Sandopolis Act 1
In 1949, Communist forces in China drove the nationalist Kuomintang army out of mainland China and into the island of Taiwan. Since then, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has established itself as the ruler of China.

Taiwan, however, persists as an exile state. Although the CCP have made it their constitutional duty to reclaim this island (Citation: see paragraph 3), the Taiwnese have maintained their practical (unofficial) independence mainly because the United States has promised military retaliation should China offer unprovoked aggression[.

In the coming decades, however, it seems likely that the credibility of that threat will lose ground as China enjoys what will likely continue to be "the world's biggest military expansion."

The current Chinese leadership is for the most part a cautious, relatively pro-western faction; their policy has been to continue what's been termed "China's peaceful rise." This "peaceful path" emphasizes the need for peaceful relations between China and the west while the CCP focuses on domestic development.

This has included, for the most part, leaving Taiwan alone. Even so, it is CCP policy that long-term "reunification of the motherland" is non-negotiable. The United States is bound by treaty to defend Taiwan against military incursion.

So, where will Taiwan be in 38 years? Will it,

-continue as an exile state while China and the US forever posture
-enter voluntarily into the People's Republic of China
-declare and retain internationally recognized independence.
-be taken by the PRC after the US backs down
-become the flashpoint of a US-China conflict

or will something different altogether happen? What do you think?

Those who do good, do...
I never heard of taiwan, and I don't want to know what'll happen to it, seriously, what if the US decides to nuke it or something?

Read this quote. Read it very closely. Why on Earth would the US nuke a place they're supposed to defend? Seriously, it would violate the treaty and even if there was no treaty, nuking any place these days is just a recipe for disaster.

People with such little understanding of geopolitics...or basic reading skills, should not really be commenting on a situation they don't understand(Pardon for the snobby sounding comment).

Well, so long as China exists as it is, I doubt the US will willingly back from Taiwan, as it has been the US'es desire since it reached the Pacific to be master of it. To allow any other nation to have control over it that is neither US nor Western(or US friendly) is unacceptable to our governments goals. Hence why we've occupied Hawaii and the Philippines. We wanted a slice of the Asian pie like the other western powers, and likly why even if Pearl Harbor didn't happen, war between us and Japan would of been inevitable(As well as if Japan was not the warmonger and maybe someone else was in the pacific). Taiwan also stands against communist China, which was our bitter rival with us and friendly to the Soviets, both of whos influences we did not want spreading. Even now, the idea of China as a super power over the US is unwanted.

However, should the US be forced to withdraw and be completely unable to back its claims, since now economic problems are hitting us and the Europeans hard, the chances of China wanting to unify their land with Taiwan will seem likely.

Of course, there is the possibility of Taiwan wanting to peacefully unite with the motherland, but considering the current government and majority mindset, I doubt that will happen.

EDIT

It has come to my attention this is going on.

For once I hope China can keep their military under check. Soldiers follow their generals, and if the article claims is true, than we can expect a invasion of Taiwan if they take power.
