The Female Ultimate Life Form!

I was browsing through various things Sonic when I stumbled upon the all too familiar Tiara Boobowski from the cancelled game Sonic X-treme. Eventually I got to thinking, what if Sonic X-treme was released after all? Sure, Sonic has had his fair share of cancelled games, but the concepts, material and rumors that buzz around Sonic X-treme are certainly enough to make it a candidate for a "what if" topic. In a nutshell, Sonic X-treme had about 8 different plots for Sonic's reasons for going on this new adventure being decided on (some even connecting SatAM with the games). Tiara Boobowski (and her father) were completely new characters that were planned for this game, perhaps with Tiara even being Sonic's love interest. Along with the new characters, we would see old faces; Nack/Fang, Metal Sonic, Knuckles, Tails, and perhaps even Amy. Sonic himself would have a bunch of new moves and abilities -- and each friend had their own playstyle. This game was going to be a step in Sonic's move to 3D. Then, after repeated problems, the game was cancelled. I'm sure most of us have read or know little bits of information about X-treme, so what do you think the Sonic Universe/games would have been like if this game was released? Do you think the series would be sort of the same, but just a couple new faces, or completely different? |

I object to your claims

I'd imagine Sonic would have at least some of the moves from the game. |

I'm just going to spitball this now, and I know that some people will most likely disagree with me, but I think the series wouldn't be too different. We obviously know the second version of Sonic 3D Blast wouldn't have become possible. From what I believe the modern look may have been similar to what it is now and still would have been used being that Sonic Team wasn't responsible for X-treme. That being said, it may be possible Sonic X-treme would have made the Sega Saturn a lot more popular and thus I guess it's accurate to say that Sonic Adventure would've become a Saturn title. This game also could've been responsible for porting titles over from Japan like Hyper Duel, Sheinryu and G-Vector, maybe even Castlevania: Symphony of the Night due to a better popularity. Not to mention, a possible popularity boost would've given the opportunity for Sega to make more titles that could've been done like Virtua Hamster plus more originals. All in all, it probably could have made a delay on the Sega Dreamcast's release at least until 2001. |

This seems likely, as in a video I've seen, don't know whether it was a trailer or one of the videos that play when you sit on the title screen long enough, but it was where Tails' plane transformed, Sonic had the model he had from the Saturn 3DB Special Stage, as well as from Sonic R. I forget about Tails though. Another point you bring up is the Dreamcast being released later, 2001 would mean that the PS2 would already be out, so the system would probably fail pretty quickly and land us where we are now. |

Maybe not. A several year delay could have given Sega the opportunity to do things unimaginable to the Dreamcast such as an internal hard drive similar to the Xbox as well as possible DVD playback support. Although, the Dreamcast did have a few arcade titles on it that may not have been possible for the Saturn so its tough to say if these would've immediately failed if released after 1998. |

Hydrocity Act 2

Personally I think it would have completely changed a lot of things, as hard as that might be to believe, it would have had a completely different tone to it then Sonic Adventure, alas, even Yuji Naka himself I believe stated that he heard things weren't going right in the development, so maybe it's best we went the direction we went in. |

Personally, I'm glad X-treme was cancelled. Sorry, but with this whole Sonic's love interest, the fish eye lesnse ect. Would've looked like it would take the series in a direction that wouldn't be good. Plus, it looked like it would be a pain to control, as SomecallmeJohnny stated in his SA review. |

Sonic X-treme is possibly the most "What if" worthy thing in the Sonic franchise. I view it as the great turning point. It was, ultimately, the moment of failure for the Classic Sonic style, and allowed for the dawn of the Adventure era due to the need for something new. 'If' it had come out though, I honestly suspect that the entire franchise would look different than it does today. Assuming it would have done well (Because I think it would have, based on what I know about it), it would have forged a powerful run for the Classic Sonic style, and we would have never seen a change to the Adventure/Modern style. We'd have had a pattern a bit more similar to the 3-D Mario games, what with the plot never becoming anything worth note, and the gameplay eventually feeling recycled but fun. Simply put, Sonic would have been very different, because no change would have been necessary. It'd have been a worthy transition into the 3-D era, and it would have restored the slowly-fading peak that the franchise reached after S3&K. Would this have been a good thing? Perhaps. I love the Adventure games, and I honestly prefer the entire 3-D era to the 2-D era, so I can't say I would have been as big a fan as I am. But, the franchise would have stayed strong a bit more consistently, and for those who prefer the more Classic Sonic style it would have been brilliant. As it stands, we've got a franchise with a lot of potential, but a history of rather fragile success. If X-treme had come out, the franchise would have been strong like Mario, but I think it would lack most of the potential that it has as it stands. |

I think that the gameplay of the franchise would be pretty much now the same if X-Treme had come out, but storylines would be incredibly different. It would have more of that 'classic' feeling. Shadow, for example, would probably never have existed - or if he had, he would be a totally different style. As far as storyline goes I'm glad that X-Treme didn't make it since I love the detailed plots of the Adventure games and Sonic Battle. However, I think that X-Treme would have had pretty epic gameplay, so there is that. I dunno. I agree with Yami's point about it being more consistently strong, at least in the fanbase's eyes. A lot of people didn't like Adventure because it didn't feel classic; X-Treme would still have had the classic feeling. A lot of people joined the Sonic fandom because of Adventure, though. So the fanbase itself would be completely different. |

I think a Sonic/NiGHTS crossover would have been made more likely. After all, both NiGHTS Into Dreams and Xtreme were going to use the same engine... |
