Yep.

Okay, don't shout at me for this, i'm just having my opinion, if i can. ^^; Mario is the best claimed platform game, and i definitely support that. It's entertaining, kid friendly, but well, in the recent times.. Mario games are still fun, don't get me wrong. But anyone else thinks they are getting way too repetitive? We have got a Super Mario Galaxy 2, over 2 New Super Mario Bros games, a new Mario Kart, new Mario Party, a new Mario Tennis game, a new Paper Mario game, a new WarioWare game..new stuff are added to each game, but still, the gameplay, it just got boring for me. Those new stuff are just only small powerups or just minor changes that make the game different for more then 15 minutes and nothing more. And well, the story. Super Mario Galaxy 2, princess is kidnapped, Bowser finds a power source that makes him conquer the galaxy again. Super Mario 3D Land, the princess is kidnapped and Mario has to rescue her. New Super Mario Bros 2, the princess is kidnapped and Mario has to rescue her. Paper Mario Sticker Star, Bowser scatters appearing-out-of-nowhere stickers and Mario has to rescue them. New Super Mario Bros U, well, a story hasn't been revealed but if anything, i'm just going to assume it has the princess kidnapped and Mario needing to rescue her. It's just, kind of that. Most of the games i mentioned has the princess kidnapped. That's what happens with every game, however something else happened other then the princess being kidnapped. For example, the pretty neat feature of visiting the entire galaxy in Super Mario Galaxy. All 3 of the Paper Marios had some amazing and entertaining gimmick (Sticker Star, by the way, gotta say it has a good one, with collectible stickers that grant you abilities and whatnot, i like that.), the Mario & Luigis too. Now, it just has kind of..like mentioned, a powerup like mentioned. And that's the only thing that's adding to the story. Have i really want to mention how the intro goes in New Super Mario Bros 2. Mario & Luigi fly around collecting coins. The koopa kids appear, with the kidnapped princess, fly off, Mario & Luigi chases, that's it. Around 40 seconds of an intro, it's like the game just wants to get the thing over with. The music also feels WAY too cheerful since 2011. As in, more cheerful then ever. Both of the Galaxy games had some amazing orchestra, the DS games also granted some very memorable soundtrack. Now it's just kind of..eh..it feels like just general music, it's not memorable, or it's reused from older games, kind of like New Super Mario Bros U & 2 used the New Super Mario Bros Wii main menu theme, remixed it and put it as the background music for the E3 trailer. The game is for all audiences but all of the sudden, it makes me feel as it's just for 5-to-10 year old kids, and Nintendo makes me feel as if because it's a Mario game, everyone will buy it so they make them. Take a look at the difference between Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends. Just like Mario, who doesn't love Rayman? It's wacky, humorous, action packed and intense. Rayman Origins was made in 2011, and made Rayman have a huge comeback. It had beautiful 2D graphics, Very smooth and completely new gameplay, and was a platformer that entertained me to no end. Rayman Legends will be an upcoming game for the Wii U. It has the very same controls and look as Rayman Origins did. But check this out. The game suddenly is more shaded, has a completely different setting, will have the ability to play online, tons of mini games, a new character to play with that has new abilities, enabled with the touch screen that Wii U has, and while the gameplay is similar to Origins, all of those things make it a completely different game. Now let's look at the differences between New Super Mario Bros and New Super Mario Bros 2. New Super Mario Bros was a great idea to return Mario to his older times, with the abilities of the DS touch screen and the nice mix of 2D and 3D graphics, making it a 2.5D game. It had nice gameplay, some exploration to collect all of the star coins and tons of levels to keep you entertained. New Super Mario Bros 2. Same concept. Mario in 2.5D levels that resemble the classics, with an addition of the 3D glasses-like screen, great sound quality, and new powerups. Well um..I'd rather just buy the two Rayman games and play them in order, really. I'm sure the second NSMB has entertaining levels too, Nintendo knows how to make each stage different, however after you played the New Super Mario Bros and the second game of it's series, New Super Mario Bros Wii, would you not be bored of a third game that has a similar concept to it? To make each game entertaining, you must make large differences, however not such that everyone will dislike. Creativity. That is probably all i have to say, i tired myself out. I just wanted to speak my thoughts out. Overall if you decided to go Tl;DR, Mario is starting to get boring in my opinion, way too repetetive, way too cheery, more then ever, all that. So yeah, i will await replies, if there hopefully will be any. ^^; |

HOW COULD YOU SAY THIS, MAX? MARIO BEING-nah, I'm joking. I really do think that Mario is getting boring. After the Gamecube, I slowly started to not like Mario. It gets repetitive and everything is the same. The last Mario game I adored was Super Mario Sunshine. After that, it was Super Smash Bros. Brawl that I liked and that is just random Nintendo and some other characters. The bottom line is, you're right, Mario is getting boring. Pretty much the reason why I stopped playing. |

I agree that Mario is getting kind of repetitive but that's why people like it, because it never really changes. For example look at similar series like Legend of Zelda or Pokémon. Both of those franchises have repetitive game play and storyline with every new game adding only a few new power-ups or Pokémon. But they sell millions of copies everywhere despite this fact. So you see, sometimes it's the familiarity of a franchise that keeps people coming back for more. However I do respect your opinions and I do somewhat agree with what you're saying. Just trying to make a point. ^^' |

Yeah, everything's the same. If a new game is going to be made, IT HAS TO BE A NEW GAME. |

So.... a rant topic? Okay... Mario's fine for me. At least the 3D ones. They have a good amount of change. I haven't read too much into the New Super Mario Bros. games coming up. I only really liked the Wii one because co-op was a good time, so I'm not sure. I'll probably at least grab the Wii U entry though, that looks interesting. The previews of the 3DS one makes it look more interesting, but I'm just not sure if I'll grab that right away, will probably wait on it. Also, who plays Mario for the story? I could care less about the story in most platformers nowadays. |

To be perfectly honest, as an individual I am completely indifferent towards the Mario series. I don't love it, I don't hate it, I just... Honestly couldn't give a shit about it. I find the concept, the characters, and the gameplay all pretty boring. As Max said, nine times out of ten the point of the game is to "rescue the princess". However, there is an exception. There is one Mario game I genuinely loved playing, and that's Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga. I have yet to play Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story, but I love the concept of the Mario and Luigi RPG games. Super star Saga had a unique gameplay formula that set it apart not only from other Mario games but from other RPG games. The characters are funny and endearing, and some just plain badass. (Prince Peasley and Fawful, anyone? ) The point of the game was "save the world" instead of "save the princess". It was just an awesome and fun game. If the main Mario games were more like that, I think I would start to have feelings for the series, but still, Mario's whole thing was setting the standards for platforming games everywhere, and I suppose he did succeed in doing that, but now the formula has gotten old, and it just feels like he doesn't have much to offer anymore. |

I never understand why Nintendo franchised are picked up on this while games like Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed and Mass Effect all do the same thing, They may add small new elements to the game but they basically play the same as the last game in the series, heck even Sonic is slipping down that way now (Unleashed day level, Colours and Generations all played the same for me) |

Yeah screw all of those games too. I just don't pay attention to any of them. Tho' to be fair, Pokemon does pretty much the same thing. ![]() Which is why I really like spinoff games. They offer something different. |

This so much, and why rant topics tend to annoy me. I think most franchises are like this when it comes to their own gameplay. It's just Mario's story stays roughly the same, which there's nothing necessarily wrong with that. To me anyway. Like I said, I never play platformers for story nowadays. I have RPGs for that. |

The mainline Pokemon titles since Gold/Silver/Crystal have all had something new. Not just the monsters themselves but new specs of gameplay in each. The Super Mario series, among most Nintendo franchises are the only games I can find playable compared to most other games of this generation because of their imaginative worlds they bring to us. I'm not sure why people think the series is slipping because it's kind of far from it. |

The thing is Nintendo is being way too "safe." They know they have a devoted fanbase that is quite favoring to keeping things the same(So much so that ANY change to gameplay, like Sunshines, is treated like a black sheep). Sunshine was really the most original in my opinion based mostly on the setting and change in game-play. New Super Mario Bros U and 2 are coming out for Wii U and 3ds(Respectively), and neither even try to show off the graphical and gimmick parts of the games. Its purely for the nostalgia...uh...I cant think of a better, nicer word for it. But than again, at least the Koopalings get featured again...I just wish it was a more original game and not just better graphics Super Mario 1 and 3(Why not something like 2? I would LOVE to play as Peach again and have her be more useful). Miyamoto is too much of a minimalist. |

When you have a game series (such as Assassin's Creed), it's hard to change the story completely without losing the overall story of the series itself. Although, I'd like to point out that AC3 seems different. I'm looking forward to seeingvthe possible changes. Edited by [Mika] Gumi, Jul 31 2012, 05:16 AM.

To be honest, I don't really know if Mario is capable of 'losing it'. xD He has a unique edge in the gaming industry for some reason that I never really understood, and with the way Nintendo keeps to his basic 'pattern' so dedicatedly I can't really see the franchise slipping in popularity. xD Now, I was never really a fan of the sidescrolling Mario games; the only ones I ever really enjoyed somewhat are Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World. But, I do love the 3D games. Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 are all really fun, I've found. I'm sure I would enjoy Sunshine too, were I to get a real chance to play it. I'd love to (eventually) get the 3DS game, as well. As for the story... I never had any expectations for a real plot in a Mario game, so I can't say I've ever been disappointed with the plots we've been given. To put it simply, Mario doesn't change much, and this somehow works in his favour. Like how Colours and Generations seem to have done so well, for having a gameplay like the Unleashed day stages. See, to put this in perspective, I enjoyed the Unleashed day stages quite a bit, as well as Colours and Generations. Part of why I love the similar gameplay is because my favourite of the three, Colours, is so short! I like the others because they're reminiscent of the pattern of gameplay in Colours, and almost feel like an extension of that same experience. If Sega were to actually make a long Sonic game with the Colours/Unleashed-day-stage/Generations gameplay format, that would probably be the best thing they've ever done in a long time. Because the gameplay is really, really fun. Changing the gameplay formula for a series isn't a bad thing, in fact it can be a really good thing; however, if you have something that actually works, changing it too much is likely to be harmful rather than beneficial. If one wants to experiment, side games are the place to go. Sonic Chronices: The Dark Brotherhood is a good example of this. Edited by YamiShadow, Jul 31 2012, 11:58 AM.

This. This so much. It's like Nintendo isn't even trying to make it remotely refreshing, nope. Just the same old concept over and over again; same music, same enemies, same bosses. The princess gets kidnapped, Mario saves her, end of story. It's true that the story shouldn't matter much but it becomes tedious after awhile. I get that they want to give the player the nostalgic feeling, but doing that 3 games in a row is a bit too much. To be frank, I'm done with Mario. It used to be fun, but now it's not even worth getting his newer games because nothing exciting or fun happens in it. It's sad really, Mario used to be one of my favorite franchises. It's just getting so milked. Although I don't mind games like Mario Sunshine or Galaxy, because they are refreshing. |
