http://www.computerandvideogames.com/359045/ea-single-player-dead-space-games-were-too-scary/

As if the article title wasn't hilarious enough, just check out some of these quotes from the article:

Quote:

"We were hearing feedback that they love the thriller game, but it was pretty scary, and the obvious next step was that they wanted to play with someone. So we introduced co-op into the game," [EA Games marketing boss Laura Miele] said...

Quote:

"Personally, I would rather go to scary movie with my husband rather than sit at home with the lights out watching one on my own. We're looking for that to reach out to consumers that perhaps were not open to Dead Space 1 and 2."

>horror game
>too scary
>welcome to EA games

Thoughts?

Bullcrap, Deadspace can't be that scary. I've played 1 and 2. What makes me think that 3 is going to be scary? Really, what people are scared of is what's coming. Something can't be "Too Scary" unless if it was the original Resident Evil. Deadspace has never been "too scary" and critics are just being babies about it. Nothing seems to be scary about it at all. It's just like the other ones. You have to be AWARE of your surroundings.

But isn't the whole point of a horror game to be scary? It's like taking a platformer and saying "It has too much jumping so we decided to remove the platforms and just have you walk right".

That aside, Dead Space isn't all that scary in the first place. Though I hear the original was a little more creepy than the second. But basically it uses the odd cheap scare (and then a skeleton Xenomorph popped out) and you'd be a little more worried about being sent back to a checkpoint rather than actually being terrified. Yahtzee summed it up well once by saying that a horror game just isn't scary when you're armed to the teeth. And really, I can't think of many moments where you don't have something on you to chop these things up with.

Well hey, I'm sure my brothers will get a kick out of this anyway. *shrug*

This basically sums it.

While I'm the kind of guy that hides under the table at the first sight of horror, even I have to say that too scary seems like a really strange thing. Co-op is cool but I'm pretty sure its the same has having someone next to you watching you play.

You only get one chance to live. Most people live those lives without ever realizing it.
I've played Dead Space 2 (Okay albeit, the demo) and the only scary part is like, the first second you see something pop out of nowhere. And even then it's not really a scare, more or less your adrenaline raising a tad then dropping. And while I will admit that if I'm playing a horror game, much like Doom 3, I will run away from that damn thing until I find good cover. But saying a horror game is too scary... Well, Chaos said it right. |I

Although I'm not bashing the idea of co-op. I actually like it, but not for the reason it's in there. I want to play with a buddy, maybe my brother, so we can kick necromorph ass together. Not because I'm going to like, piss my pants in fear or something.

Deadspace uses "pop out of nowhere" something to scare people. Really, Deadspace is pretty much the same exact thing as Doom, except Doom wasn't supposed to be that scary. Just the fact that people see humans that are just morphed into what is known as in the game, A NECROMORPH, they think it's scary. Really, you just have to be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for something to jump at you. What annoyed me and somewhat go me worried in Deadspace 1 was the Regenerator properly known as The Hunter is what worried me. You can't kill it no matter what. You would have to obliterate it to at least run away from it. But overall, if a Deadspace game would have to be scary, it would be the first. Reason being, you don't know what's happening, you don't know where to go at first, and people die left and right.

Imagine that. A horror game being too scary. You don't see Amnesia's developers announcing this for their sequel(Which its atmosphere alone made you paranoid).

I saw this the other day. EA ceases to amaze me. (Played both Dead Space games by the way, it's more of a 'tries to make you jump' kinda game, but it's not all that scary to me.)

This is trolling.

Unless, they're actually serious. In that case, they haven't played any real horror games like Silent Hill, Alan Wake, or even one of the Saw video games. That's guessing that they haven't commented on these already.

Besides, isn't Dead Space supposed to be more of a thriller than a horror game anyway?

They're serious.

And nope, supposed to be a horror. Though I lean more towards a "third-person shooter" more then that.

I agree with Fen, it's a game that is supposed to make you jump. Not really scare you. I bet Slender is called "scary" because it's a game that makes you jump. A game is only SCARY when you start to have nightmares about it and can't stop thinking about it.

Why do they have to justify co-op anyway? How about "it's fun to play with other people, so we added co-op?"

It's just a pre-release hype tactic. No substance to it.

And I agree with you all--Dead Space isn't that scary. Once you learn that vents = bad news, all the surprises are over for you. Amnesia: Dark Descent is much scarier viscerally, and Silent Hill employs a much more deeply disturbing mythos/atmosphere.

Silent Hill, the first Manhunt, the first Resident Evil, and...oh my God, this one game for the Playstation One always scared me and I keep forgetting what it was. I wouldn't play it until three years after I got it because I couldn't stand going through the first level.

Games that can scare the crap literally out of you? I give you Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, System Shock, System Shock 2, Police Quest 4: Open Season and the classic DOOM series.

Now, -puts on a purple hat and props his cheek up by his hand- as you were saying about Dead Space being the scariest game?

Oh my God, System Shock is another scary game. DOOM arcade is another. Deadspace is just called "SCARY" because little kids play it and have nightmares. Deadspace is just being aware. You can't be scared in Deadspace. IMPOSSIBLE!!!
