I have become a fan of a Tumblr blog known as A Moment of Archie Sonic, which points out the goofy things that have happened in the comics (inking errors, goofy dialogue, derpy pictures, etc.) I recently took a look today to find some interesting news, which I wanted to share along with others thoughts on the Archie comics in general (and their future). Before we get into the surprise/spoilers, let's begin with some background. I'm sure most of us are aware of the whole Ken Penders vs SEGA vs Archie drama that has been going on. Penders is the creator of much of the Echidna related things in the comics, along with other characters. He believes these characters are his and they have ended up going to court over it. Rumors have been going around that, as a precaution, Archie began to push most of these characters out, having them die or redone just in case. Along with these rumors of removing Penders' creations, there has been talk that SEGA is pushing Archie to become more closely tied to cannon. Which means futher possibly killing off/removing the existence of comic exclusive characters. This is not to say we're going to see the Freedom Fighters gone, but change is a'coming. Now, back to what I was talking about. After reading the above Tumblr, I found an interesting tidbit involving Sally Acorn. She is apparently getting a make over! Spoiler: click to toggle From the Tumblr: Quote: Anonymous: Thoughts on Ian calling Sally and the rest of the SATAM cast "old, out-dated, niche characters"? As if the two dozen vapid characters SEGA has produced post Sonic Adventure have been anything but those things. Tumblr: Ah, that. The context helps with that. Quote: Ian Flynn: But suffice it to say: Sally (and the SatAM cast) are old, out-dated, niche characters. If they’re to survive, they need to mesh with the way the Sonic franchise looks today. A bit more context now provided, I’ll continue- They are in fact old. They come from a cartoon that was on air over fifteen years ago. Out-dated? Yes, though some more than others. Some characters have gotten subtle updates over the years- for instance, Antoine. Though you don’t see as many people going ape-shit berserk over Antoine’s appearance changing as much as you do Sally, and considering that he spontaneously grew a tail… I think that’s a bigger change than pants. They are in fact niche characters. They exist within a niche. The show and the comics. They do not exist outside of those two mediums. They continue to exist because they’re beloved to the market of that particular show and this particular comic series. That is a factual statement. I agree that they need to mesh with the Sonic of today. They’re disharmonious with the style of the rest of the SEGA cast. Now before anyone jumps on me being a ‘SEGA purist’ or some other bullshit- I’m actually a huge fan of SatAM. I also know that SatAM is old as shit and that times change. I also know that other things Ian has said indicate that this is probably a mandate from SEGA, as he’s also said ‘I want these characters to survive, and I want to explain why (as best I can, restrictions notwithstanding)’. So I think the choice comes down to ‘these characters will no longer exist’ or ‘these characters will change’. So, does it make you a ‘SatAM hater’ to want to see them change, or a ‘SatAM hater’ to want to see them disappear entirely instead and their stories no longer be continued in an official format? Also, Sally’s design- I like it and I think the people going nuts over it need to consider that if you go clothes shopping, maybe get some makeup, and get your hair done that you’re not suddenly a new person. And finally, yes. The SEGA characters are two dimensional and underdeveloped. Along with new and old faces from the comics reappearing and being changed. So what are your thoughts on this? What about the rumors of "SEGA meddling"?

It baffles me that these SatAM Purists are so close-minded that even the slightest amount of change to their beloved characters makes them go into insane rages that makes the more reasonable fans of the series (myself included by the way) look like absolute idiots. Ugh... Now, onto Sally's design.... I think it's awesome. Even being the huge SatAM fan I am, I will agree that Ian's right - design-wise, the characters don't match the rest of the SegaSonic cast and some of them can only be called 'Sonic' characters due to the fact that they are in a 'Sonic' comic. Personally, I think making things meld together more would be a good thing and I may actually start reading the comic now. Only thing I'll criticize is I think Sal looks a little too young. I think they should have kept the cheek tuffs, because they do make her look older in the fan-made 3D model.

I like it, their designs are pretty outdated, considering they've been using the same design since friggen 1993. Sorry guys, but that's almost 20 years of the same design. That kind of look would get old to ANYONE. I like this new change, it's not so much of a drastic change either, all their doing is adding a few extra articles of clothing. She was practically naked with the vest on anyway.

So much for being in it for the fans... It's bad enough that I feel forced to buy both runs of comics and I especially hate that to keep my collection complete I have to buy the next, bullshit issues based on games(for the record, I read #242 once and put it in a box never to be read again, it's THAT bad) but to ruin what they've spent nearly 5 years building up, maybe longer, just because of a stupid claim over some characters? Really? So that's possibly why Locke died in the crappest way possible? That's why the Brotherhood is permanently lost to the Twilight Cage? How long until Julie-Su is written out I wonder? Hell, Albion just went completely to shit didn't it? And don't get me started on the "Dark Egg Legion". Ugh. Such bullshit... Why bother claiming the rights in courts then? It's too late to unbreak the potential of the echidnas, hell that's why Sonic Chronicles is in my top 5 of Sonic games because I've always been attracted to the mysterious aspects of echidna lore, and Archie comics ticked all those boxes. BTW if this is just a major conspiracy theory I will have blood

Then again, I tend to think of Sally and most of the Satam cast rather overrated. I agree MoD that I would like to know more, or even, have Echidnas back in the games, which is why I really liked Sonic Chronicles in that aspect. Also, lol at the person saying "As if any of the characters produced after Sonic Adventure was not that."

Posts: 3,112 Group: E Rank Legend Member #59 Joined: April 29, 2006	Considering we have people who complain about eye color though, I don't think it should've been a surprise that somewhere out there, someone was not okay with this. I myself really love the new design, it still feels like her, but with a more modern look. I think it reminds me of the cute Sonic Adventure style fan art I've seen. She still has her vest after all. I'm also hoping to perhaps see the fur tufts in the finalized design we'll see in the comics. Other than that, I will mention that a lot of things regarding Penders are speculation. However, there seems to be some truth overall, considering some issues using his characters were heavily altered in reprints. I also heard from an article on Pender's forum that he was able to stop the printing company from releasing the Knuckles selects (I think they're called), or at least cause a snag with the 3rd issue. We'll probably never know the exact truth unless there's some official word, but I think some of the speculation isn't all that farfetched. In other news, I have heard that the Sonic Universe arc after the Chaotix is going to be a Sonic Underground arc. Not only that, it is intended to give closure to the show. Thoughts? I myself have never seen Sonic Underground, so I guess it's nice to know people will get an end to the series.

Now I realise that point 2 is pretty much a repeat of the first, but it was such a big point, it was worth making twice. So instead of giving someone else their own arc, letting someone ELSE have a chance(Especially since Silver seemed to have gotten two arcs apparently?), their going to give closure to a show that not many people really care for anymore? To cut it short; -Sonic Underground's conclusion has been replaced by a Shard vs Metal Sonic beatdown in SU#50. The Underground story is merely postponed, not cancelled. Spoiler: click to toggle -SU#46 and 47 originally had Rob and Mari-An planned to be in the stories, but instead Bow and Thorn appeared. It's pretty clear that they were last-minute swap-ins. According to the in-comic explanation, Rob and Mari-An are on the run with their son from Eggman's forces. Spoiler: click to toggle -StH#244...Every Echidnas has been warped by Thrash bar Knuckles and Finitevus. It's not known where to yet. It's obvious this was in some part due to external circumstances. Looks like the comic is taking quite a heavy toll from outside interference.

Although I think they could do without the transforming Dingo all the same.

They want to advance the story and keep it going, but there doesn't seem to be a real need to give closer to a story not many care for, not to mention when it has nothing to do with either the main or side story lines.
