We are still watching
You have a homicidal AI that threatens you by video-mail every so often and plans to either burn Earth with a laser, infect it with a virus that makes bird flu seem like mono or crash the Internet by uploading her consciousness. On top of that, she's running a bunch of cyborgs, mutants and robots. Plus that voice:

That is scary. Necromorphs jumping out of vents at you is not. When I was playing this game at about 13 or 14, I would have dreams of being in Citadel Station with nothing but a leadpipe, or I'd think I was in cyberspace and SHODAN's presence would start filling my vision with pixels until her face filled it. System Shock is a lot damn more scary than Dead Space, ten fold.

Damn, I'd get nightmares from that. But I have no fear in animated figures. But still, Deadspace is nothing compared to System Shock or Doom. I still can't remember that PSOne game I have had that scared the crap out of me before...

I agree with Fen, it's a game that is supposed to make you jump. Not really scare you. I bet Slender is called "scary" because it's a game that makes you jump. A game is only SCARY when you start to have nightmares about it and can't stop thinking about it.
Wait, doesn't that mean you agree with me? Don't get me wrong, but I thought previously that:

Thriller = makes you jump

Horror = scares you

Break out the L-word. The other L-word.
I agree that Amnesia: The Dark Descent, the System Shock series, the Silent Hill series, the FEAR series (the first two mainly, from what I've seen of the third, it looks pretty awful) and to a lesser extent, the Penumbra series are pretty damn scary. Also, have any of you heard of a Half Life mod called Afraid of Monsters? That shit is really scary.

Also, Minecraft. It's scary when you start playing it for the first time. But I got used to it.

Oh, and Slender. Any of you heard of it? It's a Slenderman video game. That's all you need to know. Terrifying shit.

Anyways, back to the topic at hand: I've not played Dead Space, but it seems like it's mostly cheap jump scares. That's what most horror games/movies boil down to nowadays. Jump scares that are easy to become accustomed to and expect.

Yeah, Slender is just creepy. It's scary because you are always expecting something and you slowly lose awareness every second, and then, BOOM. FEAR is another pretty good game that scares me.

I will give Dead Space this: it was very atmosphere-ic. The soundtrack of tings, crashes and bumps did make for a tense game. Scary? No. But it kept you on your toes for the sake of sometimes you don't know when things will come out at you. And it was enjoyable, so much that I got the platinum trophy for it on PS3.

I think some people have a problem with differentiating being truly scared or just startled. Scared means you can't sleep at night because something disturbed you that much. Startled is some guy jumping out of an alley going BLARG and you jump a little. You don't rock back and forth in the fetal position because you can't go past alleyways again, you just move on.

dead space being too scary on single player is a load of bull*beep!*, besides, I've seen one of the endings and it scared my sister, but not me, also why would it be scary if it was unique?

I couldn't even get a quarter through chapter 1. I did get a bit farther than I thought would have after beating the first couple to death without using the cutter. Boosted my courage, but not enough to go through the first area.
I have an interest in spriting. If anyone has a request, don't hesitate to ask.
