Updated at 3:18 p.m. ET: A teacher's son clad in black and carrying two guns rampaged through a Connecticut elementary school Friday, killing 20 small children and six adults, including his mother, in the nation’s second-worst school shooting, law enforcement officials said.

The gunman, identified as Ryan Lanza, 24, was also found dead at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, a federal law enforcement official said. Lanza's mother is a kindergarten teacher at the hilltop school, and it's inside her classroom where most of the casualties were found, according to NBCNewYork.com.

Another relative, who was not identified, was found shot to death at a home in Newtown, officials said.

Lanza’s younger brother was being questioned to see if he knew anything about the mass killing, NBC News reported.

Some young survivors -- all under age 10 -- described the terror of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and a massive police response that included SWAT officers going room to room to search for victims as they huddled in classroom corners.

Robert Licata said his 6-year-old son was in class when the gunman burst in and shot the teacher.

"That's when my son grabbed a bunch of his friends and ran out the door," he told the Associated Press. "He was very brave."

One student told NBC Connecticut she was in the gym when she heard “seven loud booms.”

“The gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled,” she said. "And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all … started crying.

"All the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us," she added. "So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside. So we did and we came in the firehouse.”

The high death toll and the young age of the victims sent shock waves all the way to the White House, where the flag was lowered to half staff.

President Obama, his voice cracking at times, said he reacted to the tragedy as a parent.

“Our hearts are broken today,'' he said. “The majority of those who died today were children. Beautiful little kids between the ages of five and ten years old.”

Authorities in the small bedroom community 60 miles from New York City were alerted to the unfolding carnage by a 911 call around 9:30 a.m. and then reached out to state police and neighboring police departments for help.

Connecticut State Police Lt. Paul Vance said troopers who responded fanned out across the school and searched “every door, every crack, every crevice” of the building.

He said only that they found “several fatalities,” including the shooter, at the scene.

The 600-student school goes up to the fourth grade. After the search was over, children and staff were escorted to a staging area outside.

Children said they were told to close their eyes as they were led outside, apparently to avoid seeing anything gruesome.

The second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history sent crying children spilling into the school parking lot as frightened parents waited for word on their loved ones.

Over the next two hours, they were reunited with loved ones who rushed to the school, along with police cars and ambulances from all over Fairfield County.

Brenda Lebinski, mother of a third-grader, said she found a “horrendous” scene.

“Everyone was in hysterics - parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied,'' she said, according to Reuters.

One parent picking up his 7-year-old son said the shooting was “the most terrifying moment a parent can imagine” and described the anguish of waiting to find out if his son was a victim and then running to his child.

“It was the greatest relief in my existence,” the father said. “I’m just happy that my kid’s OK.”

Bracing for a large influx of wounded, Danbury Hospital went on lockdown and cleared four trauma rooms. It received only three patients, including a teacher shot in the foot, the Associated Press reported.

An official told NBCNewYork.com that two 9mm handguns were recovered from the scene. But The Associated Press said one of the guns was a.223-caliber rifle.

The FBI was on the scene, assisting with the investigation. “There is a great deal of search warrant activity…in and out of the state,” Vance said, without giving specifics.

Connecticut Gov. Dannell Malloy met with families near Sandy Hook.

“As you can imagine, the governor is horrified by what’s happened,” said aide Roy Occhiogrosso.

The death toll is the highest from a school shooting in U.S. history since a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007. At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, two teens killed 13 people and wounded 24 in 1999.

Parent Stephen Delgiadice, whose 8-year-old daughter was not hurt, said he never could have imagined such bloodshed in the quiet town, where the police force has only three detectives.

"It's alarming, especially in Newtown, Connecticut, which we always thought was the safest place in America," he told The Associated Press.

A friend of mine told me the reason we see more bad things then before is cause we have more readily access to info and news. Yet it feels like massacres are becoming more common here in the US. I can already tell there will be fingers pointing, people blamed, and in all the madness, the NRA will defend gun owners more then the people who were killed.

While I want to offer alot more of my own opinion, we barely know alot about the killer right now so I'll wait.

I didn't see anyone post this yet so I figure I would.

Not the first time this has happened. Dreadful nonetheless, though.

Indeed.

As I thought about it, I realized that this kind of thing is what often happens to children in warzones, especially in the current hotspots in the world.

No child, American or otherwise, should have to go through this.

I'm not sure if the goal was really "amusement", I mean the murderer went and killed his father and mother before shooting upon the kids and then ultimately committing suicide.
Regardless, this was a tragic event, and it's just awful that someone would kill their own parents and several young children.

Indeed, and this makes the third mass shooting this year(In the US). I remember reading a article or two of some that were prevented.

I know gun laws would not prevent it from happening, but something is going on with the people. We can't stop things like this from happening, but I feel something must be done to at least curb it. Because three in one bloody year is pretty high all things considering, and it makes me worried if this is going to become a norm.

As I said to my mom, we either at least try to curb this behavior, or someones going to come in and get enough power to try to stop it, and usually that goes about as well as you may think.

A cartoon I saw posted on 4chan probably is likely accurate to one of the causes of the problem. It showed a rather deranged looking man, with one path, a bunch of high steps, to mental help, while a leveled, easy, and advertised way towards guns.

Christmas is back again

There's no way to predict a total lunatic shows up killing dozens of innocent children for what. An earlier argue. Serious it's best to thread careful around strangers, as who knows what sick and twisted mind's behind that facial expression.

Worse is, I think it would've been fair if he didn't kill him self, but had to make it through a trial and then receive a slow death by ether staying in prison or receive an total overhaul of gas.

My condolences to all kid's parents. Can't be easy to know their children's been shot. It's no better with the killing episode by the shopping center.
And well the Dark Knight release.

Oh my gosh, this is horrible. Why would they want to kill innocent children in the first place?

I feel so sorry for the families of those affected.

So the killer had a rifle as his primary weapon and two handguns.

I guess he played too much Counter-Strike.

You won't get much closer, 'till you sacrifice it all.
It's incredibly upsetting when tragedies like this happen- those children had their whole lives ahead of them, and it was snatched away from them in an instant. The killer didn't deserve to opt out the easy way and kill himself- justice should have been done for the sake of all the victims and their families.
