The Black Swordsman
|
Rated: PG13 (Some violence and minor gory scene) Forest of Regret A small boy, probably no older than 7 or 8, stumbled aimlessly through the forest. He wore a pair of overalls that had definitely seen better days. He'd been lost for several days in this forest. It felt like a huge labyrinth with no escape. He stumbled, hungry and tired his limbs felt like noodles. He knew if he didn't do something soon he would surely die. He came to a clearing with a large black house. The windows had torn drapes and the paint on the walls was peeling. A crack of lightning flickered across the sky and soon after a torrential downpour began. The boy quickly ran across the muddy grass to the porch. He stared at the door before him for several seconds. It felt like it was... Calling to him... He stepped closer to the door and reached for the doorknob, his hands trembling all the while. The knob turned with the motion of his hand and he slipped inside. It was dark. After a few moments his eyes began to adjust to the dark and he could make out the faint forms of furniture and such in what seemed to be a hallway. He reached his hand to the left of the door trying to find a switch. He didn't think this place would probably have power but it couldn't hurt to try, he had thought. When he found the switch he flicked it and the lights immediately came on. All the furniture was covered in plastic. On the left of the hallway there was a door leading to what looked like a study. On the right was a door leading to the kitchen. There was a staircase leading up to the second floor. A door was at the top of the stairs. On either side of the balcony the halls continued onward. They were not lit up. It looked like there might be a switch up there. The boy crept forward, making the floor creak with every step. As he made his way up the stairs a feeling of coldness came upon him. He stepped onto the carpet at the top. Under his feet the ground was covered in thick ice. His breath was visible as a white wisp of air. He was shivering. The ice beneath him cracked and the floor gave way allowing him to fall. He couldn't see much. The light from the entrance shown from above which meant he was in the basement. He looked down at the ground. He was standing in some kind liquid. It was sticky and looked almost reddish in color. Something caught his eye from the corner of the room where a glint of some metal could be seen. He stepped through the liquid and came upon a rotting corpse. It's blood lay spilled around him. He took a step back. His eyes were filled with fear. He wanted to scream but no sounds would come. He turned around quickly, frantically searching the room for a way out. He saw more bodies that were scattered about. He knew he would be next. He heard the door upstairs creak open and a set of heavy boots could be heard as they made contact with the wood flooring. THUD, THUD! The being stepped forward, slowly. One step at a time. The boy withdrew into a corner and hid under one of the corpses. It smelled horrible but he hoped it would be enough to hide him. A door slammed open above and light filtered into the basement. A stairwell along the wall could be seen. A rather large shadow appeared on the wall. But what came next the boy could not imagine to be true. The clothes were that of a farmer. But under those clothes was nothing. No body at all. In it's hand was a butcher knife. A leathery glove held it firmly. "You can't hide from me. I know you are down here," came a voice from where the head should be on the being. It was a voice of malice and pain and death. It made the boys stomach drop almost causing him to vomit. "What the hell is this?!" the boy thought. The creature slowly made it's way over to the boy's location as if sensing him through some dark power. "Hiding under a corpse? How silly of you. Let's get you fixed up... Shall... We!?" His knife came crashing down on the corpse and blood spattered the wall. The boy rolled aside barely dodging the blade. The blade embedded itself into the floor and while the creature pulled and pulled the boy ran up the stairs and away from that dark place. He bolted out the door, not even turning to close it. He just ran and ran and ran. To this day no one knows what ever became of that boy. Some say the creature got him, others believe he escaped and never spoke of it again, and others still believe he runs through the forest, still trying to find his way home. This is the first in several short stories that I will be writing. Just things and ideas that come to mind and I feel like sharing and whatnot. Hope you all enjoy.
