Hmm...Gimp is free, but I absolutely despise Gimp. I have this program called HeliosPaint that I colored some of my art at. Heliospaint is a free and trustworthy program, but doesn't have as much options as I want. I also have been addicted to this newer program that is a lot like Adobe Photoshop. It's called Pixlr Photo Editor. Just type it on Google and download it. It's really good. It has layering options, filters, you can adjust the photo a lot, adjust layers, and tolerance levels of paint buckets or other tools. You can also edit the hardness of your brush and load other brushes.

My first recommendation is, naturally, going to be Photoshop. I'm very competent with it, having use versions 6.0, 7.0 and CS2 quite extensively over the years and it feels weird for me to be using anything else. It's NOT a newbie-friendly program and it costs a small fortune(so you might have to "find" it ;) ) but it's certainly worth getting hold of a 30-day demo and giving it a whirl.

If you've never used Photoshop, I highly recommend GIMP. I've been using PS for so long I couldn't unlearn all the shortcut keys. As mentioned above GIMP is free but in essence it's just as powerful as PS, it just requires you learning doing things slightly differently. And if you don't have any add-on/plugins for PS such as Painter, I actually think GIMP is superior for brushwork and shading.

If you just want a program that isn't shitty Microsoft Paint then why not have a look at paint.net? It's apparently a poor man's PS and doesn't have as many options so there's less to confuse you and make you go WTF, but many pro artists use it with great success and fantastic results. I'm also led to believe this is free. Don't let the name confuse you, it's not related to the version of Paint you've been using at all.

I can't say as how I've heard of the two programs the above poster mentioned(what's your name dude? Your name history is so freaking frequent and inconsistent with names chosen, I don't know what to call you) but it might be worth checking them out.

One thing I can tell you, is anything that someome says can be used for stuff like Oekaki? Don't bother. It's usually an under-powered program with majorly stripped down featured that "cool kids" use, kinda like IRL when kids wear branded clothing. I avoid these like the plague, and most of the time these programs are in Japanese or Korean so you can't quite understand them anyway.

I'm going to have to say, my recommendation sits with Gimp, based upon positive experiences using it. As far as I understand its capabilities, it's basically like a free version of Photoshop with a very different layout.

Next on my list of recommendations would have to be Paint Tool SAI. From having used it, I can say with certainty that it's better than MS Paint. It doesn't seem to have quite as many capabilities as Gimp or Photoshop, but the layout is pretty cool. I dabbled with sprite comics a bit over three years ago (Maybe four; I'm not sure) and I have to say, I found Paint Tool SAI covered almost everything I wanted to do and accomplished it with ease. I needed to go to Gimp for the odd thing, usually regarding transparency, but overall SAI was pretty good.

I took a little look at the Pixlr Photo Editor that Dear Agony has mentioned as well. It looks really good, although admittedly I didn't spend much time on it.

Beyond that, all I can really say for sure is that I'm far from the best judge of what program to use. xD; I'm not much of a digital artist at all, and as of late most of my paint program usage can be summarized as cropping images for avatars, and making myself signatures. And even then, my most recent two signatures have been made by someone else.

Here are my two cents.

I've used Paint.NET as my first program after MS Paint. It's simple, yet you can learn the basics of a professional drawing program from it. Unlike Photoshop, this is easy to work with. It's like a small update from MS Paint. So if you want to learn how to work with a drawing program, I'd get that.

Then again, if you want something like Photoshop but just not as complicated, get GIMP. It's free and it is almost like Photoshop, only with less features and the quality isn't that good.

I'd recommend getting Paint Tool SAI if you have a tablet and want to draw smooth line art with pen pressure - I'm not sure GIMP can do that, or if you want to paint realisticly. I feel like this is one of the best "free" drawing programs out there. Although I haven't worked with it as much.

Corel Painter is also a good alternative for painting and making art, but you'd have to pay or use a 30 day trial.

If you're looking for a small program that handles the same as the one named above but isn't as complicated and is just fun to have, get Open Canvas.

Photoshop comes in handy if you also want to edit your pics, make your own wallpapers etc. It's a business program, really. I use it for school, for work, and for drawing. But you don't just only draw with it. It is the best program out of the bunch because it covers a lot of stuff and has a lot of features. I wouln't recommend getting it if all you're going to do is draw - especially when all you do is making fancharacters. There are better programs out there.

Care to explain why? It might help us out in future if someone else comes along and asks for a program to use.

Also nice one on finding something :)

One thing I really enjoyed about Paint.NET was the fact that you could move exactly one pixel using the arrow keys. I used a laptop touchpad for editing sprites before, and the ability to use arrow keys makes it awesome.
For actual drawing, I think Paint.NET's brushes are pretty bad, so you should learn to use GIMP or Paint Tool SAI, both of which I heard are great. And GIMP 2.8 was recently released with single-window mode, making it much less annoying to work with.
Why'd you choose Paint.NET, guy?

Cause I thought it was a major improvement from MS paint or whichever paint that comes with a PC.

It's not as annoying to curve lines as it would be on MS paint. I never got around to using GIMP never got a chance to use due to the size of the file and the connection speed of my internet and also it has the feature that lets me scan pictures if I have a scanner or a printer with a scanner for some reason I could never figure out how to get the thing to work.

I'd say Paint Tool SAI, I'm not exactly a pro when it comes to art (used to sketch and wasn't too bad, that gift has left me now though *sigh*) but that is pretty simple and I've managed to come out with some simple anime style pics I'm pretty happy with, I might upload some once I've got my current game art sorted out

Small bump for an important progress report-style question.

How are you getting on with your chosen program? Has it suited your needs adequately? Have you produced much with it?

Paint.net is a easy to use program. Well, at least for me. It helped me learn how to use layers and what not. Of course, the down side is often my work would be mistaken for ms paint. But it is a good program to start with.

Often the frustration for other programs would get on my nerves to a point where I just assume to use Paint.net.

Why? Because I like to ask about stuff I've offered advice on and see how you're getting on. Sorry for giving a hoot :P
