards of the plane, Sally grasped Rotor's clawed hand. "See you later." “Indeed,” Rotor replied. “See you later. Oh and in case you guys forgot, I went and grabbed these from the lake.” Reaching into a pocket on his overcoat, Rotor produced a small leather pouch. “There should be enough to spare for everyone.” “Aw, thank you! You didn’t have to do that, Rotor, but thank you all the same.” Hugging him again, Sally added, “I’m burning daylight, so I’d best be on my way. And don’t forget to get some rest!” “I’ll do that, Sally. Good luck!” With one final glance over her shoulder, Sally made her way up the plane's loading ramp. "Last one up," she declared. "Got it, Sally! I'm closing the door," Tails' voice filtered from the cockpit. With a mechanical hum, the hydraulic arms attached to the ramp came to life with a jerk, then slowly cycled upward. Standing on the edge, Sally rode the ramp up with an air of smug, practiced ease. The ramp finally closed and locked in place, and Sally stepped over a seam into the cockpit area. As she slid into the flight engineer’s seat, she asked, "Going alright?" "Yep, just finishing the preflight checklist," Tails replied from the co-pilot seat, a headset resting on the side of his head. "Cabin pressure." "Stabilizing," Antoine replied, flicking a few switches. "Temperature control." "Set." "Engine instruments." Antoine pressed a switch, turning on the indicator and warning lights test. In response, the cockpit illuminated with various lights, in the effect known informally as 'the christmas tree.' "Working." "Pitot heat." "Off." "Flight controls." Antoine and Tails took turns manipulating their control yokes. "Free and correct." "Avionics." "On." "Check the weather." "Ok. King Frederick Control, zis is FFS Mark-II, requesting weather report for flightpath from airport to New Megaopolis, s’il vous plaît." “FFS Mark-II, this is Control...” Antoine wrote down on a sheaf of paper as the report was read out to him, and Tails continued on with the checklist. "Alright," Tails breathed. "Anti-ice... off. Transponder on standby... Beacon is on. Preflight checklist complete. Engine startup..." Tails and Antoine worked with professional efficiency, gently guiding through the plane through the startup of its engines. "Engines good," Antoine stated. "King Frederick Control, zis is FFS Mark-II, request clearance for takeoff, s'il vous plaît." Over the plane's radio, the Airport ATC responded, "FFS Mark-II, this is King Frederick Control, good evening. ATC takeoff clearance confirmed. Standby for final takeoff clearance." "Oui, happy to," Antoine replied to the ATC controller. “Tails, let us start with the takeoff checklist, yes?” Outside, the panels flanking the takeoff strip slowly folded away, and large metal constructs -the inertial accelerator rails- rose from the earth. As soon as they were in position, the rails were electrified, generating the magnetic pull which would help the engines push the plane into the air. "FFS Mark-II, King Frederick Control. You are cleared for takeoff. Godspeed." "Understood, King Frederick Control. Merci." Antoine turned to Tails and said, "Throttle up." "Throttling up." Outside, the engines of the aircraft could be heard building up to a monstrous roar. After a moment, Antoine reported, “We are at takeoff thrust.” “Ok. Brakes are... released.” As the brakes released, the passengers were pushed gently back into their seats, the sleek black craft building up speed as it rolled toward the takeoff rails. In her seat, Amy Rose raised her hands, screaming gaily, “Whee, I love this rollercoaster part!” As soon as they reached the rails, the voltage increased as the FFA Mark-II screamed down the tarmac, up the takeoff ramp, and with little ceremony, climbed for the upper atmosphere. In their headsets, the air traffic control officer radioed them. “FFS Mark-II, we confirm that you have cleared the airport.” ”Merci, Control. We will be seeing you after a while.” “Copy that. See you when you get back.” “Control, FFS Mark-II. Ok Tails, I am retracting the landing gear.” “Ok. Pitch is ten degrees nose-up, retracting flaps to one degree. Climbout checklist... throttle as required...” After the plane entered cruising mode, Tails brought Ray the Squirrel to the co-pilot seat, and began what appeared to be an ongoing hands-on training for flying the FFS. After Ray got comfortable, Antoine took over, and Tails made his way to the passenger section, where many of the freedom fighters were in a conversation regarding the mission. Several people were chatting into the narrow aisle in the middle of the seats, and a couple more sat attentive in their seats next to the plane wall. In the cargo compartment, Julie-su had begun doublechecking the equipment loadout for the two saucer pods, assisted by Espio and Bunnie D’Coolette. "So what do you think about this whole Enerjak business? You know, him taking out the city?" "Well, we don't know anything for sure just yet, just pictures." "Well yeah, but still! Like Sally said, this is an opportunity to take Eggman out for good!" "True, true..." "So, what would you do if the war was over?" Julie-su looked at Amy Rose with a slightly annoyed expression. "Aren't you getting ahead of yourself?" "What do you mean? I'm ready for this war to be over!" "The war isn't over yet. Eggman may yet recover from this." "Oh, Ah sure hope not! We've been fightin' him for too long. Ah for one want this t' be over." "Me too." "Me three." "We've been fighting this war for too long, I think. I wouldn't mind it being over. I could use the rest." "I might go traveling." "Yeah, that sounds like a good idea." |

"Rollercoaster?" Sierra repeated to herself, snapping out of her planning. In all her musings, the soft start of the aircraft's launch had come and gone without her notice. But it was almost too late to prepare now. The FFS shot down the rail just shortly after. It was as unceremonious of a first flight as it could possibly have been. There was a reason Sierra had picked a seat on the aisle, but even the security of the center of the jet could not stop her flinching and dragging her hat over her face. Rollercoaster part, indeed. One near-heart attack, an overall leveling-off of the jet's flightpath, and a newfound lifelong anxiety of take-off found the pointed hat back in its rightful spot on the witch's head. If I had one regret so far... She sighed. Of course the Freedom Fighters had paid their ascent any mind, a few already moving about the cabin, others talking amiably. To think she was joining the fight at the end of the war, while the youth around her had been a part since the very beginning. "Ah, you're this close to saving the world," she pinched a thumb and index finger together, "And you still haven't seen most of it?" |

Amy looked sheepish. "Well no... I mean, Mobotropolis was the first big country I'd seen outside of Mercia. That was cool back then, but after that, the war was on, so I really didn't get the chance to travel around. Maybe if I hadn't left Mercia, I would have been able to travel." "Oh really?" Sonic, who had said very little throughout the conversation about Eggman, eyed Amy skeptically. "And what were you doing when I first had to rescue you?" "I... well... I-I was...traveling... but that's not the point! The point is that I would like to travel once the war is over, and I am looking forward to the opportunity to do so!" Sonic sniggered. "Well, you can take good care of yourself these days. Probably shouldn't need my help." Amy cocked her head back indignantly, and with a huff, turned away from his crap-eating grin. "So how about you, Sierra? Where all have you been to around Mobius?" Edited by Talancir D'Landior, Jan 31 2013, 05:18 PM.

"Not many places," the witch answered, waving a hand dismissively. "Besides the Republic of Acorn, I've not traveled much outside Mercia. Here and there in the Federation, as well, but definitely not outside Eurish! "But, the other Trubeaus are all over," she continued, smiling. "You almost can't find a city without one of my aunts or cousins somewhere about. The only reason I ever even left Mercia was to chat with one of them." |

"You are so lucky, Sierra!" Amy rested her chin on her fists. "There's so many things I want to see before I get old. And that you don't run into trouble must be nice. I thought that the Eggman Empire controlled the seas, like he does everywhere else." "It really doesn't," Tails replied. "I met the Forty Fathoms Freedom Fighters a while back. It's thanks to mobians like them that it's safe to travel from one continent to another." "Oh! I completely forgot about them! Yeah, I guess that makes sense, then." By now, Julie-su and Bunnie had returned to the passenger cabin. "So what'd you think, Sugar-hog? What'll y'all be doing if Eggman were out of the way?" Sonic sighed, blowing air through his snout. "To be honest, I don't know. I'd want to go out and see the world, but I don't know." "Really? I'd have thought a guy like you would have everything planned out," Julie-su commented idly. "To be honest, I don't know if I'd want to see Eggman defeated." Amy Rose looked at Sonic in surprise. "What? You're kidding!" "Yeah, seriously! You've been fighting him the longest! Why wouldn't you want him gone?" "Well, it's because of that, I guess. Man, I've been at it since I was eight, busting up Robuttnik and his bots right and left, and just being the best guy for the good guys since I could remember. I've been at it for so long, I can't imagine me doing something else. It's kinda weird, and sorta scary at the same time." Sally, who had been resting her head in her palm for the entire conversation, crossed her legs and began swaying her top leg in the air. "Well, I could think up a thing or two." "Oh I know you could, Sal," Sonic replied with a playful air. "No, but seriously, I would like to see Eggman defeated, but I hadn't known a moment's rest since the original coup. What am I supposed to do, stop running around? What would I do for the rest of my life?" "Ah, that's a familiar musing of war," Julie-su said wistfully. "'When the list of enemies run dry, when the weapons are beaten into farming tools, when hate dies in the heart, what will there be for men like us?'" "Ok so, that's cool that other people have put it to words already. Weird, but cool," Sonic said, holding up a finger. "It's a great big unknown that I'm heading toward as fast as I can. I hate to say it, but it's actually got me worried." |

"Ah, I wouldn't worry if I were you," the witch shrugged, an amused expression playing on her features. "History has an uncanny way of repeating itself, and some patterns just don't end easily. "As uncharacteristically pessimistic of me as it is to say this, there will almost always be someone somewhere who craves power, who will presume to take it by any means, and who will need someone to oppose him... or her. With Eggman defeated, there will be a large void in that respect, and it will slowly start to fill to some extent. If you really want to keep fighting the good fight, no doubt you'd find something." She waved a hand as if to dismiss what she'd just droned on about, beaming all-the-while. "Don't take me too seriously, though. I doubt there'd be anything like what Eggman has done." |

Sonic looked at Sierra, a smile spreading on his face. "You know, I never thought of it that way. And you're right! with Eggman gone gone, there might be any number of people who will want to take the man's seat. With plenty of work like that, I'll never get bored!" "Well whatever the case," Tails offered, "We have a pretty awesome team. I don't think Robotnik will ever win." "So true, Tails. We're gonna win, cause we're the best!" "Blessed Ancient Walkers, my benefactors and protectors. Blessed Ancient Walkers, wise and benevolent. Blessed Ancient Walkers, noble and compassionate. Holy beyond mortal measure. How I miss them." The land was dead. The irradiated earth was as comfortable as an icy tomb. "They are gone, and I am left. Connery, the last of the Paladins gone, and I am left. An Empire of great majesty, the Concordat, the Fourteen Champions..... all gone. All ground down into dust. All about me, I see the Unraveling. I can feel it hanging over the fate of this world, as an assassin's blade. Wrought by my oldest enemy, my dearest friend, Daicronaith the Jackal. Daicronaith the Destroyer. For by his hand, all will come to ruin." Within the murky, lifeless depths, a subterranean cavern sat empty. A faint golden sheen lining the walls of the cavern was the only hint to what it had contained. "And so I have waited, in the stillness, waiting for our salvation. Nations rise and fall, heroes come and go, and I have waited here, in the place once known as the Source of All. The Source of All, long since destroyed, along with the irradiated ruin of the Old Mobotropolis, last haven of the House of Acorn." Water from the nearby Great River had begun dripping slowly, yet inexorably into the cavern. In a few decades, the cavern would become part of an aquifer. "My hopes rose and fell like the tides as I have watched the rise and fall of the heroes. So bright, so full of promise. So fleeting, as they burn out in the glory of their passing, and they fall by the wayside. The prophecy unfulfilled. And yet, here and now, as I drift in this void, I have watched these two heroes as they grow in stature." In the opaque darkness, something stirred. Expansive, powerful, and yet without form, it moved across the stillness of the water. "The Unraveling quickens, and hope against hope, I waited for the Chosen to appear. The Two Among the Chosen, sent to bind the Unraveling and summon the Great Harmony. At long last, Creation has lowered its veil, and my sight is blind no more. The First Among the Chosen had arisen in anger. Mammoth Mogul was struck a Titan's blow, and as he fell, my heart soared. Ancient Walkers be praised! Half of the prophecy, manifest at last. The formless being coalesced into something humanoid. Knee deep in the void and the water, the being paused. "Time has passed since then, and now, I have sensed the thread of destiny surrounding his companion. The Second Among the Chosen, the Unfettered Wanderer. He who shines more brightly than other heroic peers of this age. His deeds echo across the fabric of the cosmos, yet I must be sure. It is the time of reckoning. An inner quality must be assessed. I must meet this.... Sonic." The being raised its arms. Bright upon bright light illuminated the cavern, banishing the darkness. When the light finally died away, the being was gone, and darkness reigned supreme within its prison once more. The trip was certainly long. No inflight movies or song choices or food to break up the flight time into comfortable sections; just conversation and sleep. Antoine and Tails had begun guiding the FFS-MKII down from the upper stratosphere some time ago, and were soon nearing their destination of New Megaopolis. "Coming out of scramjet mode," Tails announced from the copilot seat. Antoine chuckled, albeit a little nervously. "Merci beaucoup, Tails." Switching off the autopilot, he grasped the control yolk and began to guide the plane into a controlled bank to starboard. "Ladies and gentlemen," he announced into the intercom, "we are all systems OK, heh heh. Mrs. Prower's favorite son has provided a nice view of New Megaopolis over there and-" ((Choose a number between one and twenty.)) |
