Carnival Night Act 1
http://www.9news.com/video/9newsonline.aspx (Link is to a live feed, may not work later on, but at this present time it works and is where I'm finding most of the information)

There isn't a published story on this yet, as it only just happened an hour or two ago. What I've gathered is that a man in a gas mask, about 15 minutes into the film, let off a canister in the front of the theater, and then opened fire on those in attendance. The gunman prevented people from leaving easily via more gun shots.

The incident left 10 dead in the theater. Another 50 were sent to the hospital, and 4 died following arrival. The gunman's apartment building had to be evacuated due to more explosives and things in his apartment.

Many witnesses have been asked what happened, and more will likely develop by tomorrow, but some horrifying tidbits include a baby being shot among those injured, bloody bodies being carried out.... just a horrifying situation.

All I have to ask is... What is wrong with people this day and age..? :/

You do have a point there. If the world really was as violent and effed-up as we're making it out to be in these situations, then they wouldn't even be such a big deal to us. I think it's good that this kind of thing is a shock--it's a sign that these major crime rates really have taken a drop, and that's always a good thing.

The dude who did it was just a total nut tho'. He even rigged his own apartment so anyone trying to search it would get blown up.

One of the most problematic and troubling things is what will now happen. As is common with humans, we will remember this, the person who did it, and we will ensure it is recorded. In a way, making him famous, remembered. I saw the picture of him, and he was smiling. I think he knows well what he did, and that he will be legend.

Yes, we will revile him for what he did, despise him for what he did, but that's just it. We will remember him. In a way, that may just be what he wanted.

Those who do good, do...
guess that means the guy was fame hungry, not copying the joker, sure some people want to be famous (not naming who...) but this is taking it too far...

(not naming who...)
I'll name who: pretty much everybody. Everybody wants to be famous. Some people take it too far.

While I think that this is certainly a tragic event, it's not really any reason to be condemning the entire human race to the doom of depravity and evil. Like TWOS said, it's actually a very good thing that this has come as such a shock to the world, because if this kind of thing happened all the time, we'd be used to it and our reaction would be less severe. I'm not saying this isn't terrible, but the fact that we know just how terrible it is goes to show that major violent crime rates are actually decreasing, or at the very least stabilized at a relatively low point, compared to other times in history.

To elaborate on what Fwiss said: Compare this day and age to the middle ages. Compare it to colonial America. Compare it to wartime Europe. If anything, we've got the lowest crime rates in history, and that's made evident by how indignantly and sorrowfully we're reacting to this particular nefarious crime. See, nowadays when things like this happen, people recognize that it's wrong. Throughout history, there have been far worse events that have gone completely unnoticed, or even sometimes just unrecognized as evil.

Don't give the human race such a bad wrap: we're getting better, slowly but surely.

Now, moving on from that, I'd like to bring up the U.S. political reaction to this: more politicians are pushing for gun control regulations, and more vehemently. What are your thoughts on gun control regulations, and do you think more restrictive gun control laws could have prevented this, and why?

I'd remember this bloke but to be honest I don't even know his name.

To me he's just some nut who somehow got into a theater and shot up some people. Not saying I don't feel bad for the ruined families, but he just doesn't seem worth remembering to me.
