Hydrocity Act 2
|
The Prince of Amenti by Sean Gilbert Author's Notes This story is a prequel to the fan story arc Sonic + Jam. Sonic does not make an appearance in the prequel, but he is a main character in the main storyline. This story introduces the fan character Jam the Jellyfish and his home, the city of Amenti. The prologue tells the history of Amenti. Ceann is pronounced "Key-on". He is the legendary hero of amenti - a sea spirit who rescues the first king of Amenti. The story then shifts to present day. The main character of this new storyline, Jamie Collins, AKA "Jam" wins the Royal Lottery used to determine who will become a Crown Prince. Prologue Long long ago, in a lost place in the depths of the sea, a hero named Ceann had rescued a small creature named Asura. Ceann, a crafty sea spirit, pulled Asura out of the depths of a trench. Asura, a small jiggly animal with long stinging tentacles, had swam too far from home and had gotten lost. Ceann became an honorary member of Asura's tribe. Ceann taught the tribe all of the laws of the Ocean, but left unexpectedly one day to help some other sea animals. Asura and his family, now well educated in the laws of the Ocean, built a city far away from any danger. Here the family prospered and grew to an enormous size. One day, Asura was left in charge of the entire City. He became the first king of the city. However, because of his cruelness, he was soon assassinated by a secret group of family members. Because he was royalty, his body was preserved like a king's body should be. He was divided into four sections and sealed into canopic jelly jars. Finally, his heart was buried with the remainder of his body, outside the city. To prevent a cruel king like Asura from taking over, the Mayor of the City initiated a new system. The City would thenceforth be ruled by a group of Princes who would be chosen by lottery. In order to even be entered into the lottery, the candidate had to meet a few requirements. He had to be healthy, intelligent, and had to have good communication skills. One candidates would be chosen from every graduating class to be the representative of his or her generation in Jellyfish Society. The Princes would give speeches presenting their ideas and concerns, and debate with one another about how the city should be run. This made each prince a very influential member of Society. If he or she knew how to exploit this influence, they could become very wealthy. Some of the princes wrote their own laws to try to counteract the laws of the Ocean. Some used force. And some used other forms of seduction to try to sway the minds of society. Even so, the Laws of the Ocean had been written long ago, and it was impossible to change them. The humble Mayor of Amenti had one job. He was to record the happenings of the city and initiate all festivals, rituals, and holidays. He had to be impartial to the laws. However, if he felt something was going awry in the city, he could inform the citizens and they could decide among themselves what to do. Years went by and the city grew more and more marvelous. But it also became more populated. It became increasingly competitive to be successful in the city. And as more things got accomplished, it became increasingly difficult to find things that needed to be done. One year, Spring rolled around and it was time to add a new prince to the growing list. Jamie Collins sat in the Dormitory studying for his finals. He knew the material by heart at this point, but he had nothing better to do so he studied. "Hey Jam", said his roommate who had just entered the room. 'Jam' was Jamie's nickname in school. It was not necessarily a nice name as it referred to his flawed complexion.*** "Are you working on Physics or Calculus?" he asked. "Neither. I'm working on Latin. I have to be able to translate some of Virgil's passages into English for the final. I just can't understand this fancy romantic vernacular he uses." Jam replied. "Why bother? It's a dead language. Nobody here speaks latin! They can barely speak English!" He laughed. "I know, right!" Jam only pretended to share the sentiment. He actually enjoyed learning Latin. "Tonight's the big night!" Jam's roommate exclaimed, slamming closed his books and making him lose his place. "What's happening tonight? Is it some party?" Jam honestly had no clue what was going on tonight. He was out of the loop. "Uh DUH," Jam's roommate said sarcastically, "It's the Royal Lottery!" "Oh that!" Jam said. "I heard the lottery is rigged." "Well yeah. Don't tell anyone, but rumor is going around that Julius Alestar and his friends rigged it this year. The other Princes have all been praising him in their speeches. Normally, the odds of winning are 1 in a million. But he is acting like he's already won." He paused and then reminded Jam, "Don't tell anyone I told you. Julius has friends in high places." He walked out of the room. "Well I'm going down town to see the drawing!" Jam looked at his closed book. What page was I on? he thought. He looked outside. The streets were jam packed. They were ALWAYS jam packed. Today seemed worse than usual. He would not be going downtown today. There was no way he would be going downtown. He looked at his waterbed and decided to take a nap. DING DONG! his doorbell rang. Jam sleepily walked to his intercom. "Hello?" he said, holding down the button on the intercom. "Is a Mr. Jamie Collins here?" said the voice in the intercom. "This is Jamie," Jam said. "Can we have a word with you? It's urgent," said the voice. "I will be right down," said Jam. He looked in the mirror and picked some sea spinach from a gap where a tooth had once been. Then he marched down the stairs. I hope nobody's hurt! Jam said. On second thought, however, he had no friends and the city was his only family. What could it be? Opening the building door, Jam's heart stopped. In front of him stood Mayor Jelal and the mayor's bodyguards. "Can I help you Mr. Mayor?" "Mr. Collins!" Mayor Jelal said in his jolly voice before shifting to a more serious tone. "We would like to congratulate you on behalf of the City of Amenti." "Congratulate me for what?" asked Jam, still dumbfounded by the Mayor's presence. "For winning the Royal Lottery, of course! Haven't you been paying attention on TV or the radio? It's all over the internet!" Jam had not quite expected this. He did not know what to say. On one hand, it was one of the highest honors in all of Jellyfish City to be coronated, but on the other hand he was not sure he even wanted the job. What about my finals?! He thought. He decided to just go with it, "Oh the lottery! Yes, yes of course!" "Mr. Collins!" Mayor Jelal chortled. "You were sleeping, weren't you?" Jam laughed it off, even though he wasn't quite sure it was funny. "Yes, yes, very ironic," said Mayor Jelal. "Do I have to sign anything?" asked Jam. "No. Unfortunately, Mr. Collins, as a citizen, you are obligated to perform this duty without giving us your authorization. The drawing was tonight, but the actual coronation will be in Six Weeks. We have come tonight to inform you of your new Duties as well as to bring you this manual and a copy of the Laws of the Ocean. As I am only just the Mayor, this is the only service I can provide for you. But if you have any questions, you can contact one of the other princes." "I see" said Jam. Yes I'm sure the other princes would be ecstatic to help out the newbie. "We should be going now. We have to clean up from tonight's activities. There is a busy day tomorrow!" said the mayor. "It was nice to meet you, Mr. Collins." He held out his hand which Jam shook wearily. "Have a nice night." The Mayor and his bodyguards left. Wow, thought Jam, that was too much. What do I do now?! His body answered that question with a yawn. Right! Sleep now. I'll figure the rest out tomorrow. He went upstairs to his room. Epilogue Julius Alestar looked out over the city. How disappointing. He thought. All that money I spent rigging the lottery has gone to waste! I can't be too mad at this kid Jamie. After all, he is obligated to fulfill this position whether he likes it or not. But the rest of the crew probably won't like it… Julius was the most popular student in school. He had the support of all of his friends and even the Organizers of the lottery. The drawing, something similar to the Powerball lottery drawing, would draw up Seven balls with numbers on them. The lottery had been rigged such that each of his seven numbers would be drawn. And in fact, the first five numbers drawn WERE his. But the last two had been switched. Apparently, the mayor had found out about the drawing being rigged and he himself switched them. This new number, as luck would have it, was Jamie's. "Mr. Alestar..." came a deep voice from the darkness. "Marcus... I've been expecting you." Julius turned around. A dark figure stood in front of him. "We have to get rid of Mr. Collins before he is coronated," said the figure. "I agree Marcus." Marcus Cassius was a very influential member of Jellyfish Society. As the reigning General, he all but brainwashed the soldiers of Amenti. Julius would never dream of opposing him. The pair met on the roof of Jam's dormitory building. They went inside from up here, keeping to the shadows so as to not be seen or heard. * * * * * Inside the building, a party was taking place. Jam's roommate had come home with streamers, balloons, candy, and music. All of the Dormers were congregating on Jam's floor. Fortunately he had taken a nap earlier! Jam was excited, but he didn't know anyone. "SPEECH!!" shouted some of the partiers. They wanted Jam to share his feelings. "I don't know what to say!" shouted Jam back. Julius found some of his friends and whispered something to them. "QUIT YOUR JOB YOU LOSER!" shouted one of the jellyfish. Suddenly a scene had broken out and several of the jellyfish had run up towards Jam and hit him. Jam didn't know what happened. "Fight! Fight Fight!" Shouted the crowd. Jam stood up, only to get knocked back down. Whats going on? said Jam. He managed to get to his feet again, and this time punched back. But he missed, and hit none other than Julius himself. "Do you want to fight?!" Said Julius. It had now gotten personal. "No! I just want everyone to settle down." Jam said surrendering. Julius punched him. Hard. Jam flung across the room. "LOSER!!" Shouted some people in the crowd. Several of the Jellyfish tackled him. As Jam slipped out from under them, he looked for a way out of the room. Suddenly all of the jellyfish had become violent. The last thing he heard was his roommate whispering to someone else, "Jam is weak, 50 bucks says he doesn't make it a week." This was the last straw. Jam jumped out of the window and onto the escape stairs. He ran. And he cried. Now Marcus followed him, wanting to get rid of him in the midst of the chaos. Jam was too fast for Marcus. He turned down an alleyway and out of the city, losing Marcus to the dark depths of the Ocean. * * * * * Jam was alone. Not just alone in the depths of the Ocean. He was alone in his whole life. With popularstudents like Julius hungering for all of the attention, he would never succeed in life. Everytime he felt like he was starting to win, someone pushed him down. And they laughed all the while. Jam cried alone in the darkness until a giant beast started moving out of the corner of his eye. Teeth, he noticed. The beast snapped at him. No time to cry he thought. Gotta run away Jam ran and ran as the beast closed in on him. It snapped at him again, this time just missing his head. Fortunately, a swift current picked Jam up and swept him away. But where was it going? It was going too fast and Jam couldn't see. He bumped his head on something hard and passed out. * * * * * Waking up, Jam had no idea where he was. How long had he been drifting? He had no idea. He looked around. He could tell by the water pressure that he was deep. Deeper than he had ever been. A rock floor sat beneath him. It was harder than anything he had ever felt. Must be the water pressure, he thought. But then another thought crossed his mind. How will I get out of here?! He looked and there was only one way out. up, he thought. He swam, but the current above him kept pushing him back into the trench. Stuck! He thought. But almost miraculously, a small rusty coin floated straight into his hand. It looked like one of those old greek coins but he couldn't tell. It was too rusty. As he held onto it, though, a strong energy filled his body. Suddenly, he was propelled out of the trench at speeds faster than he had ever gone. What was that?! he thought. As he held on tighter to the coin, he began travelling even faster and faster. Ma..Ma ma... Magic co coin... The thought was too much for him to take. He swam and swam, higher and higher, faster and faster. He swam for hours. He dodged sharks and killer whales. He felt amazing. The thoughts of the previous night just washed away. And as he got closer to the surface of the water, he could see the sun rising. He sprang out of the water. He held the coin tight and the sea water began washing around him until he was drifting through the air, protected by a coat of water. Amazing He thought. In the sunlight, he could see that the coin had a cord on it, and he put it around his neck. He drifted to shore. To be continued in Sonic + Jam (Ceann - pronounced 'kyan' - irish - 'head') (Asur - hebrew - 'forbidden') ***Jelly is clear, and made from fruit juice. Jam contains bits and pieces of the fruit or sometimes even whole pieces of the fruits. Edited by TrueBlue, Jul 16 2012, 07:41 PM.
