Mobius' Last Hope (Advanced); A Throwback to Classic Sonic

I've always wanted to see a roleplay take place in the classic Sonic universe as opposed to the current (and, in my opinion, somewhat convoluted) Earth continuity. In some ways a throwback to the SatAM style, this RP will take place in Mobius. Let me just make a few things clear about the setting up front.

-Mobius is an Earth-like planet populated almost entirely by anthromorphs (which means no human player characters, period.)
-Most fighting is done hand-to-hand; things like swords and guns don't have much of a place in Classic Sonic. While things like claws, magic, telekinesis, psychic powers etc. are acceptable, weapons aren't allowed except in special circumstances (for example, if your character is a robot, it would make sense that they'd have a laser cannon or a missile launcher, but machine guns and the like aren't as acceptable.) Chaos Control is present and possible, but no one knows enough about the Chaos Emeralds to even know it exists or how to use it. The discovery of Chaos Control is actually a plot point I have planned further down the road.
-Clothing beyond accessories (shoes, gloves, hats, glasses, rings, etc.) is a bit rare. While it's not uncommon to see female characters wearing dresses (a la Amy) it's just as common to see them without (a la Sally).
-Rings are rare, and do not function similarly to their game counterparts. They're last resort kind of weapons, giving anyone who absorbs them a temporary boost of power. Conversely, one can choose to keep a Ring on them as safety net; if your character's in bad shape, absorbing a Ring can bring them back to full health.
-The canon of this RP doesn't precisely follow that of the games or any other continuity, so please bear with me if I change certain things to suit the story. If at any time you have questions about the universe of this RP, don't hesitate to ask.
-Canon characters are not playable, chiefly because most of them are dead (see the plot below for more information.) That being said, some of them may make an appearance at some point. Even characters that aren't typically considered "classic" (like Tikal and Chaos) could show up, albeit in the classic setting. Who knows?
-There's really not a lot of established story in my version of Mobius yet, so if you need to make up a village or a tribe or something to get some context for your character, feel free. The worldbuilding should be collaborative, if anything; it's a group effort.

The world map I'll be using is below.

With that out of the way, let's get to the story.

~

The Death Egg III; if ever there was one machination of the dastardly Dr. Robotnik that most deserved the title of "doom fortress", the Death Egg III was it. Twice was his orbital space station decimated by that "blasted blue blur", but the third iteration of the Death Egg was different; not only was it twice as large, but it also housed a weapon unrivaled in terms of destructive power; the Master Cannon. Powered by the Master Emerald, which was stolen from it's resting place on Angel Island yet again, the Master Cannon was a laser capable of turning entire continents into smoldering craters.

Which is exactly what it did in its first firing -- the once thriving continent of Mobius Major, home to heavily populated cities, verdant fields and thousands of innocent Mobians, was absolutely obliterated when hit with the Master Cannon, scorching the earth and killing everyone unfortunate enough to be there at the time.

As usual, the burden of stopping Robotnik fell to three heroes; Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna. Unfortunately, the trio lacked one luxury they usually had: time. With the Master Cannon ready to fire, they simply didn't have time to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds, a powerful weapon that usually gave them the edge they needed to defeat Eggman. With only three Chaos Emeralds in tow, the three attacked the Death Egg, fighting their way through the doom fortress with considerable difficulty.

At last the three reached the Master Cannon's central control room, but they simply couldn't hold off the badniks swarming them in droves. Pinned down and on their last legs, the three shattered the Master Emerald and sent the shards hurdling towards Mobius, if only to ensure Robotnik wouldn't be able to collect and reassemble them. And then... the three met their end on the Death Egg, unable to save Mobius when they needed to the most.

Without a power source for his ultimate weapon, Robotnik no longer had the ability to crush Mobius in one fell swoop, but that didn't mean the war was over. Without Sonic in his way, Robotnik's chances of successfully conquering Mobius practically doubled. While Robotnik remained aboard the Death Egg, his army of badniks descended unto the smoldering crater that used to be Mobius Major and began constructing the Eggman Empire. Badnik factories sprang up everywhere, churning out more and more robotic rapscallions every day.

What remained of Mobius gathered in Mobius Minor, the smaller of the two main Mobian continents. In the capital city of Pacahamac, the Grand Mobian Army was formed, comprised of both large militant tribes and individual warriors. While a primarily disorganized and haphazard army, GMA freedom fighters managed to stop the advance of the Badnik army into Mobius Minor, although more and more slip through every day.

The leader of the GMA, a mysterious and charismatic military genius who goes only by Moby, calls a summit in Pacahamac to discuss the future of Mobius and the inevitable war between the Eggman Empire and the Grand Mobian Army. Rumors are beginning to spread that Chief may have happened upon a Chaos Emerald, but these are still largely unconfirmed.

~

That's the premise. The story would begin, of course, at the war summit in Pacahamac. Characters could be GMA soldiers, mercenaries/freelancers, citizens of Mobius Minor, or even badniks if they so wished. An official character sheet and rules will be up soon, but first I want to see if there's enough interest to merit me investing time into that.

Feel free to ask any questions and please post to let me know you're interested!

A bit of a colder reception than I had anticipated. Now that I think about it, I did bludgeon you guys with a wall of text. Oh well.

Here's some information on the way I balance player characters in this RP. Please take the time to read it and feel free to ask any question.

Hmm, I am definitely interested in this and I've actually been considering joining all day lol. Now, my character of choice for this would be Terrador (profile can be found in my signature) and I've already chosen which attributes I'd favor and which I'd weaken. Of course I'd make a few small edits to fit this RP such as his birthplace and to a lesser extent, his residence. My only problem with entering Terrador is that he wields a staff and I'd be hesitant to enter without it. Would having that weapon be acceptable?

I read this earlier. I have to say, I'm extremely impressed by how much thought went into this!

That being said, I'm still debating on whether to join. My character (I only have one main, semi-fleshed out character) follows more of a game-timeline. So I'm debating whether to use my existing character and treat it as an AU, or to create a new character.

Basically, I'm debating joining this.

However, I'm still amazed by this topic. I hope you get a lot of people to sign up. = ]

Really appreciate the interest, guys. Especially after my welcome topic had no posts, I was really starting to feel ignored.

I implore you to join. I would caution you on trying to adapt your other character though; this universe is very different from that of the games, and the last thing I want to happen is that you'd have to change your character so much that it's not what you had in mind in the first place.

If you want my advice, I'd say making a new character would be in your best interests. Especially if you've only got one other character in your stable, the exercise of creating a new one will probably be better for you in the long run.

I'm really not getting a "classic" vibe from Terrador; I think more than simple changes to his backstory and character will be required to make him fit with this setting. In addition, his list of Geomancy techniques is quite long and extensive, and it was my intention that player characters would start off as fairly inexperienced warriors. I would also suggest that you make a new character for this universe, as it is quite unlike most other continuities that currently exist in the Sonic canon. But, if you truly wish to continue on with Terrador, then I won't stop you.

Full character sheet to follow soon enough.

There's also the problem that I'm not very knowledgeable about this sort of setting. Could I learn as I went along?

Hmm, honestly, I was thinking that would happen with Terrador, which is why I'm only considering at the moment. I never got the impression the characters would start off as inexperienced fighters. I wouldn't have suggested Terrador if that were the case. I'm not too good at creating characters on the spot as my current 4 were made at complete random. This does sound highly interesting and I would like to be a part of this. I'll wait for the character sheet to come out then I'll take it from there.

Of course! Considering I'm basically making a lot of the setting up as I go along, it should be easy for you to jump in as long as you know the basic conventions of the sonic universe, mostly information about badniks, Mobius, and the emeralds. I won't go too in depth, nor am I a stickler for canon, so you needn't worry about having a breadth of knowledge on Classic Sonic. One of the first things I plan to do after getting the character sheet up is adding a list of factions and important locations to give you guys a feel for this universe.

Inexperienced wasn't the right word, I suppose. The warriors themselves can be competent fighters, but none of them would be veterans or masters, so to speak. Up until this point, Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles have dealt with Robotnik pretty much on their own, but now that the Eggman Empire is rapidly expanding and the classic trio are dead, a world that has never been subject to true war (Mobius) is actually going to have to pull together and form a competent army to fight the badniks.

The characters will be people of this nation, and as such, unaccustomed to war and constant fighting. That's what I meant by "inexperienced". We'll all be somewhat decent fighters, but not on the level of Sonic or Knuckles, obviously. Catch my drift?

Regardless, I would still recommend making a new character, and the character sheet is nearly done.

I'll wait to create a character until the sheet comes out. I'm in! ^^

( At least, I'm fairly sure I'll be in. )

Another thing. With the stats, do you start out average, or can you already have an advantage in one area and a disadvantage in another? For example, let's say I have a character who acts as a scout. Could they have a higher Acrobatics skill and a lower Strength to start?

Also, is it limited to one character?

You're encouraged to pick attributes from the start, yes. You don't have to start out average, unless you really want to.

Your favored and weak attributes won't change for the rest of the story, though. You may learn new techniques, but it's unlikely that you're going to change your favored and weak attributes unless there's some sort of special circumstance.

Putting the finishing touches on the OC as we speak. Here's information on special techniques.

Character limits... not sure yet. Depends on how many applicants I get. For now, I would assume just one per player until further notice.

Well Terrador isn't a master combatant. He does have an extensive moveset, yes, but most of which are simply support/defensive attributes. Given how you've described the character sheet, it seems all I must do is simply choose my preferred moves. Again, I'll simply wait until I see the character sheet and I'll see about creating a new character for this.

So if the character is a bat, flying counts as a technique? Hmm. Perhaps silent flying, to avoid detection. I could see how hovering and gliding could be considered techniques...

Ha! Looks like I started planning a character on accident. The bad thing is, I might like these characters enough to add them to my ever-growing horde. Oh dear. ^^;

The need to have flying as a tech is for balance. There needs to be a drawback to flight-capable characters, so giving up a tech spot is fair in my opinion.

At last, the character sheet! Good times.

Name:

Species: (No humans, as previously stated, and no Chaos either. Try to stay away from obscure half-breeds, if at all possible. If your character is robotic or a cyborg please list that here as well.)

Gender:

Age:

Appearance: (In at least one decent sized paragraph, describe your character's appearance. Things like scars, fur color, eye color, body type, approximate height and weight. Describe accessories if applicable. A picture will suffice, but please make sure it's decent quality. Also make sure to denote any differences between the picture and your intended appearance in text.)

Favored Attributes: (See the attributes section above for information on how to fill out this section.)

Weak Attributes: (See above.)

Other Skills, Misc Information: (In this section, you may wish to describe the basis of your character's powers and attributes and any other traits about them that merit further explanation. For example, if my character was a robot, I would list here that they don't need to eat or sleep, but that they're also weak to lightning attacks and are affected by magnetic fields. If my character had psychic abilities, I'd explain the extent of their powers and a basic rundown of how/why they have them. Get the idea?)

Techs: (You may start with up to three techs. See the above section on techs for more information. Please list techs like this:

-Name of Tech-
<description>

Remember that that if your character can fly, hover, or glide, that needs to count as a tech for balance purposes.)

History: (The meat of the profile. In at least two decent length paragraphs, describe the important events of your character's life up until now. Make sure to include details on where they're from, any possible family, and their role in the war so far. There isn't a lot of established canon yet, so feel free to make up tribes or villages for them to originate from.)

Inventory: (For now, leave this section blank.)

For your benefit, a blank, tagged version. Make sure to read the above version first, as it includes all the information on what to include in the profile.

Code: HTML

You may wish to notice that I don't have a personality section. That's mostly because I want you guys to express your character's personality in character, and not feel bound to have them act a certain way based something you wrote when you created them. It is my firm belief that personality sections are the devil, and are a common hallmark of inexperienced roleplayers.

Good luck, and once again, if you have ANY QUESTIONS, feel free to ask.

I feel like the questions master here.

I have a pretty good idea of who I want my character to be.

So, flying counts as a tech for sure. Do hovering and gliding count as separate techs? If so, my character will have no special moves. XD Which, I guess could work, considering they probably wouldn't have spent a lot of time fighting. ^^

Just put them into one tech.

Don't feel bad about the questions. Honestly I feel really shitty about how rushed everything is. Usually I'd have more established setting by now, but as it stands I'm just trying to get more people interested, because right now we've only got three people involved. >_>

...in other words, tell all your friends about us! Woo and yay!
