The most important meal of the day
|
So I was in school today and my teacher asked my class to discuss the following: A man in southern Indiana (I live in northern Indiana, the last city before you hit the Michigan border)hung an effigy of President Obama up at the end of his driveway in his front yard. It was a dummy with an Obama mask as a head. It was hanging with a noose around it's neck. There were also other symbols of death such as an electric chair, etc. My teacher asked us whether displaying an image of a POTUS with a noose around its neck should be illegal. All I'm asking you guys is your thoughts on this particular occurance. I know there have been other things like this to happen. Personally, I think it should be considered an act of treason. Its not only extremely disrespectful, but also could be considered an open threat towards the president. The Secret Service is actually investigating this man who displayed the Halloween "decoration". Edited by Breakfast Princess, Oct 31 2012, 08:48 AM.

Free speech and whatnot... Is an investigation warranted? Probably not... But just in case he's completely insane I guess they're doing the right thing. |

This one's a tough call. I can see reasons for treating it as free speech and also reasons for treating it as a security threat. I guess it would have to be decided on a case by case basis. Now if this was all that he had, I reckon it'd be free speech. But if he had these effigies and let's say a stockpile of explosives and the like, I'd be all for putting him in the bin. At the same time, this anti-Obama rhetoric is just stupid. A majority voted him in and he's doing the job he was elected to do. Like every President beforehand. So he's of mixed race. Big deal. The same respect should be afforded to him as every last President prior to him. If he screws the pooch, then he should answer to Congress, the Supreme Court and the voters. Not violent extremists. |

Sandopolis Act 2
|
Oh dear. While I'm not an Obama fan, that's terrible. = ( I don't agree with the action at all, but I'm not sure if it can be labeled as treason... |

This is the most pathetic way to show your Halloween spirit. This person should've tried hanging a dummy of someone that doesn't exist. It's such a nasty thought to think this would be funny. That guy should grow up. |

Freedom of speech, even though this is a rather childish and pathetic way to show disapproval. He's insane, I say the best punishment is to let him wallow and drown in his own insanity. |

I think it could possibly be wrong just because it actually is a figure of a [real] person and all, not to mention the racism that could be seen. Regardless, I think it's a little childish what he did. I mean, I read an article a few months back about a girl who, over her twitter or FB, said we should assassinate Obama to get him out of office. Joke or not, "Freedom of Speech" only goes so far... and things like this may not look so funny to our government. |

Disgusting as it is...It should be allowed. The sad truth about free speech, is that even the bad stuff will be allowed to be thrown into the mix. But why give government or any form of power more so by giving them the right to say such things are offensive and are banned? Then we can see many other things that are labeled offensive and then banned. Its much like religious speech these days. It feels that in order to avoid offending anyone, we have to enforce a form of secularism on society, which actually ends up annoying more people then solving the problem. The point is, I would rather have such offensive shit then live in a society where it is considered acceptable for the government or any form of power to censor anything they feel is offensive. We are not China, and in no way, should we see them as roll models in anything. Edited by VlaDDrakkeN, Nov 6 2012, 09:30 PM.
